Record company to replace defective John Lennon vinyl albums from box set

July 15, 2015 10:24 PM MST

Universal Music Group confirmed on July 15 that it has set up a special website to help fans who want to get a corrected copy of the "Rock 'n' Roll" disc from its nine album “Lennon” vinyl box set that the company originally released in June and has now been revealed to be defective. The problem is with two Chuck Berry tracks on the album. The defective version includes a repetition of one track, “Sweet Little Sixteen,” and it completely leaves off another, “You Can't Catch Me.”

You can get a corrected version of the album by filling out a form on the website Universal Music has set up online. Universal says corrected discs are in the works and they will send one to those who provide a proof of purchase for having bought the set. (They say adding the back-to-black download code from the LP set will also help verify your claim.) To get your copy, fill in the form online with an scan of your proof of purchase in a .jpg or .png format in a size 512 KB or smaller. In addition, Universal has also set up an email box for questions. The vinyl albums in the set are also being released individually in August.

The Lennon albums were originally remastered in 2010 from John Lennon’s original mixes at Abbey Road Studios in London and Avatar Studios in New York and were released on CD in that year. The new vinyl masters were cut at Abbey Road Studios. The LPs were manufactured by Optimal Media in Germany.

More Details Emerge on Bon Jovi’s New ‘Album for Fans’

Bon JoviStephen Lovekin, Getty Images

Aug. 21 will see the release of Burning Bridges, the first effort of Bon Jovi‘s post-Richie Sambora era. Today, we’re starting to learn a bit more about the album and the first two singles that will arrive within the next month, but there are still several unanswered questions.

A spokesperson for the band told Billboard that it is “an album for fans and will accompany an upcoming international tour.” However, the person added that “the band is hard at work on their next album, which will see a full-scale release in 2016.” With little distance between the two, it could be interpreted to suggest that Burning Bridges is a largely collection of outtakes.

The first single, “Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning,” gives some credibility to that notion. It’s credited to Jon Bon Jovi, John Shanks — who has produced the last four Bon Jovi — and Sambora, who officially left the band last November after sitting out their 2013 tour. You can hear an unofficial leak of the song here.

“We Don’t Run” was written by Bon Jovi and Shanks and is described as having “meaty production and a shredding guitar solo by Shanks.” The chorus, which includes the line that gives the album its title, could be taken as a thinly veiled kiss-off to Bon Jovi’s former partner, “Not afraid of burning bridges/ ‘Cause I know they’re gonna light my way/ Like a phoenix from the ashes/ Welcome to the future, it’s a new day.”

Still, the Asbury Park Press wonders if Burning Bridges will even have an American release. They point out a reference to the album on the website for the Japanese subsidiary of their label and mention that they are planning to tour the Far East and Middle East beginning in September. There is no official mention of the record on Bon Jovi’s own website, only mentions from fans who have tweeted about it using the #bonjovimemories hashtag.

Macy Gray's New Song "B.O.B" Is About Her Vibrator

"He can go all night, dark until the light and we stop when I want to," Gray sings in the tune.Macy Gray AP Images

"He can go all night, dark until the light and we stop when I want to," Gray sings in the tune.

Macy Gray released an old-school sounding album last fall with Booker T. Jones of the legendary Stax band Booker T. and the MG's, but her newest track shows she's a very modern woman. The singer made famous for 1999's "I Try" is back with a new song, and the subject matter is very specific — her vibrator, of all things.

The love letter to her favorite little buddy is called "B.O.B" and was released with an adorable animated lyric video. As the song explains, Bob is not just her vibrator's name, but also an acronym: "B - is for battery, O - operated, B - is for better 'cuz he's not complicated."

Throughout it all, the cartoon vibrator dances across a bedroom, while Gray sweetly croons about the benefits of this sort of one-sided love affair. For example: "He can go all night, dark until the light and we stop when I want to / He's always the same, he never complains when I want another."

Music from this release

  • Watkins Family Hour: "Brokedown Palace" (via SoundCloud)
  • Watkins Family Hour: "Not in Nottingham" (via SoundCloud)

Most people think of "records" as discrete objects, collections of smaller pieces strung together into a whole. But rarely do we think of records as records: documents of specific places, times, people, ideas. Watkins Family Hour accurately falls under both of those definitions. It’s an eponymous album born out of the monthly residency hosted by siblings Sean and Sara Watkins at Los Angeles’ Largo for more than a decade. Now, with this record, those of us outside L.A. can finally get a peek at what they’ve been up to each month.

