There's already a thread about this here

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Chante is an amazing artist.....she's pretty, has a beautiful voice, and she has a wonderful, classy image.Seems really down to earth. Her first two albums are excellent but it seems like, after those albums, her record company (and/or management) didn't know what to do with her. They began pairing her with "hot" producers like Jermaine Dupri, trying to turn her into a sexpot singer.I'm not sure if that was the right strategy.

Surprised nobody else is talking about Lakeside and their episode is after Chanté's.

Chante will always be a working Artist but her story needs to be told...Only mainstream Artists get big TV-Bio's..Unsung is telling stories that will never be told on any other Network..I never heard of Lakeside until today...(Edit.."It's all the way Live" is a CLASSIC..I don't think I ever remembered their Group-name for whatever reason.)

She didn't pair with Jermaine until her 4th album. Her 3rd album she worked
with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Rodney Jerkins. Chante's Got A Man was a
monster hit on that album but the label failed to promote the follow up single duet with JoJo(Jodeci)properly.

Definately unsung. Chante never crossed over to the Pop charts with a major hit and a lot of R&B listeners don't know who she is. She has recorded some incredible music. Yet, still never received the attention she deserved. I go back and listen to her recordings from the early 90s and she was hitting those same high notes Mariah was hitting. But, yet she hardly gets any recognition from anyone. Even R&B radio ignores her. I adore her. A few years ago she did an stunning remake of Nancy Wilson's "Guess Who I Saw Today" and she slayed Chaka's "You Got the Love" on her third album. This chick is amazing!

CoolMF

As always, I'll be checking them out, but I'm not going to lie...I can't wait to check out the Lakeside Unsung. Gotta feeling that it'll be pretty sad but I'm hoping that it'll be an interesting episode.

Lakeside stuck GOLD with "Fantastic Voyage" and "Bullseye," but other than those, what are they known for??? I remember a few albums and singles, but nothing remarkable sadly. The same fate befell Chante. Other than her classic "Love's Taken Over" and her Pop smash, "Chante's Got A Man," there's really nuthin' there either that helped her to rise above the competition. Teaming her with Flyte Tyme was a wise career choice, but the record company was pushing to make her more of a sex kitten than a credible R&B vocalist, which she most certainly WAS/still IS. Should be an informative and fascinationg episode! smile

Lakeside had a lot of cool jams!

"Your Love Is On The One" (1980)
"It's All The Way Live" (1978)
"Pull My String" (1979)
"Outrageous" (1984)
"Make My Day" (1984)

i remember the third album being the first album by her that I was disappointed with.Jam and Lewis are great producers, but I wasn't too thrilled with the material that they came up with for Chante. Her first two albums consisted of sexy, sophisticated, melodic grooves.....kinda Sade-ish in certain spots.....those two albums were like a breath of fresh air,at a time when other female R&B artists were doing hip-hop influenced sounds with "hot" producers.

I'm surprised no one is talking about I Want To Hold Your Hand. That song was huge in

my area and it was sung at a lot of weddings. lol

Damn believe it or not this is my first time seeing a video for I Want To Hold Your Hand.

Lakeside definitely were seeking something different here as they traded in the Pirate outfits

for the Stylistics styled tuxedos. lol

Damn Chante killed that song!

They were also known for their album covers having a specific theme. For Fantastic Voyage the group were depicted as pirates. Your Wish Is My Command had them as genies. Shot of Love pictured them as Robin Hood-era archers and Rough Riders had them as cowboys.

I never really cared for their Beatles remake.I prefer their uptempo funk jams.Unlike Cameo,Con Funk Shun, and other funk bands,Lakeside didn't really have a lot of great slow jams, imo.

I don't own any Lakeside beside their main hit on a Funk compilation.

How would you all rank/compare them to other Funk outfits of the late 70d/early 80s?

Cameo
Slave
Zapp
Gap Band
Con-Funk-Shun
BT Express
The Time
Midnight Star
Sun
ect.

I didn't include the likes of EWF, P-Funk, Isleys, Kool Gang because they're on a different level.

I love Lakeside but out of those bands listed,I would say that Cameo and Con Funk Shun were my favorites....but really, they were all great! That's what was so cool about music back then.We had alot of 'quality music' to choose from.
