YOUR favourite songwriters? I guess we've all seen the Rolling Stone list and of course we all have our own thoughts about it, so here we go. You don't have to make a top 100 (unless you want to), a top 10 will do. So who do you think are the best songwriters? I'll start: Bob Dylan Jacques Brel Holland Dozier & Holland Jagger & Richards Kate Bush Willie Dixon Buddy Holly Joe Jackson Chuck Berry JJ Cale | |

Meshell ndegeocello
Flyte time studios. LA and babyface Sampha James poyser Azealia Banks (her hip hop is on point and you know one day she will drop a classic vocal album . great ear and taste for melody and also a pretty sounding and distinct singing voice. I don't know if she writes but she sure has a high strike rate for good music which indicates a singer-songwriter. Marsha Ambrosius (She is a modern day Angela winbush, patti label ect. Pure r&b and her songwriting is impeccable. Probably a tie for first place) top 5 artist all time. Frank Ocean. Prince. Mariah Carey Bjork The Dream! . And so many more. I purchase a lot of music and find a lot of music via songwriters and producers as opposed to the stage artist/act. I prefer studio produced music as opposed to live as I really enjoy the productions which live settings can't capture. . My taste in production is what snobs call overproduced. I call it lush, intricate and layered. Funny how you can navigate what is meant to be a negative review to find what you like. . Jill Scott and Badu!
This list will keep going. I was listening to a Meshell interview and she questioned what is a writer? Meaning that there is more than melody creation and that instrument players/studio musicians and their performance/arrangement is unique and therfor should be included in the writing credit as nothing would sound exactly as it does without all the elements. For all you know it was the tight bass line and how it was played that made your song a hit.