The Watkins were best known in the early 2000s for their band Nickel Creek, a progressively minded roots trio that took tradition and imbued it with new energy that earned them a Grammy and a large international following. The band’s frontman and mandolin player Chris Thile has gone on to earn more acclaim than his bandmates in the decade since they called it quits (save for a record and reunion tour last year), but the Watkins are no slouches: guitarist Sean remains a tremendously skilled flatpicker, while Sara’s songwriting and fiddling has always been sharp. They’ve both put these chops front and center on the solo records they’ve released over the years.

Watkins Family Hour, an 11-track LP comprised entirely of cover songs, feels like it could’ve been a live recording at any one of the group’s Largo conventions. They begin with Robert Earl Keen’s "Feelin’ Good Again", a mellow celebration of finding unexpected moments of joy. It’s an appropriate opening for a record that feels analogous to a live experience: it’s the obligatory "Hey, welcome everyone, we’re so happy to be here." From there, Watkins Family Hour arcs across toe-tapping numbers—some faster, some slower—before closing with the "fare thee well" reprises in the Grateful Dead’s "Brokedown Palace". All that’s missing is stage banter and some between-song tuning.

While the Watkins siblings lend their name to the marquee, the Watkins Family Hour has always operated under an open-ended definition of "family." Fiona Apple is perhaps the brightest star of the fold on the album, though she never eclipses her cohorts. It’s a pleasant surprise to hear Apple flex her vocal might in a genre outside her usual realm with "Where I Ought to Be", and her execution is immensely satisfying. Where Skeeter Davis leaned more toward self-pity on her original 1961 recording, Apple’s vocals streak the song with anger and hurt, breaking the record’s overall complacent tone. "Hop High", with Sara Watkins taking the vocal lead, injects the back half of the album with more intrigue as a cautious introduction yields to fiery fiddle licks.

Elsewhere, Watkins Family Hour hits a number of country and Americana sweet spots: there’s the plaintive ballad "She Thinks I Still Care", the mournful drinking tune "King of the Twelve Oz. Bottles". And while they also include a Roger Miller song, they made an unexpected choice from his catalog: "Not in Nottingham" is from Disney’s 1973 movie Robin Hood. Greg Leisz’s pedal steel buoys the record throughout—that instrument can help songs soar with a twangy breeziness or damn them to goofy "Hyuck, howdy-y’all!" hell. Similarly, Benmont Tench’s honky-tonk organ and piano contributions are welcome additions to the arrangements.

When bands we like cover songs we love, our best hope to relive those special moments is usually through sideways videos recorded on cell phones and uploaded to YouTube. But with this crystalline collection, Watkins Family Hour offers a more compelling insight.

RCA/Legacy Recordings Set To Release 40th Anniversary Edition Of Elvis Presley’s ‘Today’ on Friday, August 7, 2015

Jul 30, 2015

Elvis Today

Today (Legacy Edition) Includes Newly Expanded Version of the King’s Last Major Studio Album Featuring Rare Un-dubbed Session Mixes and Bonus Disc of Collectible Concert Performances Recorded in May-June 1975

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, and RCA Records will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s last major studio sessions with the release of a newly expanded definitive edition of Elvis Presley’s Today (Legacy Edition) on Friday, August 7, 2015.

The 40th Anniversary Today (Legacy Edition), the last studio album to be released during the King’s lifetime, contains the entire original album (first released on May 7, 1975) while premiering 10 un-dubbed mixes from the sessions, providing a new intimate listening experience. Now, for the first time on an official release, fans can hear Elvis’s pure unvarnished performances of these songs (recorded March 10-12, 1975), freed from the controversial “countrypolitan” overdubs on the original 1975 release and compare them to the more polished versions of the finished album. Today (Legacy Edition) is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Today (Legacy Edition) includes a bonus disc of rare and collectible concert performances recorded live during May and June 1975, the period immediately following the original release of the album.

Elvis Presley’s Today was recorded in RCA’s Studio C in Hollywood in March 10–12, 1975, and, though no one knew it at the time, it would be the last time Elvis would lay down tracks in a major recording studio. Studio C marked the spot where the King had recorded his Gold record smashes, “Burning Love” and “Separate Ways,” in 1972 and Elvis had handpicked a remarkable repertoire for this 1975 studio album return. Among the material chosen for the album, Elvis selected Don McLean’s “And I Love You So” and the Pointer Sisters’ “Fairytale,” songs he would perform in concert up until his passing in August 1977.

