I agree with this but I also think Janet has partial fault in that as well. There is a lot she can do to up keep her legacy by re-releasing past albums, special editions, behind the scene footages etc. She doesn't put emphasis on her back catalog which could really expose the new generation to her music. She doesn't ever have to release a new album but she should at least invest in her classics....she doesn't and that is hurting her legacy imo.

i think for awhile it hurt her but it seems like these days young artists are really appreciating her. im surprised at how much i see her mentioned on social media, especially since she hardly ever participates.the media downplays her career but i dont see that with the industry, her music is being sampled and covered more now that i've ever seen .

This. Janet's music is consistently sampled by young pop, R&B and Hip-Hop artists, and they're always giving her credit for being their inspiration, now more than ever it seems. You can really see the Janet appreciation now that social media is the norm. Every other day, some celeb is Tweeting about her or doing an interview where they mention her as one of their main inspirations. And she doesn't have to degrade herself on social media or onstage to garner the respect.

So true and one of the biggest falls in music history.

She would have trouble giving away a new album.

Are you serious? With the way her fanbase (which is huge, mind you) and various celebs Tweet, Instagram, Facebook and generally champ at the bit while waiting for a new album from her? lol You tried it, though. A new Janet album, which has been 7 years in the making, would certainly fair better than Madonna's latest flop, that's for sure. Also, Janet didn't "fall". She was blacklisted, for sure, but that didn't stop her from touring, writing a successful book, putting out several more high-charting albums, making movies, winning awards, and inspiring all these chicks you see occupying the Hot 100 these days.

She had to tour small venues after poor Rock Witchu ticket sales. While I think most of the fans who bought Discipline still like her (they were after all fans at least 7 years earlier when she was still having hit singles), I'm not convinced that many of them still spend money on music or that it wouldn't debut low top ten and then drop rapidly.

Yes this is true.... but I am not talking about within the music industry. I am talking about a generation of music listeners. The current generation of music listeners are not that expose to her music, music videos etc.

Why should she do this? It's not like her records are out of print or can only be bought as an import from Japan. Janet's albums can be easily found and she doesn't block videos like Prince. Young people in general have never been interested in their parents or grandparents music. In the 1980s, the average teen & young adult was not checking for Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong records. The MP3 generation is not interested in remasters. Remastered CDs only really makes a difference if a person has a good home stereo system, not an Ipod or cheap computer speakers. Many remasters are just louder. The average person is not interested in deluxe albums & box sets. A person would also have to buy it and not just download it for free.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Regardless. That was a few years ago, and most of those shows were so successful that she not only had to triple-book nights, but she also had to extend the tour for a much longer period than it had initially been planned. The tour was a direct response to her highly successful Essence Festival headlining appearance (she drew more people than Beyonce), and her well-received AMERICAN IDOL apperance, an appearance that shot straight to #1 on iTunes. The UCAP tour did quite well for a show with no new material and no grand theatrics. There's no way in Hades that with the way her fanbase is hungry for new material from her that a new Janet album would debut in the low top tens.

i don´t get it, why would RN1814 now be diamond? I think it sold about 6 million in the US at the time of release, are they saying it sold another 4 million till today?

Okay, I'll explain.

RIAA certifies shipments, not sale.

When it comes to sale, SoundScan doesn't count BMG Club sales, howser RIAA counts that sales too.

As of December 2009, Rhythm Nation has sold 8,500,000 copies in the U.S. according to RIAA and Nielsen SoundScan. Combined, it has sold over 9,600,000 copies in the U.S. with additional 1,100,000 copies sold at BMG Music Clubs.

In 1991 Janet signed for Virgin, and her old record compnay stopped certifing her albums, but Rhythm Nation and Control continued to sell well. For instance, even Control sold almost 500,000 according to SoundScan and additional 883,000 in BMG Music Club after 1991.

So we have crazy situation in which albums by some other artists that sold 7 million are Diamond or even 11x Platinum, and Janet's album that sold more than 9 million are 6x PLatinum. RIAA literally confirmed this Janet's number on Twitter, stating, that they can't certify them without intrest of her record company. That's it.

And that tour in small venues -with show long 90 minutes having Janet on cheap stage only about 60 minutes- grossed more than all Kanye West tours together, and as much as Britney's Femme Fatale Tour from the same year or Gaga's ArtRave tour - with the same number of shows, because people were ready to pay much more for legendray Janet. She also sold 16,000 tickets for London shows within 10 minutes - that's equal to O2 Dome. And all that without big promotion, new album nor hit. Just random tour. The tour proved her star power, not opposite.

@Madonna lol

On a serious note, I've always felt some Prince fans try their best to bring down the man's achievements/sales/popularity and make him out to be a minor figure in music.... until I saw Janet Jackson threads. It's a whole new level

You don't make one appearance in this thread until today, and of all the other things you could've mentioned, you single that out? lol Madonna isn't the only artist these days to embarrass herself onstate OR on social media. Or did my statement hit too close to home?

No one is singling Madonna out, but since she is an artist who is in Janet's generation, it's easier making that comparison instead of comparing Janet to one of the younger girls. And that SB incident is just so polarizing that bringing it up about a woman who became a superstar while covered up-to-here in all black is pointless.

She surely didn't. If this had happened nowadays, she would have been applauded, accident or not. Suffice it to say, the SB incident was the catalyst for the beginning of Youtube. That alone makes Janet an icon lol

People are actually waiting for new Janet.

I think we might have one of those Justin Timberlake type comebacks on our hands.

Was Timberlake's comeback really anything noteworthy though?

He dropped "Suit and Tie", people got a little hype, dropped 20/20 Part 1, had a quick hit with Jay in "Holy Grail", was handed the MJ Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs, dropped 20/20 Part 2, and almost completely vanished from the music scene outside of "Not a Bad Thing" which was hit but quietly and unceremoniously slid off the charts.

Not to say JT's comeback wasn't successful but it was pretty weak given his promotion.
