My pleasure ID.
Sometimes you listen to new music and it just takes a while to sink in. It's not always that you need time to assimilate complexity when it's presented to you - deep lyrics, layered meanings and arrangements, for example. No, there are occasions when you need to embrace the beautiful simplicity of it all. A recent case in point for yours truly. Sam Outlaw's 2015 release Angeleno, which ended up being in my top 20 albums of 2015. Here we have another one. Twenty-four year old Dori Freeman’s debut album is a spell-binder. You see, it's her voice, as pure and defining as you could possibly imagine - it commands the air around you.
Freeman comes from the tiny but very important music town of Galax, Virginia. It lies along The Crooked Road music heritage trail in the Appalachians and has fascinating attractions like Barr's Fiddle Shop, the Rex Theatre and is close to The Blue Ridge Music Centre. Galax also hosts the annual Old Fiddler's Convention which has been going for around eighty years. There’s a deep vein of music running through the generations here with families of musicians dating back a hundred years. I travelled a good part of The Crooked Road including Galax in 2014 and you can read my account here. Dori Freeman's debut album is out February 5, 2016 on Free Dirt Records. Produced by Teddy Thompson, it's crammed full of achingly beautiful originals and demonstrates a surprising maturity. Freeman's voice has immense range and subtlety and I can almost imagine her singing Ulysses by James Joyce backwards and it would still sound enchanting!
Plenty of musical variety here - straight-up country, unaccompanied gorgeous gospel, Western swing, neo-folk, doo-wop and soul The album was recorded over only three days in New York City and enlisted artists like Jon Graboff (The Cardinals) on guitar and steel guitar, Jeff Hill on bass, renowned pop/jazz pianist Erik Deutsch (Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash), drummer Rob Walbourne, and violin phenom Alex Hargreaves (Sarah Jarosz, David Grisman). Dori Freeman's arrival is a blessing for us all. Just Music-No Categories-Enjoy It! | |

Sky Ferreira confirms her new album Masochism will be released this summerIt'll be her first record in 3 years. 6 HOURS AGO
Sky Ferreira has (sort of) given us a timeline for that new album. The singer confirmed that her second record Masochism will be released this summer in a new interview with Dazed. Explaining the title, she said: "I became a bit of a masochist in every single way - for a while it was like, 'If it doesn't hurt then it's not real'. That is honestly how I felt. "I'm still in the thick of everything changing, but change, like, sucks! It's good in the long run, but it's f**king weird and uncomfortable. When I feel like I've reached the point where I'm somewhat comfortable with it, that's when the album ends." Meanwhile, Ferreira previously confirmed the first single from the alb...rly 2016'. The singer recently teamed up with Primal Scream for their new track 'Where the Light Gets In'. The key to any cover song, especially one that’s been attempted about 7,322 times, is to either just blow it out with high energy or really add something to it’s core. The latter is the tact Daniella Mason and her band employ here in this brand new, live recorded video. Subtle guitar lines that come and go add new melodies to the classic, genetically ingrained r’n’r ballad (made most famous by Elvis Presley), while Mason’s phrasing adds her own elongated style around the simple rhythm. The visuals too take an old trope—grainy film projections over a band playing on stage—and invite in equally subtle superimposed blocking and colors that increase, swell, and eventually fade back, the whole little film moving like a moon rising and falling over an evening. It’s quite lovely in its simplicity. Mason self-released some singles over the last few years. Demi Lovato liked them enough to bring Mason on her “Neon Lights” tour as an opener, and she co-wrote “Push” from Nick Jonas’ debut. But one hopes that, as she gets courted by the glossy demi-stars of today, she’ll keep bending her ears towards the crooners of the mid-century for the moving ideas on display in this one-off video. Mason is currently wrapping up her Warner Bros. debut, due out this year. We asked her about it and more. Check out her replies and the video, below.
Tell us about the making of the video.
So you’re obviously an Elvis fan? How did the Warner deal come about, and what’s the plan for the new album?
RYAL - Photo by Rachel Brennecke
Somewhere between a glitchy bedroom-pop loner and a female Chris Isaak, RYAL‘s new elegiac single waxes and wanes forward towards intentions of something more epic, but remains sullen. Echoey guitar strolls dutifully along, encouraging the nervous synth drones to make it to the end, while the New York singer’s high-toned vocals grab the most attention. Not unlike the scratchy, dusty, beautiful video for the song, where young girls play along calm beaches as quick glimpses of something more strange and undefined superimpose themselves into the otherwise lovely visions. Written from the perspective of RYAL’s recently deceased mother, “Another Song” and it’s video might not be representative of the overall dancey, mid Prince-inflected vibe of her self-titled, self-released EP, out February 19, but it is as striking as the EP gets. It’s one of the truisms of music videos: you can never have enough pink flamingos in them. That’s even truer if you do slick, catchy, rearview ’80s dance pop the way 21-year-old Belgian songstress Alice Dutoit, aka Alice On The Roof, does. The premiere of this new video for “Lucky You” looks like someone doing a shot-for-shot remake of a lost, local Floridian perfume commercial circa mid-80s, replete with flamingos, neon and topless boys. And before you know it, Ms. Dutoit starts to kind of morph into a pink flamingo herself. “My song’s about how you feel when you triumph over someone who has fooled you,” says Dutoit,” and obviously underestimated you. Glitter’s on the ground, you’re ready for the show show show. And so is the flamingo.” She’ll be at SXSW, and probably tour dates later in the year. “Lucky You” is from Alice On The Roof’s debut album,Higher, available March 18 via Label et Labet.
