Woah! New Prodigy album? Fuck, how did I miss this?

So whats it like? Classic Prodigy or a new direction? I thought they were recycling a lot of ideas on the last 2 albums but Invaders Must Die was the stronger of the two. Not a patch on Fat of the Land or Jilted though.

I was a tiny bit disappointed after the first listen - but that's just about being a big fan waiting years for a new album expecting every track to be a killer - same with Prince. However after a second listen I was sold. It's certainly a fierce album, probably their fiercest - borne out to slay all the nancy EDM clogging up the dance scene. Does it sound similar to their other albums? Well, it's distinctly Prodigy and you can hear elements from their back catalogue in there (isn't that true for most artists?) but this album stands on it's own two feet.

.

For me there's 4 standout tracks, the monster that is the opening title track - instant classic - and if I was voted into 10 Downing Street, this would have to be listened to loud on headphones by all my citizens. Frighteningly good. "Destroy" is an unashamed high-five to the early 90s British Rave scene, beefed up with the Prodigy 2015 mega-engine. "Rok-weiller", has the maddest riff welded to the fattest robo-sonic breakbeat, guaranteed to blow the roof when performed live. "Medicine" - is pure jumped-up ragamuffin. The two downtempo tunes, much needed to take a breather amongst the mayhem, are very good too - "Beyond the Deathray" and "Invisible Sun" - the latter a nod to those peerless John Carpenter soundtracks. For me, the rest of the album doesn't have any weak tracks (apart from the lyrics to "Nasty" perhaps) it's all pretty good. Rave, rock, ragga, Public Enemy - it's all in there.

.

If I was to try and describe the sound of this album - it's like visiting a breakers-yard at night where everything's come to life to bash the shit out of each other. Nobody does the 'drop' or breakbeats like The Prodigy. They're still live'n'kicking - an essential part of today's dance tapestry - probably near the toilets and exit door.
