Replace an overplayed radio song with another BY SAME ARTIST This could be an old school station, or today's hits. But lord knows this year's playlist is the same as last year's, and if these radio station insist on playing certain artists, they could at least try a different single. I'm sorry but you must stick with the same artist for this exercise

Tears For Fears: Everybody Wants To Rule The World → Advice For The Young At Heart The Monkees: I'm A Believer → Salesman The Time: Jungle Love → Wild And Loose The Spinners: I'll Be Around → I Don't Want To Lose You The O'Jays: Give The People What They Want → My Favorite Girl Color Me Badd: I Wanna Sex You Up → Slow Motion Wilson Phillips: Hold On → Impulsive Gap Band: Outstanding → Party Lights Minnie Riperon: Memory Lane → Stick Together You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Why would you want to ruin another song by an artist you love? I'm glad I don't hear Anotherloverholenyohead played on constant rotation on VH1 and Radio 2, as it means I still enjoy it when I hear it. Raspberry Beret on the other hand? Ugh.

In my area,we have an Old School R&B station and it seems like they play the exact same songs over and over! It's really annoying. They forget that these artists are known for many great songs, not just the two or three that they insist on playing all the time.
Voting off: "Brick House" by The Commodores Replacing it with: "Slippery When Wet"
Voting off: "Super Freak" by Rick James Replacing it with: "69 Times"
Voting off: "Raspberry Beret" by Prince Replacing it with: "Let's Work"

Are you certain these replacement single nominees were all singles?

I'm not saying go back in time and change everything. I just mean maybe for 2015 they could switch it up to another great previous single.

They all were played on the radio where I live. Back then they would play songs that were not actual singles like Good Times by The Jacksons, Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder, & The Lady In My Life by Michael Jackson. AOR stations would play album tracks too. Wild & Loose was played a lot on the local R&B stations, and it was slightly different. Morris shouting "What Time Is It?" came in the middle of the song instead of the beginning like on the album. I used to have it on a tape I recorded from the radio but it broke. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Phil Collins- "In the air tonight" "Groovy kind of love" replace with "Everyday" "I missed again"
Michael Jackson- "Don't stop 'till you get enough" "Billy Jean" "Beat it" "Rock with you" replace with "Black or white" "Remember the time" "Jam" "Stranger in Moscow"
Shalamar "Night to remember" replace with "Dead giveaway"
Peabo Bryson "Tonight, I celebrate my Love" replace with "By the time the night is over"
Def Leppard "Animal" replace with "Let's get rocked"
Earth Wind and Fire- "September" "After the love is gone" replace with "Magnetic" "System of survival"
Ok, the last one, in the UK at least, will never happen LOL as both the replacements charted so ridiculously low in the UK, but the others arn't that unreasonable, with Peabo's maybe being a stretch as that charted too low really to be reinstated into mainstream radio which is a shame as I bloody hate "Celebrate my love" LOL.

Crazy! Classic/Old-School R&B has to be the most predictable format on radio. Here in Detroit, it's the same artists/song in constant rotation every few hours. Kem and Charlie Wilson every hour! I miss the days when DJ's weren't forced to stick to a playlist. We used to have a radio station, WGPR, where the DJ's played album cuts that were never singles. Unfortunately, they are no longer operating because of ratings. I guess the public wants to here the same stuff over and over again. I wouldn't care if I never heard "Brick House" or "Super Freak" ever again! "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

To me, is it really an old school "R&B" station if they only play the main hit that went POP? You know what I mean?

The one where I live plays a lot of Maze & Charlie Wilson and Jaheim as far as newer acts go. Going by this station you'd think Jaheim is as popular as Michael Jackson. They also like playing this song called After The Party by Koffee Brown and Heard It All Before by Sunshine Anderson. I don't know how many times I've heard those 2 songs. Sometimes they play stuff like Mel Waiters and zydeco. There's also a soul oldies station on AM, which has more variety. They occasionally play a newer act like Beyonce, but they'll play Bettye Lavette, Tyrone Davis, Bobby Bland, Steely Dan, Jackie Wilson, Joe Simon, etc. plus blues singers. They'll even play James Taylor (not the one from Kool & The Gang, but the soft rock singer). They also play zydeco most of the afternoon on Tuesday. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

One thing I've noticed is,they play only the Prince hits that were big on the pop charts...."Little Red Corvette","Take Me With U","Raspberry Beret","Purple Rain",etc.
Yet they ignore his funkier stuff like "Soft And Wet","Let's Work",etc.....the stuff that was only popular with R&B/funk fans.
Kinda strange,if you ask me.

These are GREAT suggestions, and I feel like they aren't even too far out from the mainstream? Like, could be adopted by radio programmer.

"All That I Can Say" is Lauryn Hill's best song but it seems like the main song that gets radio play is all relative to an individual artist's success. "Real Love" is great though. I would just like to hear more Mary on the radio in general.

I guess when you are programming a station for a potential audience of a million in a city, it makes sense to always go for the #1 hit, because even on this thread I am not feeling a total consensus.
HELL YES!

The only time I hear Thriller on the radio is around Halloween and on Party City commercials sung by someone else.
