Yeah he killed it! I didn't expect any less honestly.

Yes, that was great... Especially the part at the end with the close-up and the slightly jumping frame was intense.

It took me a minute, but once I checked him out, I realized he's an instant legend. He crowned himself last night.

Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I love that the reason he gave for Prince not making it on TPAB is because they talked too long in the studio and didn't have time to record. I hope it's true.

Additional thoughts the day after...

Really stoked Alabama Shakes won four doorstops (they got Best Engineered Album as well as the three that have been listed most places). They're doing music that doesn't sound like everyone else, they've gotten MUCH better since their first album and they're incredible live. They will deservedly get some new fans/attention from all this.

One more thing, with the whole art is subjective thing in mind....

Lady Gaga is so damn fake. This is not a new opinion from me, I haven't understood her appeal from the jump. She is and always has been a performance artist. Sometimes performance art works, most of the time it doesn't. But for me, to my eyes and ears, all her tribute to Bowie did was show how effortlessly brilliant and untouchably cool he was, and how hard she has to try to be whatever she is trying to be at the moment. Needless to say, I wasn't as impressed as some other people seem to be by tonight's performance.

Her tribute, IMO was not good. It was a sloppy mess, especially comapred to the one they did for BB King, which was much more tasteful. Why has she transformed into Bette Midler? I swear I thoought it was a tribute to her. eek lol

lol Yes. A Bette Midler impersonator lounge act trying to sound like David Bowie. Why did she do that? She didn't sing in her own voice until the last 30 seconds or so. It's just fakery of the highest order. At least when she was fake for the Sound of Music tribute she actually sang well.

Natalie Cole's Family Blasts Grammys For 'Disrespectful' Tribute

"She deserves more than [to be a part of] a minute-and-a-half tribute."

-

Natalie Cole's family was not happy about the "forgettable" homage paid to the late singer.

"Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister," Cole's sisters Timolin and Casey told Entertainment Tonight after the show.

-

Cole's image was included in an "In Memoriam" video for artists who have died recently.

-

"Here is a woman who has been in the business for four decades, had 21 Grammy nominations and won nine Grammys. She deserves more than [to be a part of] a minute-and-a-half tribute," her son, Robert Adam Yancy, added. "It was shameless the way they minimized her legacy. We will find solace in her legacy as well as her endless fans around the world."

The jazz singer died in January due to complications from ongoing health issues at the age of 65. She battled drug issues and hepatitis, which led to her receiving a kidney transplant in 2009.

Musicians like David Bowie and the Eagles' Glenn Frey were remembered with musical tributes Monday night.

Ornette Coleman was on and off the screen in the amount of time it took to read his name. One of the giants of 20th century music. Not that I expect a Grammy audience to listen to five minutes of Ornette in between Bieber and Pitbill performances... though it'd be nice.

But Lemmy from Motorhead wasn't really Grammy fare either, and he got a musical tribute. Maybe the problem is that no superstars offered to sing Natalie Cole songs on the show.

I agree! Just read Natalie's book. She was WAY more than a jazz singer. That is the least of what she was. She did everything! It's like she doesn't even exist the way her memory is ignored now.

I don't know. I just know that it's impossible to please everyone in these things. Especially when you had so many artists passing within the last year. Someone's family or fans seems to ALWAYS feel slighted in some way. -

-

However, I doubt that they would've had a problem rounding us some singers that were influenced by Ms. Cole or at least appreciated her contributions to music. Too many talented superstars in the house for that. IMHO

-

I just know that I'm glad it wasn't my job. I guess we can ask Ken Ehrlich about that one.

The Grammys can't make a tribute to avery single artist/musiciam who dies. It's not possible. Justin Bieber's performance was good, i mean Love Yoruself but the Where Are u Now performance is the worst thing i have seen in the Grammys. Kendrick Lamar performance was absolutely amazing. It's so intense, but this is not his fir Grammy performance right? and the first as far as i can remember was at the same level.

