Cover songs that are more popular than the originals

These cover songs surpass the originals in terms of popularity and or commercial success, and in some cases people would later associate those songs with the artists who did the cover, instead of the original artists.

Man, I didn't know "No More I Love Yous" was a cover.

"One" by Three Dog Night was more popular than Harry Nilsson's.

Chaka Kahn's "I Feel 4 U" was more popular than Prince's.

Sinead's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was more popular than The Family's.

That's all I can think of right now.

"She made me glad to be a man"

More "popular" doesn't neccesarily mean "better". Sometimes I prefer the originals and sometimes I'm in favor of the covers. Example, I'd pick Paul Revere's original version of Steppin' Stone over The Monkees'. OTOH, I must admit that if Jeff didn't cover Hallelujah, that song would've been just another obscure Cohen tune. Annie Lennox's version of No More I Love You's is also way more refined compared to the original.

Of course, RHCP can't touch Stevie's original version, but unfortunately their version is way more popular, that's just the way it is.

I read the thread title. I don't agree that the covers are more popular. How many times I've seen Stevie's HG used in tv and film plus the countless televised performances. I've never heard the RHCP's version.

UB40 didn't even know it was a Neil Diamond song, apparently! They knew it from a previous reggae cover version by Tony Tribe.

I disagree! I prefer the original. But you're right that Stewarts version was a bigger hit.

Kim Carnes recorded two cover versions that did considerably better than the original versions. Her version of More Love was a top 10 hit single on Billboard Hot 100 Singles in 1980. The original by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles which peaked at #23 was recorded in 1967. Carnes scored another top 10 hit with her cover of Bette Davis Eyes in 1981 which spent 9 weeks at the top spot. It was originally recorded and co-written by Jackie DeShannon in 1974.

Hell, half of Whitney's early hits were covers. Never knew better until I got older.

I thought that "Stop Me" melody sounded familiar.
