damn...I really loved this man's music. I', sitting here with tears in my eyes thinking about how much his music enriched my life. The song I loved most by David Bowie is "The Man Who Sold The World". It's also my alltime favorite Nirvana song (which was a cover of Bowie's timeless classic). :'(

This thread belongs on the front page of Prince.org, as a tribute to one of the best composers and musicians of our time - and one of the greatest influences on Prince. Prince's work would not have been possible if Bowie hadn't come before him: His play with gender, his cross-dressing, his play with roles, images, and personas. Every Bowie LP in the 70s was the creation of a whole new world - just as Prince followed it in the 80s.

I was having a Bowie blitz last night, went through both Blackstar and The next Day and listening to parts of Lets Dance... Couldn't believe the news this morning, it's a sad, sad day indeed...I'll miss his genius, not a lot of artists left that come close to his creativity...

The Thin White Duke, the undefeated heavyweight champion of the eternal outsider, a jazz handed, gittanne smoking, Iggy Pop resurrecting, Labyrinthtights destroying, cocaine avalanche inhaling, genre contortionist and escapologist, Berlin triptyching force of nature. The Man Who Fell to Earth, a chameleon and inspiration for those who know him and those still yet to be born. Thank you sincerely for the gift of sound and vision.

whistle said: I cannot imagine a world without this man. I just cannot... Me neither. I'm still in shock. I just can't believe there's no more David Bowie. I can't accept it. I'm so fucking depressed. I know that's silly because he was a famous artist and I didn't know him personally. But I can't even say how much the man's art meant to me. This is just crushing. The entire album has such a different context now. Wow. I wonder if the musicians he played with had any inkling about his health. If not, it must be a strange and sad feeling now. I can't imagine. Yep, hearing interview w/manager says album was planned for his passing.
Tracks like "Lazarus", ending w/ "I Can't Give Everything Away" have a new dimension.
Girl Loves Me - "where the f*ck did Monday go?"
Released on his birthday, before his passing on Monday, w/lyrics from the other side. His last gift to us all. Cheeky, talented f*ck. Gonna be less interesting without him around.

I would imagine they did - I've known for quite some time and I'm not even remotely close to his circle, just know some people who are and they knew but, of course, were not allowed to say anything. Even though I've been expecting this, it's still a massive shock and dreadfully sad. He was such an important artist to many, myself included, that the impact his loss is having is surprising some people. But he lives on through his wonderful music, which can be enjoyed forever. RIP David x ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I don't believe it. He will be greatly missed and leave a great void in the world of music. What a legacy he left us.

Rolling Stone. His producer stated that it was "planned" the album, as he knew his death was near.

Stunning. All of it. That he was generous enough to even think about a "parting gift" for his fans, as he was dying. That it, Blackstar, is as incredible a gift as it is. That he stuck around to see it released, and was gone just days later. [Edited 1/11/16 7:40am] "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

New York Times: Music
David Bowie Dies at 69; He Transcended Music, Art, and Fashion.
This comes as a shock, yet birth and death are life. RIP Mr. David Bowie.
I read somewhere Mr. Bowie worked — writing songs in bed — to the end. What an amazing end, the final period to sum up an extraordinary artistic career. Bowie and his many gifts arrived at the right time — end of the 60's thru 70's — when radio and the music industry pretty much allowed folks to do their thing. Bowie music (early stuff) was primarily played on "alternative radio" stations in the States. Maybe this explains why his songs and albums milled around the top 40. No matter, the collective work of Bowies' couldn't and wasn't ignored. I always got the impression... yes, he wanted to be successful but Bowie created the best music he could and allowed the chips fall where they may. It's fitting that Black Star was released on Bowies' 69th birthday. In my humble opinion, a very damn good album.