Thats why i mentioned it, the Grammy show likes to do these things, link the times, but as I said, just because you idolize someone or represent a style that he dug or may have dug (for the record i never heard Bowie even speak of Lady Gaga) but these tributes often fail because of this kind of thinking.

Look at the tributes getting high marks, BBKING, and The Glenn Frey tribute, hmmm wonder why.

And Bowie's family is far from pleased. The reason the Glenn's worked is because Don and the band would not perform with anyone but Jackson Browne.

Bowie sold 140 million records.

The Eagles alone sold 150 million records.

Natalie sold 30 million records.

No offense, but when it comes to popularity and impact she's not anywhere near the same league as a Frey or Bowie.

Random thoughts.....

The Bowie tribute was okay but I thought it went on too long. It was a mistake trying to physically embody Bowie because it's not possible nor is it necessary to perform a tribute. A lot of artists make that mistake.

I don't get Miguel's performance. MJ was supremely gifted and certainly legendary but they could have used that space to do something for Natalie, damn.

Of course I'm thrilled for Bruno 'cuz I love that kid. Like I always say, he's got pepper. cool

Thrilled for Alabama Shakes too. Outstanding group.

Kendrick Lamar shut it down and I ain't even a hip hopper.

Stevie had to rescue the Maurice White tribute? Smh.

The Lionel Richie thing didn't move me either.

Poor Adele had a bad night.

The BB Kang tribute was good.

Pitbull? Seriously? eek

Easily performance of the night. Interesting how those idiots up in arms over Beyonce aren't claiming this much more explicit performance to be a racist attack on white people? Guess it was that good, huh? Gotta give TPAB a new listen; maybe the album I'll warm up to the album upon hearing it again.

BTW, I was in and out of Gaga's performance but thumbs seem to mostly in the middle, leaning down. What I paid attention to wasn't bad I say but it felt more like she was being herself rather than paying tribute to Bowie. I've never really listened to Bowie to know who he was as an artist or a person but this is how I felt.

Overall, this Grammys was yet another Taylor Swift show. They couldn't keep the camera off her for one minute throughout the whole show and it was pretty annoying (as always). Kendrick may have netted the most awards last night but Taylor (unsurprisingly) was the focus. I'd like to see someone try to argue she had performance of the night.

Outside of Kendrick, the B.B. King tribute, Alabama Shakes and to a lesser extent the Glenn Frey tribute, almost all of last night's performances were pretty weak. Taylor's was paint-by-numbers mediocrity, The Weeknd's was just one step above high school talent show level (the dude hardly moved and he's supposed to be today's Michael Jackson?), Lionel's tribute was patchy but a decent nostalgia trip (didn't know Demi could blow like that), Bieber's performance was embarrassing as was the "tribute" to Maurice White, Adele's performance would have been unimpressive and dull without the audio issues, Miguel's random cover of "She's Out of My Life" was good vocally but too short to be any better than a decent performance , unnecessary and felt like a commercial in the middle of the show, Gaga's tribute to Bowie was fine from what I've seen. Am I missing any? One thing that was made perfectly clear to me last night was how these old school acts even in their old age can perform circles around most of today's talent. Also, the only person who doesn't use special effects as a crutch is Kendrick who's performance was only enhanced by the imagery presented. On the other end of the spectrum you have The Weeknd, who's only performance highlight was when the lights shined brighter during the chorus and Bieber, who looked like a 5 year old jumping around during a school recital while the lights flared everywhere. Even the special effects couldn't make up for that travesty.

Overall, a disappointing show that would have been better had they just not done individual tributes in the first place and kept everyone in the Memoriam video. People still would've complained but they wouldn't have been angry at certain artists getting priority over their favorites and ultimately not being satisfied with the performances or semi-performances that took place. Too bad Lauryn and Rihanna (never thought I'd say that) weren't there.

Agreed on all.

I also thought the Bowie trib was just Ok... was dangerously close ot being an impersonator act - but Gaga was sincere and performed with love and respect.