Born in southern France and raised in Vermont, Francesca Blanchard‘s music has a similarly mixed feeling. Here on Rame she strums with efficient delicacy over a tempered drum, with harmonies that come and go like the streams she’s walking through in the video. The juxtaposition of bits of rural slide guitar twang and the romantic cadences of Blanchard’s French lyricism make for a steadying folk tune for a chilly, early fall morning. Check out the video, below. Rame is from the 23-year old’s debut LP, Deux Visions, out October 2 on Vis-A-Vis Records. -

A somewhat sullen Fiona Apple or a warm-blooded FKA Twigs, Morly is a newcomer producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer from Minnesota who’s getting some notice, but quick. This new video for the single “The Choir” is as minimal as the song. Morly’s breathy, barren voice is about the only thing there, with slight harmonies, a deep, dark, downy beat, and quick synths passing like the rare glimpses of dancer Briddy‘s face and a mysterious hand that graces his frame throughout. Morly will appear at SXSW; “The Choir” is out now via Cascine. Check out the video below.
Listen: https://soundcloud.com/morlymusic Quick catch up: MORLYMORLY reveals how bumping into Prince backstage convinced her to walk the musical path. Published: 13/02/16 There’s something innocent about MORLY. Born Katy Morley, the singer, whose voice dances on the cusp of something perennial and star-like, is pop at it’s more pure and simple. In her first interview since starting out with her musical project over six years ago, MORLY speaks with us over the phone to discuss the beginning of it all. An adventure in its own right, finding and keeping her voice has a been a challenge that she's slowly getting to grips with. Utilizing her innate ability to connect the dots both intellectually and artistically, MORLY creates music for those who want to close their eyes to see the stars. Hey MORLY, where are you right now? Morly: "I’m in Venice Beach actually." When did you move to LA? Morly: "I never really moved here, sometimes I still feel like I live in Minneapolis." When did you start making music? Morly: "At the very end of 2010 I bought Abelton and Machine as I wanted to learn how to produce music." How is producing something for you different than making something from scratch? Morly: "I don’t really know what that word means anymore… [laughs] it has so many different meanings now." I’d say producing as a word now is just as easily thrown around as “DJ” was 10 years prior. What would production in that 2010 context mean to you? Morly: "It’s almost a euphemism for “electronic artist” or even a composer. Because I know a lot of producers who then give their work to other producers, which is what the traditional role of a producer. I’ve only produced someone else’s work once, so I don’t even now if that qualifies me as a producer." How was that process different for you? Morly: "It was really fun. I like my work to be really good and I’m a bit of a perfectionist. With that in mind, it kind of takes task pressure off because you’re only doing one side of it. And it’s fun to work with another artist. I think that’s how it’s actually supposed to be done. For me, I guess I’m very introverted, and usually make music alone. Lately I’ve been working with other people and it’s much more fun." Back in 2010 you would have been 22, what was it that propelled you to start making music? Morly: "Oh my gosh, a hundred reasons. I’m trying to think of where to pick up the thread…I remember as a little girl buying Aretha Franklin. I bought something like a compilation CD and I listened to it on loop trying to sing like her, to the point where it’s kind of sad as I realised I was never going to sing like her. The idea of music being magic. In college I studied neuroscience. I studied everything because I’m a massive nerd. I love academia and I love learning. I graduated college really sick and went back home to my parents in Minneapolis while all my friends moved to New York. I was just the saddest person and I didn’t know why. I realized it was because I needed to do music. It was just this feeling and I was terrified to do it. Why do you right, you know? It’s like what Rilke says, “If you can not, you have to.”"
What happened next? Morly: "I went back to Minneapolis and somehow got roped into this band Gayngs and I only sang on one song. It was just a silly band that was around in 2010 that my friends made. So we preformed at First Avenue, which is Minneapolis’s club. When I finished singing my one song, which I had been terrified to sing so I ran backstage, and into Prince." Oh! Morly: "He’d been backstage watching me. I jumped back- I’m 6’1 and he might be 5’1, he came up to my bellybutton. I backed up against the wall because it was a narrow corridor and he smiled, and nodded at me. I think of it kind of like a sign that I was meant to do this."

