Those are great stories.

Yeah, I love those too. I really feel like I'm in the Old West when I hear them. Just like Romance In Durango always takesme back to Mexico. Maybe I should spend some time in Mozambique...

Of course Bob is a better lyricist than Prince. No question about that. Take time someday to go through his list of songs and lyrics. It should blow you away.

Then again, Prince is a better showman. 2freaky was just being his freaky self here... wink

He's better than Prince at sharing, preserving and honoring his legacy with the public. His latest in the Bootleg series (Volume 12!) is about to be released and includes every single take from what many consider to be his creative pinnacle 1965-1966. http://www.mojo4music.com...verything/

Definitely. I've been eyeing that box set for some weeks now, and although ultimately I'm not really that much of a Dylanologist that I need 18 discs of mostly alternate takes, the fact that it's out there for those who are interested is amazing. Musicians of similar stature could learn a lot from Dylan in terms of preserving their legacy, particularly Prince who is probably one of the worst at it tbh. Although being priced at around £100 I'm sure there are other motivations for Dylan coming out with such a huge box set beyond honouring his legacy wink

wink A cynic may say that lol I stopped buying every one of his sets about 10 years ago - and Im kinda glad because when you look at all the reissues and sets that have been released since I'd be one broke mutha! Great that they are there though...

If you buy only one of those box sets, make it The Basement Tapes. No Dylan collection is complete without it.

No doubt, Dylan live is so boring and his songs are unknown because of his rearragements

All of the Bootleg Series sets are practically mandatory. I especially loved Another Self Portrait.

From Llily,Rosemary and The Jack of Hearts i love especially these lineas:

Rosemary started drinking hard and seeing her reflection in the knife
She was tired of the attention tired of playing the role of Big Jim's wife
She had done a lot of bad things even once tried suicide
Was looking to do just one good deed before she died
She was gazing to the future riding on the Jack of Hearts.

The cabaret was empty now a sign said. "Closed for repair"
Lily had already taken all of the dye out of her hair
She was thinking about her father who she very rarely saw
Thinking about Rosemary and thinking about the law
But most of all she was thinking about the Jack of Hearts

Beautiful poetry.

From Red River Shore:

"She gave me her best advice and she said
Go home and lead a quiet life"

"Well, the dream dried up a long time ago
Don't know where it is anymore"

"And the frozen smile upon my face
Fits me like a glove"

"Well, we're living in the shadows of a fading past
Trapped in the fires of time
I'd tried not to ever hurt anybody
And to stay out of a life of crime"

Well, I'm a stranger here in a strange land
But I know this is where I belong

Though nothing looks familiar to me
I know I've stayed here before

Everybody that I talked to had seen us there
Said they didn't know who I was talking about

Sometimes I think nobody saw me here at all
Except the girl from the Red River Shore

What an ending, what a conclusion

Two years ago in Amsterdam, he was excellent, playing mostly Tempest songs. This year, however, he plays so many Sinatra covers that I decided to give it a miss.

I've never actually been to see him but I've heard that nowadays he can be hit or miss. In his prime he seemed pretty damn great live though, from what I can gather from recordings. Who knows what Prince will be like live when he's 74? Maybe he's still be great, maybe he'll be hit and miss like Dylan seems to be right now.

I'm going for the 6-disc version. The 18-disc is intense.

Yeah I might just do that as well, although I've been thinking about getting the Complete Basement Tapes instead for Christmas, do you have that one, would you recommend it? Annoyingly that's still listed as £100 on Amazon despite being only 6 discs so might be a bit pricey unless there are some holiday deals sad

I can thoroughly recommend The Basement Tapes 6 CD set. It's got everything they recorded back then and sounds great (CD 6 islower quality.) Where The Cutting Edge seem to be mostly different versions of the same songs, Basement has hundreds of songs on it (sometimes two takes of the same) so you can listen to them as albums. It's hard to judge a box that isn't out yet, but if you buy only one, I think you should go for The Basement Tapes.

Yeah that did seem to be one of the advantages of The Basement Tapes box set from a cursory glance at the tracklists of the two. I've been reading Greil Marcus' book about the tapes, Invisible Republic, so fully immersing myself in the entirety of the recordings very much appeals right now. It's just the price that's the main sticking point right now, we'll see how my finances look come Christmas smile Thanks for the advice.
