Well, we are FORTY years out from Stevie Wonder's most influential songs, so any current singer's entire lifetime has been shaped by Stevie in some way, and may even be shaped by later singers a lot like him stylistically (Aaron Hall, Charlie Wilson).

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Of course almost every singer/musician for the past 40 years has been influenced by Stevie in one way or another, but not everyone can pull off a Stevie song, that's a timeless fact, and this guy did it so well. It's also a fact that you don't hear a white man sings a Stevie song perfectly that often, and you will still be surprised when that happens.
I don't think people are still surprised to see white hip hop artists, because there's so many. But yes it's still surprising to see a white hip hop artist that's good because few are noteworthty, facts of life. The Beasties, Eminem, Action Bronson, Jonwayne, etc they represent the good ones, but mostly are just whack or mediocre, at best. Again, another facts of life
Soul, funk, rap, they're black music, don't tell me otherwise. Yeah, soul is color blind and all that shit, but you can't deny that people stil jump of their seat when they see a white man does black music so good, the same way when you see a black man pulls off a Sinatra song.

They're not bad, but they're not cut out to sing a Stevie song.
