Record Day Sales, 12 Year High... For all the belly-aching about music losing its "value" or not being respected as an art form; many folks are still buying music. Maybe some people aren't buying the shit music conglomerates are producing.
Record Store Day 2015 was once again a triumph, according to merchants who participated in the event and data supplied by Nielsen Music. For the week ended April 19 -- Record Store Day was held on April 18 -- the independent sector counted for 532,000 album scans, or 21.5 percent of total physical album sales, and 11.9 percent of overall sales. In both instances, it represented the highest weekly sales percentages total for the indie sector since 2003, according to Nielsen Entertainment senior vp Dave Bakula. That total also represented a 46.7% increase over the 363,000 album units scanned by the indie sector the week prior. Bakula also reports that for stores open more than a year, that reported both this year and last to Nielsen, same-store album sales increased 3 percent. However, overall album sales in the indie sector fell 12 percent this year versus the week of Record Store Day last year.... (link high-lighted in purple)

THE NO BRAINER would be market music and all those promo dollars or at least some to THIS kind of music. I went to this years Record Store Day in NYC and it was non stop sales of everything, classic vinyl that was cut price to new stuff released just for that day. Also thank DAVE GROHL for being the ambassador to this, making video speeches, and little spots about how he took to vinyl as a kid, what he bought, support your local shop the importance, and also releasing a bsides record that day and playing an instore. Shit PRINCE where you at on this??? Come on man, stop preaching on the soul train awards and grammy awards about "real music" shit no one is listening to you man, talk is cheap. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I agree l.d. There soooo many other things vying for the atttention and money of consumers these days; music doesn't have the built-in marketing advantages it once held.
Now that I'm retired I have the pleasure of listening to and discovering new music. There's a lot of good stuff being made; randomly listening to Bandcamp, SounCloud, & YouTube.
I suspect record companies... independent or otherwise would still prefer to inslave artist to their contracts... hence "real music" that they can't control isn't by design isnt being marketed. But hopefully as things change, the different ways in which people discover and purchase music won't be controlled by traditional forces.

I think this is such Bullshit!
In my day everyday was Record Store Day! We celebrated the music unconditionally, not because there was hype. Music feeds the soul and should not be disposable like it is now. * I hate what it's turned into. * Carry on. * [Edited 4/26/15 7:44am]

Well you know Panasonic made them way back in the day..
Did you checkout the amp in their store? $50 So a turntabel plus speakers maybe add a "DAC", under $500.00 you could have a damn good audio setup.