I FFWD thru Lionel's trib - was never a big fan outside of Commodores.

I heard sound mixer heads were rolling after Adele's performance - a mike dropped into the piano? The peeps at Staples said she sounded amazing live!

I agree that her tribute was genuine and heartfelt, I just felt that they used the wrong approach. It may have been what the show producers wanted though.

I watched the Ceremony last night and the Producers and The Entertainment Director got it right this year...It wasn't a 3hr Funeral service and each memorable performance stood on it's own...Well done GRAMMYS, well done....

______________________________________________________________________

Taylor Swift: I like Taylor, I think she's a Cool young Lady and she seems to be comfortable in her own skin..That opening Performance was WEAK as hell...Talk about Bubble Gum Pop city..Taylor's "Album of the Year" acceptance speech sounded like she was pissed off but she still said what she needed to say.

_______________________________________________________________________

Kendrick Lamar: That Brotha is not from this World..When you watch him all you can say is "Where did this being come from?"...I mean, everytime I see him perform it's as if I'm seeing him for the first time..His Gift is supposed to take him beyond the World of Music..He's the epitome of Greatness...

_______________________________________________________________________

The Weeknd: I predicted my Boy would win 2 Grammys and he did...

_______________________________________________________________________

Lalah Hathaway: I predicted she'd win a Grammy becuz she has become a Grammy darling. Her Father would be proud of of her and the body of work she's sharing with the World...

________________________________________________________________________

Alabama Shakes: I heard the name in the past but I NEVER seen them or heard their music..I am now a FAN of that Rock Band..I love their sound and the sincerity in their Music..

________________________________________________________________________

B.B. King Tribute: The Tribute was too awesome for words...My first time seeing the Talent that is Chris Stapleton..Chris's voice is a fusion of Country, Blues & Soul...He's dangerous...

________________________________________________________________________

GaGa: There was no way she could run through those songs LIVE...She had to Lip-sync, keep up with her recorded vocals and Dance her ass off...I'm still scared of that Lady...She did David right..

_________________________________________________________________________

Adel: Maybe it was me but Iwas holding my breath everytime OL'girl went for those Damn notes...That song she sang is a difficult Ballad to sing LIVE and there was a moment when I wondered if she was gonna pass out from pushing her Vocals. I could tell she was pushing herself to go higher and still sound beautifully..She's got the Range but that was a "walking on eggshells' performance...Did she still do the Damn thang?...Hell yeah cuz a'aint NOBODY can touch Adele's songs and that unique Voice...Props to Bruno Mars for co-writing...

Cole's image was included in an "In Memoriam" video for artists who have died recently.

I knew somone would feel slighted considering how many deaths occured this past year. sad

Bowie sold 140 million records.

The Eagles alone sold 150 million records.

Natalie sold 30 million records.

No offense, but when it comes to popularity and impact she's not anywhere near the same league as a Frey or Bowie.

-

No offense taken. I was just posting that to give insight to how the family felt about it for conversation. I knew somebody was going to be pissed. It never fails.

-

As far as numbers go, I don't think albums sold should be the only criteria considered when it comes to things like this either. Sometimes an artist impact and influence can't be quantified to merely albums sold.

Natalie Cole's Family Blasts Grammys For 'Disrespectful' Tribute

Natalie Cole's family was not happy about the "forgettable" homage paid to the late singer.

"Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister," Cole's sisters Timolin and Casey told Entertainment Tonight after the show.

And Bowie's family is far from pleased. The reason the Glenn's worked is because Don and the band would not perform with anyone but Jackson Browne.

-

Yeah I read about his son too.

I know I'm late. Just watched this performance....

-

I didn't see the show live. Only been able to catch certain performances on YT. From what I can tell, Kendrick was a standout.

The look on Lionel's face when Brickhouse was performed...

He know he didn't originally sing lead on it lol

You would think that in putting the tribute together, that would have been realized. What asses!