Today (Legacy Edition) opens with the album’s first single and Top 40 hit “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” an unadulterated full-on rocker, penned by Jerry Chesnut (who also wrote the album’s “Woman Without Love”), which signaled a return to raucous form for the King.

Rounding out the original Today were “Bringin’ It Back,” the album’s second single, and covers of songs recorded by Perry Como, Billy Swan (“I Can Help”), Faye Adams (“Shake A Hand”), the Statler Brothers, Charlie Rich and Tom Jones (“Green, Green Grass of Home”).

The 40th Anniversary Today (Legacy Edition) is the latest in a line of successful Legacy Edition reissues of key Elvis albums from the 1970s, among them On Stage, Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite and Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis—plus the special collections, Prince From Another Planet and Elvis At Stax.

The final mixing and overdubbing of the original Today, recorded with musicians outside of Elvis’ road-tested TCB Band, would become a point of contention between the artist and RCA. These sessions would turn out to be Elvis’ last in a traditional recording studio. The smattering of new recordings that would comprise his subsequent output over the following two years would take place either live in concert or in Elvis’ home studio at Graceland.

Originally released in 1975, Today was the last studio album from Elvis Presley. Now, in 2015, with the release of the 40th Anniversary Today (Legacy Edition), fans and collectors can experience the alternate “real” mix of the album, unadorned and true to the spirit of the artist.

Natalie Imbruglia covers Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas collaboration 'Instant Crush' - listen

The Aussie singer also takes on tracks by The Cure and Neil Young on new album

Luke Morgan Britton, 12th March 2015
Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia has taken on 'Instant Crush' by Daft Punk.
The original track featured on the French duo's album 'Random Access Memories', starring guest vocals from The Strokes' Julian Casablancas, but now Imbruglia has covered the song for her upcoming record.
The album is titled 'Male' and will see the singer covering tracks made famous by male-led acts. The tracklist will include the likes of The Cure, Neil Young, Iron & Wine, Damian Rice, Tom Petty, Death Cab For Cutie and Cat Stevens.
Speaking about her Daft Punk cover, Imbruglia said: "On the original version, you can’t really hear what the song is about because of the effect that Julian’s voice has, which I love, by the way. However, it is such a beautiful story that I want people to hear it and connect with the words. I’m really proud of the way it turned out."
'Male' will be released on July 28, following on from Imbruglia's 2009 album 'Come To Life'.

The 'Male' tracklist is:

'Instant Crush' (Daft Punk)
'Cannonball' (Damian Rice)
'The Summer' (Josh Pike)
'I’ll Follow You Into The Dark' (Death Cab For Cutie)
'Goodbye in His Eyes' (Zac Brown Band)
'Friday I’m in Love' (The Cure)
'Naked as We Came' (Iron & Wine)
'Let My Love Open the Door' (Pete Townshend)
'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' (Neil Young)
'I Melt With You' (Modern English)
'The Waiting' (Tom Petty)
'The Wind' (Cat Stevens)

eek So touching, dang.

grace weber sings in the shower

and brings all of the emotions

Grace Weber is one of those rare musicians whose voice transcends time. It’s loaded with history and deep introspection. Some might consider it wise. And perhaps it is. “Till I Hurt You,” one of the standout tracks from her album The Refinery, is lyrically rich and hangs in the air with a surrendering regret. Its swelling string arrangement by Eric Joseph Meyer and Weber’s powerful chords tell the tale of lost love perfectly—multiply those emotions tenfold when she performs it in the shower. To say we got chills filming this would be putting it lightly.

'Martin' star Tisha Campbell-Martin returns to her first love with the new single, "Steel Here." On the new offering, the singer/actress affirms her staying power, letting the world know she will "paint the sky."

"This is where it all began for me. I am a singer first and acting came later. Being an actress is what I do but music is who I am," Campbell-Martin says in a statement. "For many people, acting was my genesis but music is my exodus. I feel most comfortable behind the mic. That's where I feel most at home. As an artist, I want to affect people. I like to make people laugh, think, shed a tear, heal...This outlet is important to me because I can connect to people in a different way."

Campbell-Martin is best for her long-standing role in the hit TV comedies 'Martin' and 'My Wife & Kids' as well as many others.