Alias used by George Harrison credited on track of new Eric Clapton albumEric Clapton's new album, “I Still Do,” announced Feb. 18 by his label Surfdog Records, features an appearance by a guitarist named “Angelo Mysterioso,” an alias previously used by George Harrison. Angelo Mysterioso provides acoustic guitar and vocals on a single track, “I Will Be There.” Harrison previously used the alias (under the spelling Misterioso) as co-writer of “Badge” for Clapton's old group, Cream. A San Diego newspaper reported the new track features Harrison. “I Will Be There” is one of 12 tracks on the new album that also includes musical contributions from Andy Fairweather-Low, once of Amen Corner; Paul Carrack (Roxy Music, Squeeze); Chris Stainton of Joe Cocker's Grease Band; Henry Spinetti, brother of Beatles friend and actor Victor Spinetti; and Ethan Johns, one of the producers of Paul McCartney's album “NEW.” “I Still Do,” Clapton's 23rd studio release, will hit the streets on May 20 and marks a reunion for Clapton with Glyn Johns, who previously produced his “Slowhand” album. The album has one more Beatles link. The cover art, an illustration of Clapton, was done by Sir Peter Blake, co-creator of the sleeve design of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Blake’s signature is included at the bottom right corner of the cover on the new album. "I Still Do," which has original songs by Clapton, is a follow-up to his previous release, “Eric Clapton & Fri...J Cale,” released in 2014. “This was a long and overdue opportunity to work with Glyn Johns again, and also, incidentally, the fortieth anniversary of ‘Slowhand’!” Clapton said in announcing the record. Antonique Smith Lives In The Moment On ‘All We Really Have Is Now’by 24 hours ago0 Following her September 2015 single “Higher (Let Your Guard Down),” Grammy-nominated songstress and actress Antonique Smith releases the beautiful and powerful song “All We Really Have Is Now.” Written by Emeli Sande and Toby Gad, “All We Really Have Is Now” is about living in the moment, something many of us don’t do. “I just wanna breath in, stop second guessing, look at your smile and take it in / Try to relax and live in the moment, it’s all that we’ve got to believe in,” she sings on the chorus.
Listen: https://soundcloud.com/an...ave-is-now “This timely song reminds you of what’s important. We’re all guilty of focusing so much on what we want, what we don’t yet have or what happened in our past, that we don’t appreciate the moment we have now,” mentions Antonique. “That moment is all we have …as tomorrow is not promised,” she adds. Smith’s EP Love Is Everything is available now on iTunes. NYC Songstress Raphaelle Releases Video For Haunting Single, ‘No More Pillow Talk’by 22 hours ago 0 Meet Raphaelle, one of the most alluring talents to develop out of the New York City music scene in years. Today, she drops her video for “No More Pillow Talk,” a moody, black-and-white visual that captures failed romance thanks two actors in an empty theater, told in a story through Raphaelle’s emotive voice. As the song and video progresses, you’ll hang on to Raphaelle’s every note. The NYC singer calls Etta James and Nina Simone inspirations, and it’s clear to hear in her music. “The one common thing everyone can relate to is real raw emotion and I want to share that,” she tells Pigeons And Planes for the video’s premiere. I think she succeeded!

This title will be released on March 11, 2016. - LIVE: Peter Noone in Conversation with Micky Dolenz, Westbury, NY (01/07/16)“Don’t get me drunk, pissed off, and armed,” Micky Dolenz says, barely five minutes into his conversation with Peter Noone. And we know we’re in for one hell of an evening. “Peter Noone in Conversation with Micky Dolenz” isn’t what most people expect when two musical legends of the ’60s appear together onstage. It’s not a concert; it’s more like an episode ofInside the Actors’ Studio or — maybe more fittingly given Peter Noone’s dashing three-piece suit — The David Frost Show. Noone acts as interviewer, a clipboard of questions on hand, ready to ask the former Monkee “all the questions that I don’t think he’s ever been asked.” But Noone hardly references his prepared questions as the two share stories and memories like only old friends can. Except unlike most old friends, their stories involve the Beatles, the Stones, and the wild life of the ’60s rock scene. The focus was initially on Dolenz, but became more a conversation than an interview, with Noone telling nearly as many stories as his subject. Though it was a dialogue, not a concert, there was plenty of impromptu singing interwoven with their stories, and included everything from Dolenz’s spot-on imitation of a Caruso-style operetta singer (his father, in fact, who was an actor once signed by Howard Hughes), to the two friends spontaneously harmonizing on the singular novelty song “Witch Doctor.” A guitar player sat in the background, adding accompaniment whenever one of them launched into song, and provided subtle scoring throughout the conversation — a nice touch. As expected, these two pick up on each other’s musical cues and sing together like only old friends can… well, old friends who’ve had #1 singles, that is. Dolenz and Noone are animated and engaging storytellers, supplementing their stories with songs and even acting out a few of the funnier tales. Crowd favorites included Noone’s most embarrassing moment (which of course, involved John Lennon!), and Dolenz’s glee at how the Monkees’ innocent reputation allowed some of the more “bad boy” rockers avoid drug busts by hiding out in their hotel room. The two have similar senses of humor, finishing each other’s thoughts with sharp one-liners reminiscent of a Beatles press conference, and their genuine affection for each other kept the crowd at ease and laughing all night. The audience learned new things about both performers, as they showed aspects of themselves and their careers that few casual (or maybe even not-so-casual) Monkees or Herman’s Hermits fans may not have seen before. This was a real conversation, not canned or meticulously rehearsed. When Dolenz tells Noone, “I don’t think I’ve ever told you this one before,” it was clear from his friend’s reactions that he really hadn’t. And that only added to the feeling that anything could have happened during those two hours. “Peter Noone in Conversation with Micky Dolenz” is the first event in an exciting year for Dolenz, as The Monkees’ celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2016. Keep up with Peter Noone at peternoone.com, and find out about Micky Dolenz’s concerts and 50th anniversary events at mickydolenz.com.

