Did he mean industry politics, cause Black Messiah is very political.

I took it as he was talking about industry politics. It appears to me he definitely just enjoys performing but doesn't want to be a superstar

I would think with being a superstar it would come with a lot of pressure to release music that you really don't like just to satisfy or get a quick hit and pretty much abandon your artistic integrity. Some people just don't crave the limelight. I'm sure he's probably not broke and lives quite comfortably. More comfortable than if he would've stayed in Richmond VA, and worked a 9-5 and saved every check for the last 20yrs.

D'angelo @ Club Nokia last night in beautiful Downtown LA

[img:$uid]http://i59.tinypic.com/2ednq89.jpg[/img:$uid]

D'angelo was INCREDIBLE last night. He looked so happy!

[img:$uid]http://i58.tinypic.com/14wwad.jpg[/img:$uid]

Jesse stayed VERY low key. He didn't try to steal D'angelo's shine

D'angelo's gear was on point!!! It was a good idea to start him overseas first. D's set is very well rehearsed for a U.S tour! He also was VERY comfortable in front of his fans. Flirting constantly with a few adoring women around me.

He has learned well from his musical hero prince. With a very charismatic, James Brown inspired per4mance. Like prince did with the Parade tour with "The Revolution".Also reminiscent of prince's "Baby I'm A Star", "It's Gonna B a Beautiful Night", James Brown workouts on the "Purple Rain & SOTT tours with his adding a horn section to" The Vanguards".He has taken all those elements and made them his own in his show.. It's like watching prince & The Revolution with Jerome,Wally etc added in.

D'angelo's rhythm guitarist Isaiah Sharkey was SLAYING IT!! I was very impressed with how Jesse took a lowkey, backseat to him. It shows how really humble he is. Jesse is a CLASS ACT!

[img:$uid]http://i60.tinypic.com/2eezkav.jpg[/img:$uid]

I still would have rather seen prince's drummer John Blackwell on the sticks. Too bad they fell out. I was not impressed with this current drummer at all. His solo was not impressive.

Why is John Blackwell no longer playing with D´Angelo?

I´d love to hear the new guitarist but I think Jesse and D´Angelo have great chemistry. Hope he won´t change this band too much, I also liked those two male background singers and Kendra didn´t bother me at all.

I'm seeing him on June 25th here in DC. I can't wait! The Voodoo tour was one of the best shows I've ever seen (even with the little disruption when Larry Graham stood up and left the show!). My wife has never seen D'Angelo live. Best of all, this will be our first outing since our daughter was born. It's gonna be a beautiful night! lol

It's been 15 years, so my memory could be bad. But I recall seeing Larry, his wife, and possibly 1-2 other people getting up and leaving (they had nice seats too!) when D played Shit, Damn, Motherfucker. Can anyone else who attended the Voodoo show at the Orpheum theater in 2000 verify this?

Also, I faintly heard D and Questlove jamming with Prince at Paisley the night before D's concert. You could barely hear it through the soundstage walls, but I knew it was the closest I would ever get to hearing those great musicians play together.

Larry actually did the same thing to prince @ one of his shows. Before Larry converted prince to The JW's.

That would be a dream combo to witness @ Paisley Park! biggrin

I know! I'm very excited. I only wish I could also see Prince play here on Sunday. Too late to find a babysitter. Well, and we'd fall asleep within 10 minutes because we're still in the hell phase of having a newborn. smile

Going to a D concert is just as close as going 2 c prince as U can get. He has prince's WHOLE aura going, down to the costumes he wears that are modeled after prince's. Paying homage to him in starting his tour on prince's B-day, then naming his tour "The Second Coming" is a fan paying homage to his musical idol....

eek Wow, never heard of that incident before. What happened? Why didn´t D want him back? Was it because of having too many former Prince associates in his camp?

I like the new drummer, too. I mean, I really dig John Blackwell but the new drummer isn´t bad either. And I loved those spiral looking cymbal things that he used when they played here.

John is VERY salty over the incident...D has moved on now & hasn't looked back. The spiral cymbals look creepy & demonic to me. disbelief

D, I'm VERY proud of him of what he overcame to make a come back. The show was MORE than I expected! Although I've seen him everytime he has come here. He hasn't missed a beat! His voice is still incredible.

I bet it's very rewarding for him to FINALLY be appreciated for his artistry now. It almost brought tears to my eyes to see his happiness. Although he didn't talk much he oozed charisma & swag.

Plus it's rewarding for me to see an artist use his prince influence so well.

Also, demonic spiral cymbals? seriously... ? smh...

RE: John Blackwell: He had a trial spot in the band. He might have gone along for the first leg of the tour, but D didn't feel he'd have enough time to prepare sufficiently. See: This interview (~at 01:45:10)
