You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Here's Phil singing at his son's middle school in 2014 You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. I agree. Also, Phil's use of the Roland-808 drum machine on top of his trademark snare drum with reverb always kept Phil's sound unique. "Sussudio" to me is a great tribute to Prince's innovation without coming off as a gimmick. Ready For The World is a bigger culprit of ripping off P's sound. Phil had hits with the "No Jacket Required" that got significant airplay on both pop radio and r&b radio. What I admire about not only Phil but Sting and Michael McDonald is that their music naturally was embraced by Black radio listeners by being themselves. Whereas Robin Thicke rode black music trends by having "co-sigs" by Lil Wayne, Pharrell Williams, Rick Ross, T.I. to get in good before he showed his true colors by suing the estate of one of if not the greatest progenitor of the genre he supposedly loves. OK, RANT OVER 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

So, apparently a bunch of pretentious-ass hipsters are petitioning for Phil Collins to retire from music. I cannot imagine how pathetic a person's life would have to be to bother starting that petition (or even signing it). Plus how many of their sorry asses have appeared in a Bone Thugs video? And I see all of your creations as one perfect complex

It's very silly for anyone to petition any artist to "retire". I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Too late. He already retired. Now, he's coming back... "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Man, Phil is a god. Go listen to "If Leaving Me Is Easy". This is a white artist's version of "A House In Not A Home". If Luther had recorded the same song with his vocals, it would be a soul classic. Phil was Progressive Rock, R&B, Soul, Hard Rock, Funk, even jazz... I hope he tours again, that's a show I won't miss out on. He has a really great cataloge of hits too, I'm always discovering something by him or Genesis I slept on. One thing I've noticed about my favorite artists (Prince, Stevie, MJ and Phil Collins) is that when I start becoming a big fan, I realize that I already knew two-dozen or more of their hits. Musical full-circle I guess
