The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has officially announced next year's inductees: Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, N.W.A and Steve Miller will all join the class of 2016. They will be inducted April 8th during a ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, with tickets on sale to the public in February. HBO will broadcast the show in the spring.
That's a really weak set of inductees. I mean I like Cheap Trick well enough, but hall of fame?! Hall of mf-ing fame?! You really should be of some substance, not an average late 70s, early 80s rock band. Chicago is probably the strongest band on there, and even they're not all that.
You know how a considerable percentage of people that primarily listen to rock feel about disco.
They'll probably let them in gradually, one act every few years.
Who decided "rockers" are the king makers on who does and doesn't get into the Hall? I'm waiting for the artist or band who gives the R&R Hall the, . It's all subjective, an artist or bands discography in my humble opinion gives credence to a career.

Seriously? It's called the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The reason why they started letting artists like Madonna in is that they've had an influence on rock music and its perception in overall.
So RRHOF is definitely a Boys Club with Women trickled in here & there....N.W.A had the biggest Power Players & Media coverage backing their induction, so that should have been a no-brainer when we discussed the nominations weeks ago....Once again they have to sell tickets to the Ceremony and they need Heavy backers to keep donations coming in.,(Not for profit Organization)....It is all about Politics..

Dinah Washington didn't sing R&R neither did Earth, Wind, & Fire.... Lets get real.
The Blues: R&B/R&R/Jazz/Funk/Gospel music are all Blues based and came from the South. Some folks in this US, use to define all of these genre as, "jungle music". I'll limit my adjectives because the name calling was much worse. What's my point? The Blues music and all of its derivatives were never apart of the establishment. The music and the musicians wrote the songs, were outsiders. The music was apart of being rebellious
Now all of a sudden we have a click, deciding who's in and who's out? If Madonna got into that joke of achievement...
The Hall should just punch out gold name plates for every singer/musician that every played somewhere and let everyone in.

It's not called "Blues music and all of its derivatives Hall of Fame".
The idea is fairly simple:
Getting in is a form of recognition given mainly to rock musicians. They are also going to let in a limited number of artists from other genres that can be considered "close enough" to rock or that have been influential in the development of rock music. They do that because they don't want to be seen as complete dicks and maybe, heaven forbid, some of the people responsible for the nominations even listen to soul stuff.
Of course it's cliqueish. It's also a terribly dated idea that some sort of "dad rock" is the highest form of popular music and everything else is secondary to it.

If we're going that route, Rock & Roll was over by the early 1960s. Rock & Roll are your Chuck Berrys, Elvis, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, those guys.
This is really the Popular Music of America Hall of Fame, but Rock & Roll sounds so much better.

If that's the case, Milli Vanilli should be inducted. Their debut album did sell 6 million in the US, which is more than any Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Lou Reed, or Supremes album. Girl You Know It's True outsold NWA's albums too. Mannheim Steamroller should be in also.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
The Monkees were a manufactured boy band - doubt they will ever get inducted. I would be surprised if any boy band gets inducted.
Me too.
[Edited 12/17/15 20:17pm]
Your right - a boy band was inducted.
The difference between the Jacksons and the Monkees is the Monkees were formed by a corporation by placing an ad in trade magazines and holding auditions to manufacture a boy band. That's not how the Jacksons were formed. The Monkees are viewed as a product not a band. The Monkees never performed until NBC created them. The Jacksons were a group way before Berry Gordy came into the picture.
The RRHF will probably never induct a group like the Monkees. Personally I don't consider the Monkees to be equal to the Jackson 5. Maybe you do. [Edited 12/18/15 14:22pm]

Who had an influence, how many 1 hit wonders are in the Hall?
What influence did Percy Sledge have other than giving Michael Bolton a hit? A lot of acts lipsync in concert nowadays. Even classic rock acts like Roger Waters & Motley Crue have been rumored to lipsync parts of their shows and they don't dance. So that's a really big influence that Rob & Fab made. Milli Vanilli wasn't a one hit wonder anyway. Several of their songs went Top 10 or Top 40

Real rock and roll has always been about giving the finger to authority, whether it be your parents, the cops, your boss or the government.
The Hall is just another authority figure, the people that think they're in charge of curating popular culture for the rest of us, deciding what's truly great.
I don't have trouble with any of the people that got in.
I think the case could be made that the single most influential act on the music that's popular today is Kraftwerk - isn't that more valuable than boring old Steve Miller?
And even though they're partly inspired by Kraftwerk, NIN did a huge amount to meld heavy guitar sounds with dance music, one of the last big leaps forward for "rock" music. Isn't that more relevant than soft-rockin' Chicago?
But Deep Purple is one of the most overdue choices to finally make the cut. That's hard rock 101 AND also rewards advanced studies, with two of the great virtuosos of the genre in Blackmore and Gillan.
I wonder if Blackmore will play with those guys again! First time since the 80s, if it happens.

You can say this about many bands. U2 never performed until Larry put up an ad to form a group. That's no different than NBC putting up an ad.

i think i get his point. there is really no criteria to who gets in or why, there are one hit wonders in the hall while much more successful and influencial artists are shut out. basically there is a group of people who decides who they feel is worthy of being inducted into a private elitist club.
Meh! Let's agree to revisit this post-- AFTER-- the tickets sold and televised viewership are counted.

Politics is about money.
Everything is about money, period.
But honestly, how else do you expect to fund the cost of the annual inductions and the cost of keeping the RHOF Museum running? Would you rather have it covered by taxpayer dollars? It's not like the museum makes a ton of money from admission revenue, only about 35% of it's revenue. After all, it's located in Cleveland.

Feel free to give it the finger.
I don't see the Hall as an authority figure. It does nothing except honor musicians for lifetime accomplishments, can't say the same for cops/government/boss. Those who run the Hall came up with the idea and put the time & effort into running it. If they shouldn't have a say in the voting process, then who should? Certainly can't make it 100% popularity vote. While they obviously make many questionable decisions, I don't see there being a better alternative.
As for giving the Hall the finger, nobody did it better than the Sex Pistols

Rob & Fab was a joke to LittleBLUECorvette, since he said it's the "Popular Music of America Hall of Fame". Milli Vanilli were popular until they were found out. Maybe they still are going by the Youtube views of some of their videos. Many acts are popular, so there is not much criteria for that
Jann Wenner was inducted himself. Well why don't they induct the founders of their competition from Creem, Spin, & Hit Parader?
