The reason Janet won the role of Penny on "Good Times"(my all time favorite black sitcom, that I know all the behind the scenes activity on) is because Janet, flawlessly acted out an audition scene, in front of sitcom creator Norman Lear. She cried on cue,on the spot. Norman was so impressed that he gave it to her immediately.Janet was a child prodigy just like her brother. She also is very good at mimicking other people.

The fact that Janet was the only other sibling to attain worldwide superstardom is proof of her talent. Whatever it is that you have to add to the conversation is null and void due to your startlingly obvious bitterness. And you don't know what she could have and would have obtained as far as a recording contract goes. If you do, then tell me where you got that crystal ball. And now, you're dismissed.

She did ok. Ill give her that. Still not the powerhouse vocalist I remember her being, that a friend of mine was so in awe of. I still need to see her sing "Emotions" my favorite song by her. Then I can REALLY tell. It's still very sad to watch her go through this. Like said she had to have made Sony a billion dollar.

I am a huge Janet fan! And even I know this guy is a gotdamn troll for saying Mariah sings no better than Janet! He is on so other shit! Mariah and Whitney are know for their voices. Janet can't compete with them when it comes to that. Just like they can't compete with her when it comes to performing. I've never been much of a Mariah fan I've always preferred Whitney. But I've always respect her talent. There has always been something about Janet that attracted me to her more so than any other artist. I can't explain it she just does it for me!

Very mature response. Don't get me wrong, I'm not like a lot of these other posters that say Janet can't even carry a tune, because even I know that isn't true. Like I said, the girl isn't a powerhouse, but she's a decent singer; her distinctive tone and her ability to sound eerily like Michael at times doesn't hurt, either

She's a great singer (at least in the studio) if she sticks to her strengths. As others have stated, not a powerhouse vocalist, but perfectly good in her zone. Her albums all sound great.

I'm going to see her live for the first time during the upcoming tour. I'd have to imagine that back in the day she did a lot of lip-syching with all of those crazy dance routines, and probably sang some slower songs live? Correct? But, that would be perfectly fine, as I would want to see her dance and put on her full show.

Lipsynced or not, the singing in that clip sounds decent only because of the other vocalists singing all kinds of harmonies to hide her non-existent range. What is it, half an octave?

I've liked many of her songs and she's had some nice videos, but let's just stop kidding ourselves that this woman should have had any sort of a career as a singer.
