Apple Music / BEATS1

Just downloaded the new iOS with the new Music App.

.

Beats1 is their flagship live radio station with on air DJs. The first 5 songs I've heard are Bjork, Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, Pointer Sisters, Talking Heads. I'm loving the music selections! And this is their flagship station, not just playing current mainstream shit, surprising and awesome.
It's nice to listen to a live station with actual humans playing music I dig for a change LOL!

.

I had a little listen to the soul/funk station and wow that is kicking total ass. First 20mins:
King Curtis
Ike & Tina
Lee Fields

Betty Davis

Meters

Hank Ballard

Brick

Gordon Staples & Motown Strings

.

Check it for the free 3 month trial if you've got an iOS device or iTunes on your computer. I think it's coming to Android later this year.

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Installed it yesterday on my iPad.

It doesn't hold a candle to Google Play Music or Spotify in terms of it's recommendation engine. It's not even close. I had a party last night, we tried Apple Music for an hour, and Google Play Music, and the latter was the clear winner.

As for Beats 1, it's disingenous. It's 12 hours of broadcasting, which then repeats. They have claimed it's a 24 hour station that's always live. But that's not the case. Google's genre-based radio stations are way better - last night we picked one that said "Having Friends Over" - and you know what? The selection was better than what Zane was playing. And I do like Zane - I actually made the music for a documentary about him that was made by Radio New Zealand.

The "Connect" thing is nice, but it's basically just Ping with a dash of Tumblr, and let's not forget that Ping was a massive flop.

So far, the best thing about it is that Trent Reznor uploaded a bunch of rare NIN stuff..... which has already hit the torrents.

I'll continue to listen while I have the free trial, but it definitely pales in comparison to other services. Functionally it's more or less a rebrand of Beats Music, which itself failed to get traction.

Google Play Music, cut the cheque! Good playlists for groups of people is important too!

I am so digging the soul funk channel, everything played so far, I LOVE! And barely anything that was previously in my library.

.

I think the selections may be based on intelligence from you itunes library, so if you don't use itunes for your collection, it may not work as well...

.

Stoked as!