Demi Lovato drops emotional video for 'Stone Cold'Demi Lovato really brought it in her new music video for the latest single "Stone Cold". 'Lovatics' (the name given to her dedicated fanbase) got what they were waiting for late on February 23. The pop superstar, Demi Lovato dropped the music video for her latest single "Stone Cold" off her Confident album and got all kinds of emotional. The clip shows Lovato roaming through snowy mountains in Utah and in a bathtub singing the raw, emotional ballad. “God knows I tried to feel/Happy for you,” she sings, clearly on the verge of tears. “Know that I am, even if I/Can’t understand, I’ll take the pain.” The song is about watching a former lover finding interest in someone else. It's indisputable that you'll shed a tear or two. There's something about the stripped down quality of the music video that makes you feel nothing but hurt for the singer. It's raw, emotional, and beautiful and Lovato captured that wonderfully throughout the clip. She really dug deep into her feelings to really capture the essence of the song. Way to go Demi, you made us cry. This was the hardest video shot for the singer which is mostly due to the waist-deep snow she had to trek though. "I didn't have a coat on - I just layered and layered and layered, so it was difficult," she revealed to Entertainment Tonight on February 19. "So when you have like three pairs of leggings and you're in the snow, and it's not snow pants, I wrung my pants afterwards. It was just soaking wet because I had been in the snow for so long," she went on to say. "Stone Cold" was directed by Patrick Ecclesine, a photographer who has shot marketing campaigns for Hell's Kitchen, Homeland, and Project Runway. An incredible job he did with the video. Congratulations to Lovato and Ecclesine! Lovato is set to head out on tour this summer with Nick Jonas on the 'Future Now Tour' and will kick off June 24 in Sunrise, FL at the BB&T center. Yesterday evening in the Salon of the Hotel Rex, Lara Downes presented the latest installment of The Artist Sessions, her occasional series of “close encounters between musicians and audiences” (her words). Her guest for this particular event was violinist Rachel Barton Pine; and the central topic of both conversation and performances was composers of African descent. The program was framed by the music of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor from England and William Grant Still from the United States. Taken together, the careers of these two composers spanned about three-quarters of the twentieth century; yet their presence on concert programs has never been much more than sparse. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London in 1875 and studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villers Stanford. One of the first public performances of his music took place at the Three Choirs Festival, where his work was included on the program on a recommendation by Edward Elgar. The author of his Wikipedia page states that “Coleridge-Taylor sought to do for traditional African music what Johannes Brahms did for Hungarian music and Antonín Dvořák for Bohemian music.” To this end his Opus 59 (published in 1905) was a collection of 24 Negro Melodies for solo piano. Written in ternary form, each provides an exposition of the source melody, which is then complemented by a “reflection” in a different mood in the middle section. Last night’s program began with the tenth of these, “Deep River,” in an arrangement for violin and piano by Maud Powell. Curiously, Jascha Heifetz seemed to have had a love for this spiritual and would sometimes play it as an encore selection. The background material for his RCA recording claims that Heifetz played his own arrangement for violin and piano. However, those who have heard both versions are likely to agree that Heifetz was probably aware of Powell’s arrangement (which, like Coleridge-Taylor’s original, was published in 1905). At the other end the program concluded with the first movement, entitled “African Dance,” from Still’s suite for violin and piano. Still himself knew little about African music, so the thematic and rhythmic vocabulary of the score is entirely original. Nevertheless, one can sense the sorts of impressions of Africa that motivated the spirit behind his composition; and Pine and Downes had no trouble capturing and delivering the essence of that spirit. The other African-American composer included on the program was Daniel Roumain with a performance of his “Prayer” for violin and piano. In many respects this amounted to a reflection over about a century of the opening selection on the program. While “Prayer” was an original composition rather than an arrangement, both pieces shared the perspective of profession of faith through understated rhetoric; and both Pine and Downes seemed aware of this parallel in their approach to performance. The most fascinating “African connection” in the evening, however, was an acknowledgement of George Bridgetower, the first violinist to perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Opus 47 sonata in A major. Because Beethoven later had a falling-out with Bridgetower (apparently over a woman), he changed the dedication of the sonata to Rodolphe Kreutzer (who never performed it, finding it too difficult). However, the original title page carries the dedication “Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto Brischdauer, gran pazzo e compositore mulattico” (mulatto sonata composed for the mulatto Bridgetower, great fool and mulatto composer). Pine and Downes thus honored Bridgetower’s significant role in early nineteenth-century chamber music with a vigorous account of the Presto movement that concludes Beethoven’s Opus 47. Pine also included a selection by Johann Sebastian Bach, the Gavotte movement from the BWV 1006 E major partita for solo violin. While this piece had no “African connection,” Pine explained to her audience that this was a French dance form that was both exotic and “modern” to Bach, who knew of little beyond his own relatively limited corner of Germany. She also observed that Bach’s decision to set this “exotic” dance as a rondo, rather than conventional binary form, suggests that, in this one movement, Bach was looking to the future while so many of his other pieces were looking to the past. Considering that these Artist Sessions tend to run about an hour in duration, last night offered a generous serving of content. The prevailing tone of the evening was one of devoted appreciation to the music, and it was an appreciation that could easily be received by the listeners. Pine clearly has great interest in researching the background of the music she chooses to perform, and she has just as much delight in sharing her discoveries with her audience without ever letting her enthusiasm bog down in pedantry. The San Francisco concert scene definitely needs more events like those Downes presents through The Artist Sessions.

