More exclusive details on Madonna's new album

Here is the official press release for the new Madonna album 'American Life',which will be released on April 22...

"Madonna's first new collection of original material since 2000's multi-platinum smash 'Music','American Life' is being hailed as Madonna's most accomplished, original and intensely personal album to date; a resonant and revealing emotional journey that marks a new highpoint in a career that has for all time redefined the expressive potential of contemporary music.

Recorded over a full year in London and Los Angeles,'American Life',the artist's tenth studio album, features eleven new Madonna compositions, including the title track and debut single, which ships to radio March 25th.

"All of these songs reflect my current state of mind.I feel like I have just woken up out of a dream. They range from dismay and anger to joy and certainty.Hopefully,I have taken the personal and made it universal",stated Madonna regarding her new album which she wrote and produced with Mirwais Ahmadzai with whom she also collaborated on her previous release 'Music'.Here is the tracklist...

"American Life"
"Hollywood"
"I'm So Stupid"
"Love Profusion"
"Nobody Knows Me"
"Nothing Fails"
"Intervention"
"X-Static Process"
"Mother And Father"
"Die Another Day"
"Easy Ride"

The "American Life" single is also the subject of a brilliant new video from the pioneering multi-media visionary,an artist who single-handedly invented the short music film medium (hey,THEY said it,not me...lol).In a stunning collaboration with director Jonas Akerlund,"American Life" expresses a panoramic view of our culture and looming war through the view of a female superhero portrayed by Madonna set against a backdrop of current cultural obsessions. It's a penetrating examination of our national psyche. The video is scheduled to air the first week of April.

Remixes of the "American Life" single by,among others,mega-hot hip hop diva Missy Elliott,Peter Rauhofer,Felix da Housecat and Maverick Records artist Paul Oakenfold will be available in various configurations over the next several months. An extensive schedule of appearances, performances and special events has been set in conjunction with the release of 'American Life' including an appearance on an episode of the hit NBC-TV comedy "Will and Grace".One of the most original and innovative artists of the modern era,Madonna has sold millions of albums, topped charts across two decades, created an enormously influential body of work in video and film and stood at the forefront of socially conscious artists worldwide. With 'American Life',Madonna has once again reached deeply into her own life as the source and substance of her extraordinary artistry".

And from her W magazine cover story, here is what writer Merle Ginsburg had to say about the new album...

..."no doubt her forthcoming album,'American Life',to be released next month, will lead to another round of Madonna-musing.An introspective tour de force, less melodic or pop than 'Music' or 'Ray Of Light',the record is both darkly self-reflective and socially engaged"...interestingly,the riskiest thing about 'American Life'---which may actually go down as one of her riskiest albums---is it's searching quality, both musically (with it's dark melodies and meandering sensibility) and lyrically. While she holds forth on what's wrong with American society, she also pointedly questions her own place within it."I tried to be a boy,I tried to be a girl",she sings on the title track."I tried to be a mess,I tried to be the best".Ultimately, she acknowledges, with decidedly un-divalike self-analysis,"I guess I did it wrong".

Why do they always put the obvious stuff like

"...One of the most original and innovative artists of the modern era,Madonna has sold millions of albums, topped charts across two decades, created an enormously influential body of work in video and film and stood at the forefront of socially conscious artists worldwide..."

Like there's anyone who doesn't know...

I actually think they went TOO FAR!...lol...I mean,I love Madonna and all,but this press release is sometimes embarassing and just plain silly.Madonna is one artist who doesn't really NEED to have her accomplishments over-hyped in such a blatant manner like that.

HBO is using Madonna's song as part of some type of promotion. You will be able to click on Quicktime or RealPlayer and hear her song playing in the background.

Great, if old, news.

I just hope the promotional tour doesn't include a lot of appearances on actual news shows, trying to argue against this war. I think the idea for the video is great, but if Madonna steps to the level of so many stupid celebrities pretending to know what they're talking about in situations completely out of their league, then she may be in danger of losing me as a fan.

We (the fans on this site) constantly make comments about the war and as far as I can tell, none of us are politicians, either. Why is it then NOT okay for celebrities to comment on it? We're not exactly part of the U.N. Security Council either,so presumably, the war is "out of our leagues" too, right? But does that stop us from exercising our free speech?

I'm not disputing anyone's right to free speech. I'm only exercising mine in criticising them.

A lot of people do express their opinions on the war on this site. However, I get the impression that most of those who do, actually keep up with the news, reasearch their positions, and try to base their positions/arguments, etc. Do you really think celebrities do this? Some do, many don't. If Madonna launches some media campaign that includes this tactic, I'll lump her in with those who don't.

Also, celebrities know that their comments are going to get an inordinate amount of attention from the media and public when they express these opinions. As a result, celebrities seem to tend to think that their opinions are more important than anyone else's and that isn't true.

I've got no problem with anyone expressing an opinion, but if I don't believe they know what they're talking about, I've got no problem expressing criticism of them and what I see as their narrow and uninformed views.

I'm sure it will kick much ass smile btw, the Drudge Report is saying that the video had to be re-edited now that we're in the middle of a war. Haven't read the story yet, but it should be interesting.

Yeah,on one of the Madonna fansites, there was a story about Madonna having to go back and "fine-tune" the video.Translation: she is removing much of the controversial, violent imagery from it.They're saying that the video shown on MTV will be heavily edited.Madonna may eventually release the original video on a future DVD.

As much as I wanna see the original video,I am glad that Maddy is editing it.I would hate to see her take the heat for a video that is violent and controversial, when we are at war.

"eventually" ? well, if it's going to be a bonus DVD in the special editions of the album, i'm sure that's where it'll turn up. the edited will probably just be for TV

Apparently it's being edited mainly due to an image of a baby being killed.

Now... Madonna... why was this in there in the first place? disbelief Here I was hoping this violence thing was a passing fad, but... a baby being killed? I know it's an anti-war statement, but that's just shameless sad
