FUNKADELIC Shaking the Gate Throughout 2015!

Been a few months since any site mention of the amazing Funkadelic 3-CD set First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate. I have listened to it daily since December and still not close to saturation. It is so ambitious, adventurous and of course funky that it blows my mind and rocks my soul. I have even warmed up to the somewhat grating title track. Love the vocals, arrangements, keyboards and guitars throughout. Reviews continue to trickle in around the Web as P-Funk tears up stages during its current tour. I even noticed recent Youtube posts of them performing the new material. Especially love me some Pole Power, Baby Like Fonkin It Up, Radio Friendly, Roller Rink, Jolene, Meow Meow, Catchin' Boogie Fever, Talking to the Wall, Where Would I Go?, Yesterdejavu, Ain't That Funkin Kind of Hard on You and Snot N' Booger.

C'mon, bring the FONK - who is still flying high on the Mothership?!

I'm still ridin'. I started not to buy it because of the reviews I read here on the org, but I'm glad I did. There's (of course) the hip-hop elements, but there's so much more. Hearing it during the holiday season reminded me of the P-Funk records I used to get as a kid for Xmas..("Uncle Jam", "Motor Booty", "One Nation")..."Boom" is Bernie synthfunk straight out of 1980 (vault outtake?)..."Yellow Light"proves Sly can still funk hard.."Talking" is gospel blues.."Meow Meow" is my favorite...Bootsy's bass brings that nasty funk to life.."Creases"is the same...."Yesterdayjavu" reminds me of Cream.."Dirty Queen" brings the gothic street metal..."In Da Kar" has a nice blunted mellow dub vibe.."Fucked Up" is lounge stoner jazz..This whole CD is great..One song even sampled Funkadelic's "Stuff N Thangs"bassline....I even enjoyed the hip hop on STG..Can't wait til the Parliament CD comes out.

but now I've read your guys rave reviews above and no need to check myself anymore. CD order placed 5 minutes ago, and thanks to Amzon AutoRip it's already on my iPhone. well, sometimes you gotta love the new technologies

I gave the CD set a cursory lesson on Spotify at the time of release, but I found it a bit much to take in back then, might give it another chance now that you guys have brought it up again. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get to any of the recent gigs in the UK, so I dunno when or if I'll get a chance to see them. My dad and I had booked tickets to see them in Paris a few years ago, but we fucked up the date and went on the day after they were performing, I was gutted sad

omg, that sucks!!

when I saw them in Vienna some 25 years ago, I assume THEY fucked up the date... all the audience was there, but they didn't show up... at least for many, many, many hours.... seriously, I never had to wait so long in any concert ever

i went 2 weeks ago while he was in the uk and of the 3 hour set, the hour devoted to Shake The Gate was apallling compared to the old stuff, i listened to the new album and i'm not really digging it, a third of it is ok. This is from his appearance on Jools Holland

Dancelot you'll be glad you copped it. I went into it not expecting 1977, but I was pleased with the results. It does remind me of a modern day version of "Electric Spanking"..(because of the variety).

I brought i yesterday, and did a quick skip listen. It sounds a lot better than i expected. They should have edited it down to maybe 15 tracks, though.

Either way, it good that they pretty much stayed true to the Funkadelic sound. If the album is somewhat successful, maybe it will help other older bands realize that there is a market for bands who basically stay true to their original sound, and who don't go out of their way to sound current. I think that for some of us older people, we look at some current music trends as being done to death, and see older trends as sounding new, and refreshing. Its exactly like with clothes. Enough time has past to where a lot of old styles(skinny jeans*, vans, etc) have come back in fashion. Its the same way with music.

Anyway i guess the trick(for the older bands) is to not get so stuck in past glories, that they loose all creativity, and sound repetitive. That would be like Cameo coming out with a new album, and have the first single sound like Single Life/Word Up/ Candy. Now(imo), that would probably be doing it wrong.

And in my mind, the last, The Time(Original7ven), album, was a pretty good example of doing it right. It had a somewhat modern sound, but it still sounded like The Time. I would have been Ok with it sounding totally retro, The Time, though.

*Them things are friggin ugly! Even back in the 80's, i never liked skinny jeans!

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

I put off buying it when it first came out but found the whole set for 4.99 320kbp download so I got it, and am I glad I did.

I pretty much love it all. It's a whole to take in and I thought I would cut it down but there really isn't anything I would want to lose.

I'm not quite at that stage yet, I still could edit a song here and there, but a few more listens more who knows.... anyway, so far I really, really enjoy it, didn't expect that at all when it was first released

I felt the same way and think a lot of folks did, even those of us who are longtime faithful. Early on about half the album seems too out there, or too much rap, or too electronic, songs are too long, or too unlike classic Funkadelic, but over time it all begins to come into focus and click as a tour de force masterwork of epic proportions. It is like that with a lot of great art, it takes time to decipher and absorb. Now I am so thankful for all 33 cuts, love most of them and at least appreciate the others on some level. On top of that it is all so unexpected after so much time, the loss of so many key P-Funk stars and George's age. What a funky blessing.

If you've got funk, you've got style.
