30 years ago today: Live Aid - Who was watching?
I was watching basically non stop for 16 hours, except for a few short breaks to get something to eat or drink during acts I didn't care for that much.... I still have plenty of hours taped on VHS. and I would go crazy when the stoopid Austrian moderators would sometimes talk over the music or fade in & out during a few performances. idiots did not even show Run DMC my personal highlights beside the obvious Queen performance were mainly Hall&Oates and Patti LaBelle, also liked Style Council, oh yeah, and Mick & Tina doing State Of Shock and Thompson Twins doing thier shit with Madonna
Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

Oh gawd, I remember watching Live Aid on tv back in the day. I may have taped some on VHS and I have no idea what happened to it oh well........
There were some acts what were not even shown on tv
But yeah, the highlight was definately Queen, Phil Collins, Sting, Spandau Ballet, Bryan Adams, etc. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! REAL MUSIC by REAL MUSICIANS - Prince "I kind of wish there was a reason for Prince to make the site crash more" ~~ Ben |

I remember watching some of it, but I had something to do that day so I missed most of it. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Hmm....I was about 2 1/2 years old, but I can bet you that my parents more than likely turned to for a few times and put me in front of the television. So I guess my answer is yes. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Are you serious? I was answering his question. You mean to tell me talking about race even in relation to music now is "race baiting"?
Ridiculous. | |

I didn't have a TV so I ditched work and rode my bike to a beach bar with a huge TV screen and jamming sound so I could watch Live Aid all day. Tina and Mick, Queen, and so many more. I watched what I could--probably several hours worth, but I have little definite memory (and I was 15, so I really should remember more, I wouild think). I mean, I have memories of various performances--but they're also the ones that I've seen clips or portions of since then, too--so I honestly don't know which memories are of the original broadcast and which are actually of seeing it later. . I do know that I saw them play the Prince video AT THE TIME (and I think recorded it then--unless maybe I recorded it on a re-broadcast?)--so whatever was on either side of it I probably saw, too.

I was the only one in our household into music (the rest are into sport) so I had a hell of a job persuading everyone to have it on all day/night on the big telly. I remember Queen, Bowie & liking Paul Young best (come on...I was 12, Paul Young was great back then).

And why in the world would Prince get shot at Live Aid? He was able to embark on the Purple Rain Tour fine... something tells me this story might just be an urban legend and a tabloid claim. Maybe do, just not like did before

[Edited 7/19/15 14:59pm] As for the other prominent black artists, I can somewhat understand why they didn't participate because of the top (black) artist having reservations but at the same time it wouldn't have hurt them to investigate the situation themselves. I said in my deleted post that rumor had it Stevie Wonder told Geldof (or whoever) that he wouldn't be a part of the event because he refused to be a "token black guy" in reference to the absence of black British acts. Despite this, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin (alongside Hall & Oates), Ashford & Simpson, Teddy Pendergrass, Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, The Four Tops, Billy Ocean, Run-D.M.C., as well as Lionel Richie (performing WATW, no less with the alleged USA for Africa group) were all present at the Philly show. Even The Thompson Twins (with Joe Leeway) performed on the US side interestingly enough. [Edited 7/20/15 9:13am] [Edited 7/20/15 9:19am]

I watched mainly the London part. As a Queen fan is was very happy with their performance. I remember that Phil Collins flew to the States by Concord to take part in the USA show after he had done London. I remember he thought more stars were doing that, only to find out on the plane he was the only one who had been talked into it.

A lot of people say that Phil had one of the best performances of the entire event but are the referring to his UK or US performance?

I think Prince had just announced that he was going to give up touring "to look for the Ladder" so he gave the LiveAid the video 4 the Tears in your eyes instead - which was only ever broadcast once during the event.

I was 11 years old in the summer of '85. We went camping at Rosarito Beach down in Mexico, had my mom's TINY portable TV with us (the screen was maybe 4 inches). I kept running back and forth from the water to our little setup, wanting to see Prince. Of course, I missed him...and never saw the "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" performance until @ 2010 Make it so, Number One...
