just because a band had only one hit, doesn't mean the rest of their music means nothing.

I don't think anyone here is saying that. But there is a reason why the term "one-hit wonder" exists.

Sure. Like I said, I think we all agree on this. So I was a bit surprised how this turned into a big discussion.

Billboard magazine is an industry magazine which labels and shareholders can monitor their investments. My point was how does that impact your listening pleasure? I understand the term one hit wonder, I would like to know of what value and significance does this demeaning and artistically hindering label provide anyone outside of shareholders and record labels? . [Edited 9/26/15 11:09am]

"One hit wonder" sounds like a bitter term a record label exec made up that amounts to "good for nothing", but for who? Only the corporation/shareholders.
The term negates the artists whole body of work and career. It may not even reflect their most culturally significant or impacting work and most likely not their best.
Its a damaging term.

Haus, "one hit wonder" may be a dismissive term, but it's an honest one. For example, Deon
Estus did not score another Billboard hit after "Heave Help Me." He had one hit, bro. So, if you
are going to have a problem with the term "one hit wonder," then you also need to have a
problem with "hit," which simply means a song released was popular as indicated by heavy air-
play and sales.

The only person who is importing concepts of "irrelevance," and "good for nothing" into this con-
versation about "one hit wonders" is you. Sticking with my example, just because Deon Estus
was a "one hit wonder" doesn't mean that he's 1) irrelevant; 2) good for nothing; and 3) that
the rest of his work is probably not his best. It just fucking means that he only had one song
that was able to chart with Billboard.

Your argument implies that a hit song makes an artist relevant, good, and indicates their best
work, and that is simply not the case all the way through.

Some interesting trivia about this song: "Ring My Bell",which reached Number One on the Billboard charts in the summer of 1979,was actually intended for another singer....a young Stacy Lattisaw. When it was offered to Stacy, the song had different lyrics about teens chatting on a hotline. It was very "bubblegum".For whatever reason,Stacy's team turned it down and it was re-written (with more "adult" lyrics) and given to a new vocalist named Anita Ward. The rest is history.

Oh wow! Really? It is not that serious!

The purpose of this thread is to highlight, acknowledge, and celebrate the music that many of us grew up listening to or still listen to today that may have been that particular artist's only hit, not excluding other possible releases.

Now let me toss in a few more songs to get this thread back on track. Sorry for not posting videos, but I'm not in the mood to that, but feel free to do so or check them out on Youtube.

Native New Yorker - Odyssey
Sugar Sugar - The Archies
Love Is Strange - Mickey and Sylvia
Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth
The Hustle - Van McCoy
More Today Than Yesterday - Spiral Staircase
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Adorecream

Sad Eyes - Robert John

Heaven must be there - The Eurogliders

Something's missing in my life - Marcia Hines

Let the music play - Shannon

Died in your arms - Cutting Crew

Funkytown - Pseudo Echo

Come and get your love - Reddbone

Me and Mrs Jones - Billy Paul

.

All of the above were one hit wonders in New Zealand, so if they were bigger stars somewhere else, I didn't know and if anyone gets upset - sorry.

.

The term "One hit wonder" is ambiguous, usually it means the artist had one song which made the Top 40 of some large national chart (Such as USA, UK etc) and then faded into obscurity. In reality some of the biggest artists in one market could not crack the charts in another market. Or the artist had more than one single or album and only one song ever hit because of its novelty value (Macarena, Los Ketchup, All the things she said).

.

Take Boney M and Abba, both groups were massively successful in the UK, Germany, most of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, but only cracked the Top 40 in the USA once, so many Americans will write them off as a one hit wonders and some even regard one hit wonders as marginally talented artists who could only produce one marketable song. Taste is fluid and what charts is not always the best indication of how good music is.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

What other hit did she have? And by "hit," I mean top ten placement according to Billboard
Magazine.

Maxi Priest had a hit with Roberta Flack back in the 90s, however, "Set The Night to Music,"
that hit #6, so he was not a one hit wonder.

Troy was Sineads first single and a hit, at least in Europe. Maybe not in the USA, but that just goes to show that a one hit wonder in one country can be famous in another. (As Adorecream also noticed.) And she is still making records. Maybe Hausofmoi had a point after all. I don't think we can call an act who had one big hit but kept making records for years, a one hit wonder.

All you're doing is adjusting the definition of "one hit wonder" so that you can remove artists
you like from it. But if you check with Billboard records, she's only two songs that have charted
on their Top 100:

Nothing Compares 2 U (#1)
The Emperor's New Clothes (#60)

She's a one hit wonder, dude; I don't care if she's had "hits" in Europe and continues to make
records today. A "one hit wonder" does not simply mean the artist put out one record, scored
one hit song, and then disappeared forever. It's merely an indication that the artist scored only
one hit song in their career, however long it was, per Wiki:

"The term one-hit wonder is most often used to describe music performers with only one Top 40
hit single or for having one signature song which overshadows their other work."

Thanks to NoVideo's thread about the greatest alternative singles of the 80s, I realized that there were different singles from Sineads first album on both both sides of the Atlantic. So in America she was a one hit wonder while in Europe she wasn't. Okay. Enough argueing. Here is another one:

I'm glad people aren't letting the pretentious bullshit derail this thread.

With that said, does Suzanne Vega count? Tom's Diner was the shit, but I was shocked to find out later that she put out some great music that had no relatable style to that song whatsoever.

No, Suzanne Vega doesn't count. Marlene on the Wall and Luka were also hits. Toms Diner was a hiphop remix by someone or something called DNA, so that doesn't represent her music at all. But DNA featuring Suzanne Vega, yes, that qualifies as a one hit wonder!

"Emotion" by Samantha Sang (1978) music

Barry Gibb wrote and produced this song, and sings backup vocals and to be honest....it sounds entirely like a Bee Gees song lol Samantha can barely be heard, lol.Great song, though. It was originally intended for the Saturday Night Fever movie but I guess they couldn't find a perfect place for it.

It's better that he is known for one good song than possibly a cheezy actor/singer type of album like Don Johnson.

The inclusion of Sinead O'connor proves the ridiculouness of this industry/corporate created title.

No-one, I mean no-one unless you work for the industry views an artist is such a way.
