Kanye used to say that his greatest regret was not being able to see himself live in concert - but now he can at least cuddle with HIMSELF! biggrin

I suggested in my reply that in 2015 we could define "rock" broadly to include hip-hop. But that's playing Devil's Advocate for Kanye.

[Edited 7/7/15 14:36pm]

Hey, rappers are the new (or current, rather) rock stars/ hip hop is the new rock and way more popular than rock as a genre has ever been.

See Reply 16, I said the same thing based on the premise Kanye was probably right, until you get to the "living" part.

How are we defining "rock" and "rock star" here?

I remember reading in Billboard a few years ago that it was the genre with the lowest sales. That being said I believe it is Riahanna that is selling the most music.

Kanye does something like this whenever he wants attention. He knows that his rants and him are tiring, so he's trying to make folks pay attention to him again........go away Kanye, and please take your wifey with you!

Sales are a non-factor. Hip hop has a broad and diverse audience, one that rock had never had. Elements of hip hop have permeated deep within pop culture and of course music culture from the apparel, language, rapping, and many other things. Hip hop even if it is the lowest selling genre (which isn't saying much given how pitifully albums of any genre sell now) resonates the strongest in the mainstream/ public eye. Nearly every demographic imaginable listens to hip hop from the urban community to the upscale suburban youth and then some. Rock has never had such widespread appeal.

Reply #16 belongs to Revolution. Even taking the "living" part into account, it's kind of hard to dispute his boast though Kanye leans more towards being a diva (though many rock stars have proven to be divas themselves).

Kanye West is the LeBron James of the music world....always bragging that he's "the best" instead of going out there and proving it rolleyes that act is getting tired

Kanye West was the best rapper in the game at one time. It was all before the death of his

mother and since he seems to have hit a wall. Before his mom's death every thing he touched

turned to gold. He even bought one of my favorite rappers Common his greatest success with

his production skills. Yes he has become arrogant but it's pretty much calculated to keep folks

talking. lol

As far as LeBron James goes if you are blind to the fact he is the best basketball player in the game

right now, then you must not watch too much basketball or either pro MJ or pro Kobe or pro

LeBron hater. lol

I feel that,if a person really is "the best" at something, they wouldn't have to go around bragging. They would just simply go out there and *prove* that they are the best smile Even when it became clear that the Golden State Warriors were gonna win the championship,LeBron was still going around with that cocky, arrogant attitude. It backfired, though smile

I really don't see how any of this has to do with Lebron? He has proven year in and year out that he's one of the greatest players of all time. What more does the man have to do for fuck sake? Kanye on the other hand is just a plain arrogant asshole married to a fake media whore with no talent other than sucking dick! Let's leave Lebron out of this as he has a real talent.

Well, my apologies for the mis-cite, but see reply No. 24, where I basically said the same thing you did about hip-hop as rock music.

As for his "boast" of greatest "living" rockstar, he's no bigger of a diva than say, Prince, but the most successful rockstar of the moment and the greatest living rockstar are two different concepts.

If you're saying it is hard to dispute that Kanye is the biggest rockstar of the moment, then a compelling argument can be made.

If you are saying that it is hard to dispute that Kanye's claim to rock greatness is bigger than those of Stevie, McCartney, Jagger, Prince or other longstanding greats, well, that's an awfully big check to cash.

Well if you want to include Stevie then are we broadening the definition of rock star to be akin to musical icon?

And yes, I meant Kanye being the current biggest "rock star" is hard to dispute.

what rockstar has more hits than kanye in last 10 years? im waiting......

so having hits is defining of "the greatest rock star"?

Well you have to have HITS to be a Star

HITS that people keep playing or copying

A music style/sound people copy! and cross into mainstream culture!

So on this front Kanye is currently "The Greatest Rock Star in the World at the Moment"

Trust me Sir Paul is not going to appear on any "RAPPERS" single

Every rapper has worked or copied his style in the last 10 Years

Every Euro Dance track has used his sample style - since he sampled DP in "Stronger" note his "Prince" call-out a new generation found Purple Rain after that track

His understanding of music and scope is amazing for a non-musician

Hip-Hop has been the new "Rock" for since 1987 and mainstream since 1991 .... "rock" died after this date!

Eye Was Born & Raised On The Same Plantation In The United States Of The Red, White And Blue Eye Never Knew That Eye Was Different Til Dr. King Was On The Balcony
Lying In A Bloody Pool......Call me a Dreamer 2 - R.I.P - James Brown and Michael Jackson

Say what you want about the man himself, but MBDTF and Yeezus are stunning albums.

MBDTF is good but severely overrated and Yeezus is garbage. Give me CD, LR, Graduation, or even 808s before either of them.

808's and Heartbreaks is his best album in my opinion. Masterpiece!
