Lauryn Hill’s Producer Says ‘Miseducation’ Follow-Up Is Closer Than Ever

As part of their 100th issue celebration, Fader just published a story about Lauryn Hill and the necessity in 2015 for a new body of work from the Fugees legend following her classic 1998 solo debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Buried in that story is information from Hill’s current producerPhil Nicolo, suggesting that new music could actually be a possibility:

She began touring again five years ago as a way of exercising artistic muscle and financing her recording plans, says Phil Nicolo, one of her current producers and a founder of Ruffhouse, the Fugees’ original label. According to Nicolo, she is closer than ever to finishing the follow-up to Miseducation… He says she’s already built up enough material to release a new album, and that musically, it will harken back to Miseducation. Whereas the few tracks she’s released in recent years feature a stream-of-consciousness that is harsh at times, Nicolo describes this work as “much more musical.” It is political, but also deeply personal, he says. She is drawing “from all of her inputs.”

Of her comeback, Nicolo goes on:

It’s not that she feels like, ‘You can wait for me!’ She wants to be right. She wants to be perfect… I can say this: I know creating makes her very happy.

Though that’s obviously nothing conclusive, it’s always nice to hear that one of a generation’s most influential musicians is working on something new. All we can do now is wait — as we’ve been doing for quite some time.

I've seen some recent live clips and it looks like Lauryn has finally got herself together. If she releases a stunning album, she might be able to make a great comeback.

People tried to dog D Angelo and write him off but when he got his stuff together, he made a great come back. I think we need to start rooting for our great artists. Its not a whole lot of them especially in this generation of crappy music. Its unfornate that some of them have had personal issues that have stopped them from making music but if there trying to get back into the swing, I am all for supporting it! We need artists that will keep real music alive! Go Laurn!

I Love Ms. Hill but OL'girl just aint disciplined..She's a wonderful Mother, she can still Rock the Mic but as a Solo Artist her Heart has been somewhere else. Marriage & Children made her deeper than she already was....

You got that right and along with Marley, that religious guru nut she hooked up with didn't do her any good either as she seemed to lose her grip on reality. I hope she puts out an amazing new album, but it can't be Miseducation part 2, it has to stand on it's own.

Hip hop has changed SO MUCH since the mid nineteen nineties when she was an emcee blossoming from The Fugees. There's just no way she can make an album with the same kind of genre-straddling impact.

She is still unique and though hip hop has changed, apart from Kendrick and a few others, not significantly enough for her skills, consciousness and female perspective to not be refreshing and NEEDED. i agree with mjscorousal, we have to root for the few "real ones' we have left even if it takes a couple decades. i'd rather hope than speculate about the WHY behind it being so long. None of us know for sure

The funny thing about the Black Eyed Peas is.....they took their hiatus just as I was becoming a big fan of theirs mad I think their 2008 album The E.N.D. is incredible.I really enjoyed those songs.

The latest word is that they're gonna reunite for a new album, but it will come after Fergie's solo album.

Their next video be like bananadance bananadance bananadancelol I made it thru like the 10th Back. I think it was back to the future. How about... ran out of good ideas to pilfer? Maybe Lauryn should work with them since they can get shit like this released with a video. Will is a decent producer. It would sell.

back on topic....

It would be cool if Lauryn could ask Carlos Santana to play guitar on a track.Whenever these two collaborate, something magical happens ("To Zion","Do You Like The Way").

I say take hip hop right back to the mid-90s. Somebody needs to.
