I wanna see this movie

Very much looking forward to see this movie. Don Cheadle is a great actor and I am sure he will do our man Miles Davis justice.

Miles is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I've leant about him as a kid in the eighties when my dad used to play his eighties albums like You're Under Arrest, Tutu and Amandla. I've had the pleasure of seeing the man perform live twice, he was fantastic and the epitomacy of 'cool'.

Last time I saw him play was just 3 months before his death, and he was still the 'Master of Cool'. His band was already playing for like 10 minutes or so and when he came up he slowly strolled to the midst of the stage, trumpet in his hand, big sunglasses on, not paying any attention to the crowd. When he reached his spot at the center of the stage he just turned his head to the crowd while lifting his trumpet up, as a means to greet the crowd. And the venue just exploded with what I believe to be the most excitedly cheering crowd I have ever seen at any concert! And that was before he had actually played a note of music!!!

Later I went back in time and discovered a lot more great Miles Davis records. People can say what they want about his 70's period but I love this experimental electronic phase and the deep deep sounds that came from it. I also admire his older work, and I just love that Miles was always trying new things, that is the sign of a truely great artist.

I have also read his autobiography and it's a very interesting book. Anyway, I am excited about the movie and I hope it will be a great success!

Re: Miles - Sounds like an a**hole. I must confess, though, I tend to psychologically separate off my favourite musicians' art from what they were like in their real lives - for the entirely self-interested reason that, having dug into a few biographies, I get the gist that a lot of them were dicks....but still I want to be able to keep listening to their music!

The flip side of that is that I do hate it when people venerate musicians and put them on a pedestal, as though they were these amazing people who had all the answers, like prophets or something. Already, from the trailer of this one, it does kinda seem like they might do that with Miles here - treating him as the guy who really knows what it's all about, unlike these trifling journalists and label schmucks who we'll see him in contrast with. I hope it's not like that, because I think it would be more interesting to just let us get to know him as a cranky old guy who's smart on some things and not so hip on others, and who's capable of being extremely unpleasant, rather than nobly 'standing up for his rights as an artist' or something; but who also has a phenomenal musical legacy behind him.

She and my uncle had a bunch of great stories. She was a bebop purist so she didn't care for Miles's style of jazz fusion either.

John freakin' Coltrane used to have an actual church on Divisadero Street in San Francisco called "The Church of SAINT John Coltrane." Murals of St. John were painted on the walls and people from all over the world, especially Europeans, used to come to listen to the jazz jams that used to take place for hours on a Sunday. Unfortunately, the church didn't buy the property when it could have and was forced to close when rents were hiked up in the hood. I think it might still be around but not in the musical force like in the 90s, when you could hear the jams from blocks away... I was always bemused by the Saint thing...

Popularity is popularity, and if you think Miles music is as well known as Michael Jackson or the Beatles, and that his albums sold as much, and that he has many Top 10 singles, then go ahead.

You made some valid points. It's too bad there are those here with a hidden agenda that try to ruin it for others. They get banned and then they go into the prince.org site discussion forum and complain about things as if they own the site. They act like they are the race experts too. Some of them even start threads defending Bill Cosby - just because he is black. But their true colors come out from time to time and we can see they are just full of hate. I just watched the Trailer on Youtube and it looks Funny & Gangsta..The flick premiered in Cincinnati over the weekend...It's gonna be interesting to see how Film Critics judge Cheadle's Directing....Director/Actor/Producer , several hats that could garner Don a couple of Oscar Nods.
