She is a better singer. She makes much better music. In addition, she is actually an artist. She writes and composes her own music. This is not rocket science. I don't know why people hate on Adele. She is one of the better pop stars we have today.

But Gray where were you when that silly Beyonce C.D. sold how many records? I didn't see this same outrage.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Same thing, I'm not a fan of Beyonce either. Anytime an artist brags about recording an entire cd in 2 weeks, and it souds like it took them 10 minutes, that speaks for itself.
It's not outrage. As a musician I always try to like every project. There is nothing like getting new music for someone like me. In the case of people like Adele, Beyonce, Swift and others who don't move me in any musical way, I still try to understand what people like about the music they create. The only answers I've gotten here, is that it is different. Lol.........there are lots of artist doing creative work that is "different" that aren't selling millions of copies of their projects. LOL. Adele is better than whom? Her music is dull and all the credits goes to her, because she's a white woman. But what about the PRODUCERS, that WRITE, Producte her music? People LOVE praising overweight women, she reminds me of Susan Boyle. Same reaction. lol.
I was in a London studio a week ago, to see her record a TV show, and sing her two new songs (I hadn't heard them before). I'll say this, she's a nice girl and she's an alright singer compared to other white singers, I've heard so many better singers. But she was off key when she sung her first version of Hello, and they had to re-record it. Magic of TV. lol A GREAT singer, should know how to control her voice, when singing high-notes, and overall her vocals didn't impress me, her band did tho. Great band. Music is a VERY diverse universe with many planets, galaxies etc. So you won't be able to like everything, but ask yourself this, Adele gets free marketing - whilst others don't. What does that tell you? How come she gets advertised everywhere? When others have to fight to get the same spot? It is clearly about skin color. She's white, overweight and appeals to the average Joe on the street. It amazes me, how much people of color have to fight to get half of what these white artists get in a year or two. SMH. Yes, I'll bring up her whiteness, because nobody ever talks about her producers, yet call her an ARTIST, while other black artists, always get told that they are inferior for using producers or writers. She had several co-writers and producers on her two latest albums. Her sound isn't even unique, it is ALL Paul Epworth on 21, listen to his projects. and on 25, you can clearly hear the influence of other producers and writers. I've had many conversations with different producers in London, these past months and we came to the conclusion, that what makes her different is her being a white woman that can sing. - What's different is how she seems to connect emotionally with the listener. When I've asks different ones about what they like most about her, immediately they say they "connect" with her songs. People seem to relate to her subject matters (songwriting) and appreciate her vocal performances. She's appeals to people's souls/heart without being a "soul singer". - Not to mention her fanbase is broad. She taps into the young crowd and their parents, and grandparents too. This was evident with the number of CD's sold her first week. The adult contemporary crowd showed up in droves for her. She's probably one of the few artist they feel they can gravitate to in the modern pop scene.

People on this site don't seem to realize the numbers of the adult contemporary and country music audiences. Some of the most popular acts in recording history were AC. Some like standards and showtunes, which is one of the reasons musicals are popular. Country has at least 2 award shows on the major networks and not syndicated or on cable like others genres like R&B. Farm Aid has been going on for 30 years and the performers on that are mostly country or heartland rock. Some also don't know that country is popular with some black people. There's black rodeos and trail rides too. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I agree..... However, I think you are misinterpreting the meaning of "different" when people refer to her as "different". She IS a different type of pop star compared to her peers (Beyonce, Rihanna Perry, Swift, even Gaga when she was hot) in what she has to offer. Does that mean she is innovatve?.... No. Does that make her a Mozart? No.... However, since she offers something different out of the bunch of mediocre pop stars that have saturated the pop market for over a decade, I can see how that is refreshing to the masses. Adele writes about her personal experiences which makes her relatable and believable. She is a very talented singer and while her music isn't my cup of tea. I can honestly say that she tries to be make quality songs and not just silly gimmick trendy music.
She is different when you compared her TO HER PEERS. Now of course there are better artists who make better music but the conversation is about POP music and in the world of POP music Adele is as good as its going to get. I rather see Adele winning a bunch of awards and playing on the radio over those other pop stars. I dont care what race she is, the girl makes quality music and can sing. For the most part, she doesn't rely on gimmicks. She sings her songs and goes home.

Interesting. I could care less about the race factor from a listening point of view. Alice Russell is one of my favorites and I think her work is much better than Adele yet most people I know never heard of her. [Edited 12/20/15 7:42am] FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

I agree. AC artists have always sold a lot of records.

- I thought limiting the format to CD's the first week was a good, quality control move. Smart. That Adult AC audience weren't planning on downloading it online anyway. The convergence of various audiences is how she's done it.

I wasn't trying to imply that you cared about her race. I was actually speaking for myself because reading the comments, I see her race is being a factor in her success which its not entirely true IMO. With that being said, Gray I do agree with your feelings. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a huge fan but I can see why she appeals to people. Don't you at least agree she is better than Katy, Taylor, Nikki and Beyonce in terms of what she offers musically and talent? You don't have to like her music to at least acknowlege that.

Adele is better than Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Nikki, Kanye etc. etc all the way down the pop list. There are better artists (outside of the pop world) but she is one of the better pop stars. The masses have spoken and the receipts don't lie. I do agree that Adele being white is always going give her a "slight edge". The reason why I say slight edge is because the black pop stars use the same white man platform when they martket their albums....Adele is no different, the only different is she is white. However, you don't sell over 30 million copies world wide off of one C.D. simply because your an "overweight white woman". There has to be more to her appeal for her to sell so many records. Even her "21" C.D. is still charting at this moment and she is a great singer IMO.

Better than those folks? Her music is bland just like the other folks that you mentioned. I honestly can't see or hear a difference.
In my world, I either like a "song" or I don't. I could care less about the labels people assign to the song. The pop label means NOTHING when you get down to it. Every style that ever existed has been called on the "pop" charts at some point so what does it really mean? FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

All the way back to crooners like Bing Crosby. AC never really changes that much unlike other music, so it doesn't depend as much on fads or whatever else is popular at the moment. Just about anytime you can find at least one popular AC/light rock act after 1950s rock took over. There were plenty in the 1970s like The Carpenters. It doesn't go out of style for certain people. The local AC station has alwas been here since I've lived here when other formats bit the dust. It's also the station that is played in a lot of workplaces, and it plays Christmas songs exclusively for an entire month. The British singer’s new 25 album has sold more than 5.1 million copies since its release on November 20 and it looks like all those fans and many more showed up for Adele Live In New York City (3.0/10) last night. With 11.2 million viewers tuning in, the 10 PM Lorne Michaels EP’d concert was NBC’s most watched concert special since the 16.56 million who watched Cher Farewell Tour on April 8, 2003. Not including awards show and the like, last night’s Adele show was the most watched Big 4 music special since CBS’ The Beatles: The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute on February 9, 2014, which drew 14.045 million.Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. I get her having a hit single and having a fan base, as she can sing and is classy, I just don't get the massive appeal. I'm not getting anything from her music that's particularly unique or standout. I don't hear the hits or standouts that were on other popular female albums like those from Whitney, Mariah, Celine and others over the years.

Urban is not the main R&B stations. It's like adult contemporary for R&B, kinda older audience. The main R&B stations are the hip hop ones and Adele isn't played there, as there are no collabs with rappers or trap beats.