Grammy-winning Earl Klugh returns to Jazz Alley for 40 years of cross-over musicPlay
When you come upon Earl Klugh’s official website, you will see the contemporary, cross-over guitarist’s world-wide influence in the dizzying array of exemplary events he’s been a part of or is about to jumpstart soon. The Grammy-winning, Billboard-topping artist once again hosts his star-studded Weekend of Jazz at the Broadmoor for the 13th time April 7-9 at the five-star Colorado Springs resort. The stars include Keiko Matsui with David Benoit on acoustic pianos, Tower of Power, Grammy-winning Brazilian master Sergio Mendes, and the 2016 Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Jamison Ross. Klugh broke in the new Blue Note Hawaii in Waikiki, appearing live Jan. 26-31, as a part of the opening month of headliners. Klugh is no stranger to the islands, having shared a memorable duet with Hawaii’s ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro— another Blue Note Hawaii headliner — on the eight-minute, instrumental version of the Eagles’ “Hotel California,”from Klugh’s 2013 smash hit record, the Grammy-nominated HandPicked. It was a fusion made in heaven, the natural result of two likeminded musicians who found a kinship instantly on board a jazz cruise in 2008. Then, there’s a charity book launch, the 2015 Stanbic Misty Jazz Festival in Zambia, Southern Africa, Klugh’s own 6th annual Weekend of Jazz at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, S.C., where he reunited with Shimabukuro, along with a select group of other contemporary jazz names. The man just does not stop. Seattle’s Jazz Alley is next, as the Detroit-born superstar and master of acoustic-classical guitar celebrates 40 years of recording history, March 17-20. With him: keyboardist David Lee, drummer Ron Otis, bassist Al Turner, and Tom Braxton on sax and flute. The 13-time Grammy nominee and winner (with pianist Bob James on the 1980 pop instrumental, One On One) is touring in celebration of the 40th anniversary of his debut album, the self-titled, 1976 Blue Note record of note. You know what that means, Klugh fans. He’ll pick from over 250 assorted original songs, crowd favorites, his favorites, and memorable collaborations. Expect Klugh to dip into his most recent collaborative effort, HandPicked, where he got to mix it up instrumentally with a host of artists from other genres, like rock-jazz-Hawaiian shapeshifter Shimabukuro, experiential jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, and multi-instrumental, country singer-songwriter Vince Gill. “I’ve been so fortunate to be able to create the music that I’ve wanted to create, and work with some of the greatest artists of our time,” Klugh said in press for the 40th anniversary shows. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since that first record!” Klugh’s mastered the art of other-worldly yet global music that touches the hearts of everyone in the audience, from the jazz enthusiasts to the younger, dreamy pop fans hungry for beautiful, unfolding melody. This jazz-pop veteran is ready for you all.

