I never really watched the STMAs back in the 90s (& before?) when they had REAL singers/musicians/performers..
I happened to be flipping channels the other night when the show was on & like "Daft Punk featuring Pharrel".. I got "lucky" because Cameo was coming on to perform.. (I think they had that little "codpiece" skit right before Cameo started..)
but, wow.. was I dreaming or did Cameo only do ONE VERSE of "word up" (to me.. not even 1 of their funkier songs - as popular as it was back in '86) WHY bring these LEGENDS OF FUNK on stage.. to do only 75 seconds of a song??
then.. I know Larry & the boys are no longer in their 20s.. but uh.. well.. I'll just leave it at that because Cameo has brought - & continues to bring me high quality funk music.
as for the STMAs show itself. I'd probably watch paint dry next year before tuning into this again.
I'll see you tonight..

Yeah I noticed that Larry Blackmon was moving and singing really slow. Perhaps he's had some health challenges going on, who knows. It was almost as if he was struggling to keep up with the tempo of the music...but still, it was great to see them. That whole codpiece skit wasn't needed. It was odd because it didn't fit in with the context of the awards show, so I dont' know whose bright idea that was but it should had been shelved. A montage of Cameo's past music/videos would had been a excellent intro to the band's performance. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Oh and Erykah Badu was an excellent host too. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I agree that a montage of videos probably.. would have been better. maybe Larry didn't want to do the codpiece but acquiesced to get time to perform.. I'll see you tonight..

That whole codpiece thing was just stupid and on the low digs at Bill Cosby. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Absolutely loved Erykah as host. Love her soulful, singing voice. They brought back r&b at this show.

LOL!!!
I agree. I was just pointing out how the older black pop stars had class and they weren't stuck up. They supported the black award shows and organizations. Today's pop stars only support the white award shows because they feel like they are bigger than the show. I was glad when they gave Jill Scott best female R&B. I was hoping they would give best male to D Angelo but I guess that is asking for much They need to give it to the real soul artists and give it to the artists that actually support the show. Why constantly give the same award to an artist that never shows up and doesn't support Soul Music? LOL [Edited 12/2/15 19:54pm]

YASSSSS HONEY!!! Like I mentioned before, the whole entire segment was FIRE! It's a crime that no one on youtube has posted the whole thing from Troy Beyer introducing him..the montage...the tribute with Patti Labelle, Stephanie Mills and Chaka Khan (I believe???) and on to the clip I posted above with Prince coming out like the ultimate bad ass in that lime green ensemble! You hit the nail right Aon the head. The Soul Train. IMusic Awarwods used to be a MUST SEE awards show in my household. It was so exciting to see Michael, Prince, Janet, Whitney, etc. all the big black pop stars as you said, perform and/or make an appearance. In the late 80's and early 90's, I believe Eddie Murphy made an appearance at the show almost every year. It was surely something to see. In fact, at the 1992 ceremony when they honored Prince with the Heritage Award, that was THE best montage I've seen put together for him an any awards show. Then when he came out in that lime green suit with the boots to match.... I remember the crowd was wild during his whole entire speech! Let me see if I can find it on Youtube.... Wow! What a big difference compared to the crowds response from the recent (2015) American Music Awards. I avoided those shows but it was easy to feel the change at the Soul Train shows after 1996. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

So glad they bought the Soul Train Awards back. We need it. Many of those artists are not afforded the opportunity to perform or get nominations on other award shows like the AMA's and BET Awards, which are geared towards younger audiences. It's hard to find fault with any awards show where Miss Lalah Hathaway is performing. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I don't think Chaka performed at the tribute. During her appearance on Soul Train in 1992 to promote "The Woman I Am", Don Cornelius mentioned Prince to her. He said there was a Prince Tribute performed at the recent Soul Train Awards. He asked Prince what did he think about the tribute and Prince asked him, "Where was Chaka?" You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Thank you so much for posting this MickyDolenz because I was really concerned about Karyn White. As much as I absolutely LOVE myself some Fantasia and think she gave an awesome performance, I could not shake the feeling that something must have been wrong with Karyn White for HER not to be there. Now we know she's just fine, as gorgeous as ever and still singing BUT absolutely NOBODY involved even thought to contact her??? I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

- - This was niiice! - I think I need some more Chrisette Michele in my life. Her voice sounds so ill on this. She must need better songs or better single choices. I hear glimpses of this dope artist but where are the memorable songs? - Lalah is straight from her daddy's soulful tree. No surprise there.
