Let’s just cut right to the chase – it was a BAD week for album sales. Honestly, record companies should NEVER let a week like this happen again. Unless you’re a total Disney TV movie fanatic, this week’s number one album will totally surprise because of its unfamiliarity. The soundtrack to the Disney TV movie Descendants takes the top honors on the Billboard 200. Go ahead and let the gasping commence... Even though Descendants managed to “score” where peak position is concerned, its impact and sales are tepid to say the least. Descendants mustered up just 42,000 units and that doesn’t account for a considerable 12,000 copies gap between streams and sales. Hopefully the industry and the charts never have to see a number one album perform as horribly as this one. Even those not well versed in the music industry know with so many music lovers in the United States, 42,000 is abysmal.

There was only one other debut in the top 10 – rapper/comedian Lil Dicky’s Professional Rapper. Professional Rapper lands in seventh place with 26,000 units. For an independent effort that seems to rely most on YouTube videos as its promotional force, the Richmond graduate ought to be proud. With Professional Rapper being the only other new entry in the top 10, it means that Joss Stone’s Water For Your Soul ultimately fell short. The contemporary soul singer just isn’t nearly as popular as she once was. With such an unimpressive sales week (can’t state that enough), some interesting quirks occur in addition to the expected. Are Taylor Swift (1989), Ed Sheeran (X), and Sam Hunt (Montevallo) still holding down in the top 10? Of course. Is urban music still doing some work? Yes – Future remains in the runner-up spot, and Jill Scott slips from first to fifth, not unexpectedly. Drake also drops back into the fold at #10 while Tyrese’s three-week stay is at an end (Black Rose).

So what quirks? Twenty One Pilots have a resurgence at #8 with former chart topper Blurryface. Led Zeppelin also resurges to the tune of #9 with rereleased In Through the Out Door. Next week “the sun should shine again” on the Billboard 200 with two power releases: Luke Bryan’s Kill The Lights and Dr. Dre’s Compton. Billboard prognosticates both albums to post gargantuan sales.