Upcoming Releases!MarchTwo vintage Micky Dolenz rarities to be released for UK Record Store DayTwo unreleased tracks by the Monkees' Micky Dolenz will be released forRecord Store Day in the UK, 7A Records has announced. The songs “Chance of a Lifetime” and “Livin' On Lies” will be available as a 7-inch gatefold single set on clear vinyl and will be found at independent record stores. The release date for the single is April 16. “I came up with the idea for ‘Chance of a Lifetime’,” said producer and songwriter Tom Deluca. “I’ve always been a huge fan of the original Monkees’ catalog and wanted to write something new with the original vibe attached. Mike [Slamer] came up with the idea for 'Livin’ On Lies.' We got together with Micky and finished both songs. We had a lot of fun.” According to the record company, these are two Dolenz recordings that fans have been desperate to hear for years. 7a Records’ Glenn Gretlund said, in announcing the record, that he first heard the songs in the early 2000s and had since tried to locate the owners and producers. Micky Dolenz is said to be “over the moon” that these songs that he wrote are finally being released and he will have a solo single out at the age of 70. The company said there are no plans now to issue the songs on CD. The company says that for now, the record will only be available as an exclusive Record Store Day item in the UK, but then a couple of weeks later in the U.S. 7A is also releasing a two-CD set of live on-stage talk sessions by Micky Dolenz and Peter Noone discussing their life and music called “An Evening With Peter Noone & Micky Dolenz.” It will be out in the UK March 7 and the following week in the U.S. Dolenz will also be the first guest on Tom Petty's new Sirius/XM satellite radio show, “Tom Talks to Cool People.” The Monkees also recently announced a new album, “Good Times!,” and a 50th anniversary tour. It was recently announced by Rhino Records' John Hughes, executive producer of the album, that all three Monkees will be fully involved with the making of “Good Times!” The Monkees TV series will be issued on Blu-ray in April.

Andrew Bird has collaborated with Fiona Apple on “Left Hand Kisses,” the second song he’s shared from his upcoming album Are You Serious after the rocking “Capsized.” “My inclination was to write a song about why I can’t write a simple love song. The song began as an internal dialogue,” Bird says of the track. “At first it was just my voice. Then another voice came creeping in and I thought ‘this should be a duet if I can find the right person.’ I needed to find someone really indicting. She was totally committed. The session was a long whiskey-fueled night — unhinged, for sure. All worth it, of course. I can’t write simple love songs. People are complex.” Man, a long whiskey-fueled night with Andrew Bird and Fiona Apple sounds incredible. Listen to “Left Handed Kisses” below.
Tour dates: 02/26 Amsterdam, NL @ Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ Are You Serious is out 4/1 on Loma Vista.

New Music: Yuna – Places To Go (Produced by DJ Premier)FEBRUARY 22, 2016
Singer Yuna debuts her new single “Places To Go” featuring a beat from legendary hip hop producer DJ Premier. The song is the latest single from her upcoming third album “Chapters” which is set to release May 20th on Verve Records. Along with the news of the new album comes the announcement of her upcoming Spring tour, which is set to begin April 29th in Washington D.C. The tour will take her across 15 stop including shows in New York, Philly, Boston, Los Angeles and more.
As the r&b genre has moved away from the mainstream and the major label structure over the past decade, many artists have gone under appreciated and overlooked in the process. Being an independent artist allows for the ultimate creative freedom, but doesn’t always allow for maximum exposure. As a result, r&b fans haven’t always been able to track down the good music they’ve been yearning for. Mya is one of those artists who has certainly gone under appreciated. She developed herself into an r&b favorite following the release of her debut in the late 90’s, and hits like “Movin On”, “Case of the Ex”, “Best of Me”, and “My Love Is Like…Wo” made her a star. She further increased her celebrity by being a part of the massive hit “Lady Marmalade” from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack which made her a household name. She has now returned with her 7th studio album “Smoove Jones” which released on February 14th, 2016; exactly 18 years after she released her debut single “It’s All About Me” featuring Sisqo. What many may not have realized is that this is Mya’s 8th project as an independent artist, including EP’s and Mixtapes, via her Planet 9 record label. What many may also not have realized is, she has continued to make good music. “Smoove Jones” is no exception. As the album begins, you’re tuned into “Smoove Jones Radio” and Mya is the host. She promises to take us for a ride, and that’s certainly how the album plays out. The strength of “Smoove Jones” is in the diversity of sound, where Mya is able to effortlessly mesh contemporary r&b with progressive production. She gets trendy at times, but does so tastefully, and only to accentuate where her music is rooted in. The album’s first single “Welcome to my World” is a great example. Mya gets smooth and sensual over the mid tempo groove where she takes her man into her zone. The next single “Team You” falls into the same category, featuring background chanting similar to what you’d hear from Future, but those are only minor details on this smooth r&b cut. Mya professes her love for her fans on the song, and that’s really who this album is all about pleasing. She really shines on “One Man Woman (Ol’ Skoo’ Joint)” which is vintage 90’s ballad. Her vocals are beautiful as ever and we’re taken back to the elements that made us love Mya in the first place. The song that follows is “Circle of Life (Ol’ Skoo Joint)”, a dance floor ready house song where she gets her groove on. She then gets super smooth on the breezy song “Coolin'” where she compares her man’s love to Summertime. Things get interesting on “Elevator” featuring a rap verse from Smoove Jones, which is actually Mya rapping herself. It’s a progressive song, but Mya doesn’t stray too far from her comfort zone. “Spoil Me” follows a similar pattern equipped with trap drums and an uptempo beat, but once again Mya seems right at home. “Smoove Jones” wraps up at just 12 songs and it’s clear that even on her own, Mya knows how to create good music. The album is a success in creating an r&b album in 2016 that maintains the integrity of the genre while also incorporating progressive sounds. While so many artists struggle to maintain commercial relevancy, and have the quality of their music suffer in the process, perhaps they can look to Mya as a blueprint on how evolve gracefully.
