Stevie Wonder, Help please..! (Extended versions) "Hotter Than July" ("I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" Extended?)
Extended 12" Versions by Stevie Wonder:
From the brilliant "Hotter Than July" vinyl album - original from 1980...
Inside the lyrics - it reads some "additional lyrics", some "extra verses" from so-called 12 Inch Versions, but.. does these Maxi singles actually exist:
Help please,
Help especially to find (officially) wav (cd?) or on vinyl 12" Singles (?).....
"I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" - run time? (I can't find this amazing song in ext., I would love to hear the 12") "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me" - around 8:41 (this is on yt) "Master Blaster (Jammin')" - 6 minutes (Also on yt) "Happy Birthday" - 8 Minutes (on yt as well) "As If You Read My Mind" - run time? (can't find this)
^ ps.. I could not find info about these 12 inches on discogs.com??
IIRC, there's a Stevie set that's on iTunes & that has basically everything that he has recorded & remastered, including like 12" mixes, Pops We Love You with Marvin, Smokey & Diana, Remixes etc. and rare songs. It's called The Complete Stevie Wonder. I haven't got the set but would like to for the rare stuff.
^ ok this sounds great thetimefan.. this boxset is maybe expessive.. but I will look for the tracklist and I hope the extended versions from the "Hotter than ...." album will be included..
Thanks for your reply!
Edit -
I found the songs Happy Birthday (8 min.) and Did I Hear You Say You Love Me (8:42) both on iTunes, thanks..
I Ain't Gonna Stand For It (12" Extended) this I just can't find.. (only the 4:39 version is available, and a single alternate mix...)
I've seen very few extended mixes of his songs on CD or digital, only the ones that are on the iTunes Boxset, which I purchased years back. The 'At The Close Of The Century' Boxset has the alternate mixes of a few songs, which are essentially just the album cuts without the cross-fade. A few of his 70s/80s albums, each song end fades out as the next starts. It's great to hear the opening notes of All I Do without the song before it bleeding into the intro.
The Master Blaster (Jammin') extended cut is also on the iTunes set, and it's probably the best along with Did I Hear You Say You Love Me. Both have lots of extra vocals/ad-libs. [Edited 6/1/15 21:59pm]
^ Both thanks: what a pleasure to see some Stevie Wonder experts posting, thanks a lot for the replies...
Ps..
If I remember right I once saw a link on WikiPedia to an extended version of "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It", like I wrote it seems the additional lyrics for a 12 inch version is mentioned in the lyrics on the "Hotter Than July" sleeve.
I could remember this wrong though, maybe this extended version doesn't exist after all..
Could be a France only release though as there doesn't seem to be a listing for another 12" version in other countries. Also doesn't seem to be extended, running time is listed as 4:35, so could just be a 12" single release. Wiki says in the iTunes set
I Ain't Gonna Stand for It (Single Version) [Alternate Ending] - 4:37
So maybe only the single version, LP version and the alternate ending version exist. Looked under the remixes and it's not listed there, there are remixes to the songs you've got from Hotter than July. Unless the extended IAGSFI is from like a Motown compilation or could be in existentence but as yet unreleased.
Would Universal have had to go so far out of their way to include the extended versions on the various "Hotter Than July" CD reisssues that have been released over the years? Or at least include them as part of the digital download of the album.

I think the extended/remixes etc is more a 'collectors' thing which Funky Town Grooves, Hip O Select et al specialise in. But it would be easy for UMG to do that for sure. Plus it would actually give Stevie fans a reason to get the latest re-issue too instead of repackaging something they already own.

There used to be a soul station on AM that played this sometimes. I haven't heard it since the 1980s. It may have been a DJ promo, which sometimes have mixes not commercially released. I remember the radio would play a longer version of She's Got Papers On Me by Richard "Dimples" Fields, in which the Betty Wright speech at the end went on a minute or 2 longer than the version on the album and maxi single (which were identical). There's also a longer version of Junior's Too Late that I taped off the radio, but it's not on the maxi or any compilation that I've seen. The tape broke and I don't have it anymore though.
"Did I Hear You Say You Love Me" - around 8:41 (this is on yt)
I have this. It's on Don't Drive Drunk maxi single.

Did I Hear You Say You Love Me (Ext), Happy Birthday (Ext),
But I gues they are all unreleased on Cd/ Wav?
that may be what you mean.. Jjam..?
MickyD, thanks, I hope to find such a promo - or whatever it may be - one day.. of "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" (Extended)...
That song is so wonder-ful....
I used to see the promos all the time in some record stores and have bought some. The promo records usually had a different colored label than the offical releases (mostly white). I didn't see them much when CDs took over. They also used to sell these fake interview records, in which a performer pre-recorded answers to a question sheet inclosed for radio DJs. I guess when the radio station were finished with them, they'd take them to the used record stores.
.
As I mentioned, the long version of Did I Hear was officially released, but not at the time the album was out, but a few years later on the Don't Drive Drunk 12". I don't know about Happy Birthday. I know there's a dub version of Master Blaster that was released and I have it on a 45, but it's mostly instrumantal, as dubs usually are.

It seems the extended Master Blaster was a promo. Now that I've listened to it, I've heard it once or twice on the radio.

I wish I had a promo like that in Mint then I would record to wav...
Maybe you can find it at a place that sells used records

Thanks for starting this thread! I had no idea these extended mixes were in that giant iTunes collection. I need to learn more about what other rarities are in it.

On board-topic, Prince did a remix of Cold Chill that I didn't even know existed until this collection. There's also radio promos, TV appearances, etc. It may be the best $200 I've ever spent.