Hear Prince's Funky New Party Popper 'Stare'

Singer surprise-releases song on Spotify weeks after removing catalog from service

By Kory Grow July 30, 2015
Prince Prince has released a funky new song that references "Kiss," titled "Stare" Chelsea Lauren/Getty

Prince lets loose in his new tune "Stare," a funky string of party-friendly, double-entendre come-ons and callbacks to his past. He sings about going onstage in his underwear and calls back his 1986 smash "Kiss" and its scratchy guitar line, interspersed with silly turns of phrase like "Second things first," all supporting his thesis, "we know you've got thirst." "Ain't nobody stoppin' 'cause we've got this party poppin'," he declares early, as he lets an elastic bass line connect the lyrics to bright horn fanfares and huffy, breathy vocals and a fake-out fadeout.

In typical Prince fashion, he surprise-released the song via Spotify. Earlier in the month, he had announced he was removing all of his music from the streaming service. "Prince's publisher has asked all streaming services to remove his catalog," a statement on the service read, according to Complex. "We have cooperated with the request, and hope to bring his music back as soon as possible." At the time, he left his catalog on Jay Z's high-def streaming service Tidal.

Spotify attributed the track to Prince, and not Prince with occasional backing group 3rdEyeGirl, which suggests he played most of the core instruments himself.

Although the singer put out two albums last year, he has been releasing non-album singles in 2015. In addition to "Stare," he recently put out the psychedelic 3rdEyeGirl collaboration "Hardrocklover" and his plea for peace "Baltimore."

He premiered the latter tune at a special "Rally 4 Peace" in Baltimore, held in the wake of riots protesting the death of Freddie Gray, a man who died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody. "The system is broken," Prince wrote in a statement that appears at the end of the video for the tune. "It's going to take the young people to fix it this time. We need new ideas, new life...."

Jack White and his TMR brand have now unveiled a postcard-shaped flexi-disc which can be found beneath the back cover of a 2 LP 12-inch version of the previously distributed Jay Z record, Magna Carta Holy Grail, and is said to play a “super secret hidden track.”

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is finding strong success as a solo artist

Aerosmith lead vocalist Steven Tyler has finally started to pursue a career as a country music artist. This decision has been a venture that Tyler has wanted to explore for many years, and so far the industry has been rather receptive.

The rock frontman released the official music video for his first country single “If Love Is Your Name” on July 3. Less than a month since the track was premiered on country music radio and ABC's Good Morning America, the video has amassed more than seven million views on VEVO alone.

The success doesn't end there; according to Neilsen Music, 73,000 digital copies of “If Love Is Your Name” have been purchased thus far. Additionally, the video has been streamed over 4.6 million times and the song has been streamed another 1.9 million.

Tyler fully embraced the country music lifestyle with “If Love Is Your Name” by heading to the famed Blackbird Studios in Nashville, where he recorded his hit single the first day. The song was written with the assistance of Lindsey Lee and Eric Paslay (Rascal Flatts, Sheryl Crow).

Paslay would later remark that he was thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside Tyler. “It’s pretty wild. It’s like, ‘Holy crap’! I’m still mind-blown,” he told KNCI 105.1. “If someone would have told me even five months ago ‘Hey, Steven Tyler’s gonna record one of your songs,' I’d have been like, ‘Yeah, whatever.'”

"The first day in the studio I recorded a song that became my first single, and if 'Love is Your Name' then Nashville's my new girlfriend,” Tyler shared in a press statement. “I guess you could call that Beginner's Luck."

“If Love Is Your Name” is the first single from Steven Tyler's first studio album as a solo artist, however the odds of the record being released before the end of the year is unlikely. This is largely due to the fact that Tyler is currently out on the road alongside the members of Aerosmith rounding out the remainder of the rock band's Blue Army tour.

"I've got to find time to come back and record these songs after the Aerosmith tour," Tyler told USA Today. "But I flit from flower to flower, country to country, looking for good times and singing about the last time. That's what I'm putting into the country songs."

Friday night, in the midst of his Lollapalooza headlining set, Paul McCartney brought out Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes for a rousing performance of “Get Back,” The Beatles’ classic late-career single. Given Howard’s fiery blues sensibilities, the feature was a perfect fit, and the duo harmonized with great success before Howard herself took the helm for the second verse. McCartney also performed portions of his Kanye West and Rihanna collaboration “FourFiveSeconds” while at Lolla. Watch video of both moments below.