Rnb artist Bilal treats fans to the latest visual from his 2015 album “In Another Life” with the video for the song “I Really Don’t Care”. The video is the latest single from the album, from which he premiered the visual for “Love Over Money” with Kendrick Lamar last year. Last night at the 2016 Grammy Awards, Bilal won an award for his participation on Kendrick Lamar’s successful “To Pimp a Butterfly” album.
Brian McKnight is in love. This should come as no surprise to anyone who’s viewed his Instagram accountover the past year and witnessed the beautiful way he’s celebrated his woman. He’s been one of the premiere r&b artists delivering love songs over the past two decades, and that’s the running theme throughout his new album “Better”. Now on his twelfth album, Brian McKnight can create hits in his sleep. His music has ventured into some more progressive production over the course of the past few albums, but he really looked to take it back to the origins on “Better”. In speaking about the album when it was announced last year, he laid out his plans for the album
Just as he planned it is the way the album plays out. McKnight sings his heart out on the twelve song set consisting of all positive love songs backed with live instrumentation and a good mix of tempo. Just as he’s been able to do so successfully in the past, McKnight starts off the album with a great first single. “Uh Oh Feeling” is a groovy uptempo jam laced with his smooth vocals serenading his lover. We felt the song was one of the best in 2015 when it released, and chose it among our Top 100 R&B Songs of the Year. This was followed by the release of the title track, a progressive power ballad where he croons about how his lover makes every day better. A real standout from “Better” is the song “Like I Do”, a signature and vintage Brian McKnight ballad. Backed by a keyboard laced production, he professes his deep love for his woman. He takes it uptempo on the funky “Strut” where he can’t get enough of watching his woman show her stuff. Notice a trend here? We told you he was in love, and this album is all about celebrating his woman. “Can’t Take It” is an uptempo jam equipped with electric guitar where he can’t handle the anticipation. On “Lovin You From a Distance”, he can’t take the thought of his woman going away. “Enough” finds him yearning to be with his woman every minute because too much is never enough. Brian McKnight didn’t do anything groundbreaking on “Better”, but what he did was deliver a solid r&b album that is true to himself. Avoiding the temptation to latch on to trendy production was a smart idea, and the live instrumentation utilized throughout the album gives it an authentic feel. He’s proven once again that he is a master songwriter when it comes to creating love songs. Every song on the album is a positive expression of love that anyone who feels love or has felt love can surely relate to.

Just ahead of her upcoming album Milestone, Christette Michele released her trap-laden mixtape, Steady Gang Mix. Headed by the previous releases of “Steady,” the Yo Gotti cover “Down In The DM,” and a cover of Adele’s “Hello,” Michelle is clearly making a statement about the direction of her new sound. However, it’s not all foreign: on “Private Destination,” Chrisette gives fans another one of her slow jams, and on “Edge Of The Bar,” she offers her usual fun, whimsical side. Chrisette is ready to show a different side to herself on her forthcoming project. She told HotNewHipHop, “I’m ready to play. I miss being a choreographer. I miss my leather pants. I miss being excited. I love my ballads, and there will be some in this new album, Milestone, but it’s time to let my hair down and step outside of the box. I can’t wait to share.” Get a taste of Chrisette’s forthcoming LP Milestone with this appetizer, Steady Gang Mix mixtape. Free download: http://www.datpiff.com/Ch...um=piff.me
FANTASIA RETURNS WITH "NO TIME FOR IT": HEAR THE EMPOWERMENT ANTHEM
The 'American Idol' champ kicks off her upcoming fifth album with this lush kiss-off track
Just as American Idol returns to our lives one last time, one of its most successful winners is back with a slick new single. Fantasia revealed "No Time for It" today, which previews her upcoming album. Over a polished, percolating mix of synths and trappy snares, Tasia showcases an empowering anthem about dismissing your critics and haters with lyrics like, "You wanna tell me how it is, but there’s no time for it / You wanna tell me how you feel, but there's no time for it." Despite being a biting kiss-off track, the singer delivers it all in such a cool, collected manner, making this song more of a subtle anthem. "No Time for It" kicks off Fantasia's as-yet-untitled fifth studio album, slated for release this year. The LP will follow 2013's GRAMMY-nominated Side Effects of You that included the single "Without Me" featuring Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliott. ANTHONY HAMILTON ANNOUNCES FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM ‘WHAT I’M FEELIN”
Following the release of his new single “Amen,” soulful crooner Anthony Hamilton has officially announced his forthcoming fifth studio album, What I’m Feelin’, will be released on March 25 via RCA Records. The project reunited Hamilton and longtime collaborator Mark Batson, who produced 10 of the album’s 12 tracks. Batson co-wrote and produced the singer’s top 5 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs hit “Charlene” and the title track from his breakthrough second album, Comin’ From Where I’m From. Previous Hamilton collaborators Salaam Remi and James Poyser produced the new album’s two remaining tracks: “Take You Home” and the aforementioned “Amen.” “What I’m Feelin’ is a special album for me,” says Hamilton. “I reconnected with one of my favorite producers, Mark Batson, who produced my most career-defining records so it made sense. Alongside my engineer Bruce Irvine, we all decided to record in Nashville so we could really focus on creating a special sound. Björk working on new music that will 'blow you all away'Last album 'Vulnicura' was released in January 2015 Bjork is set to release new music, according to associates Tri Angle Records.
The Icelandic singer released her most recent album 'Vulnicura' in January 2015, which was produced by Tri Angle artist The Haxan Cloak. A recent Instagram post from Tri Angle Records boss Robin Carolan sees him discuss Björk's creative process, denying speculation that the star doesn't produce her own music. "Just wanted to get something off my chest, because it's been irritating me - I'm constantly being asked if Bjork is in charge of her records," the statement reads. "Simple answer; yes. She is the boss. 100 percent. She writes, produces, composes, sings. She might bring people in to facilitate her vision, but first and foremost it is HER vision. Guys (and it's always guys) need to understand this. She needs no one. How much incredible music does one woman have to release until people cut this crap?" Tri Angle then add: "And yes, her new material is going to blow you all away." Björk cancelled her 'Vul... last year, citing a "scheduling conflict beyond control". In a statement posted online at the time, she also said that "performing this album has been intense" due to the personal aspect to the record. Björk had described the LP as a "heartbreak album", influenced by the breakdown of her relationship with artist Matthew Barney. Just wanted to get something off my chest, because it's been irritating me - I'm constantly being asked if Bjork is in charge of her records. Simple answer; yes. She is the boss. 100 percent. Review: Charli XCX Speeds to Her Next Career Checkpoint on the ‘Vroom Vroom’ EPSPIN Rating:
Release Date: February 25, 2016 Label: Vroom Vroom Recordings The unifying factor in every release of Charlotte Aitchison’s still-young career — aside from the oft-stunning expertise in songwriting and boundless level of confidence on display — is the dedication to voice. Which isn’t to call Charli XCX a master ventriloquist, as much to say that she’s virtually peerless when it comes to committing to a pop character for one project, and no longer. The cloud-hearted daydreamer of True Romance didn’t have a ton in common with the class-cutting prom queen of Sucker, and though we never got to hear Charli in full gutter-strutter mode on her shelved new-wave LP, judging from the tracks that leaked, she would’ve been pretty unrecognizable there too. In previous generations her ability to persona-hop may have been criticized as formless; luckily we can recognize her as just, y’know, creative. The four-track Vroom Vroom EP — Charli’s inaugural release for her new label of the same name — is perhaps the most singular work of Aitchison’s career thus far, because in contrast to the groupthunk nature of her previous LPs, this mini-album comes with just one partner at the helm: SOPHIE, good friend of the PC Music family, and producer behind one of last year’s most visionary collections. The unpredictability, elasticity, and sporadic abrasiveness of Sophie’s post-pop soundscapes prove an obviously inspired backing for Charli — particularly on the set’s title-track opener, which pinballs between menacing, EBM-laced synth-stomp and twinkling, Sleigh Bells bubble-thrash at breakneck speeds. Charli’s calm on the chorus serves as perfect contrast to the track’s sonic mania, invincible even standing in the middle of the track: “Bitches know they can’t. CATCH. ME!” (Put her alongside the Beatles and Bowie in the “Beep Beep” Hall of Fame, too.) The skittering trance of the next track, “Paradise,” travels even further down the PC Music wormhole, to the point of getting the collective’s maybe-breakout star Hannah Diamond to contribute a verse, shimmering brightly but threatening to subsume Charli altogether. Luckily, she roars back with the K-hop thunder of “Trophy,” using an Uma Thurman sample from Pulp Fiction to trigger a cheer-chant explosive enough to send Sucker-era Charli and her cronies back to the physics club. And the clanging closer “Secret (Shh)” might sneakily be the set’s most incendiary cut — it’s a grimy, groaning snap-ballad that sounds like Charli and SOPHIE trying their hands at “Pour It Up”-eraRihanna and Mike WiLL strip-club soundtracking, ending with something far more alien and disquieting, but no less seductive. Vroom Vroom is scintillating new ground for Charli, totally unlike anything she’s ever done before, and still quintessentially her in its streamlined, indomitable turbo-pop. But the most exciting thing about Vroom Vroom is that it doesn’t actually feel like a bold new direction foreshadowing a major career left-turn for Charli. It just feels like her having a 12-minute laugh with a similarly brilliant collaborator, whizzing past you and burning rubber — before getting back to business on LP3.
