Jeffrey was in Paul McCartney's 1984 movie Give My Regards To Broad Street. You might recognize something at 3:40-4:00 in this video. razz

Here's a Micki Free interview from 2014. Interstingly he says Gene Simmons talked him into joining Shalamar.

The drama continues...

I just read something on Facebook from singer Carrie Lucas, who was married to Solar founder Dick Griffey. She implies that the Griffey estate owns the Shalamar name and that they're gonna challenge Jody for ownership of it eek

She says that Dick Griffey has owned the Shalamar name since 1977 and that a legal challenge has already been filed.Dick's daughter is a member of Howard Hewiit and Jeffrey Daniel's version of Shslamar.

If Griffey owns it, how did Jody get awarded with it? Maybe the estate did not renew.

Interesting question. The whole situation is a mess.A similar thing happened with Klymaxx and the judge ruled that any of the original members can use the name.

I think Otis Williams owns The Temptations name, but Dennis Edwards' version is called Temptations Review

It's hard to read that article, but I think this is what the last few paragraphs state:

There is no moral credit or right to recent filings of Jody's "ownership" of Shalamar, already purchased and administered by Dick Griffey since 1977.A legal challenge to that process is filed and registered. In defense of what my late husband fought long and hard to accomplish, our family will press forward for the return of our rightful legacy.

The following is from Carrie Lucas Griffey: Shalamar as a group, began with the late, great, Don Cornelius and my husband, the late, great, Dick Griffey. They both purchased the name Shalamar in mid 1970's with their newly formed label "Soul Train Records". The very first Shalamar song, "Uptown Festival", was performed by a group of studio musicians. The late, Gary Mumford and other session singers. It's producer asked Dick if he would like to use the session song. Don and Dick purchased rights and ownership of Shalamar. "Shalamar" was a song, there was no group.
My husband was one of the premier Black promoters and booked the "Fabulous Forum" and like venues across the U.S. with such super stars like Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, O' Jays, Al Green, others and a young mega-talented group, "The Jackson 5", at the "Cow Palace" in San Francisco.
Dick an entrepreneur, became friends with Don and coordinated talent for his "Soul Train" show. After purchasing rights to the "Shalamar" name, they needed a "face" and "group" to perform their purchased hit. Don and Dick placed two young, talented "Soul Train" dancers and paired them with original session singer, Gary Mumford. Shalamar became an official group. However, Don's main focus was his show and he wanted out of their "Soul Train Record" partnership.
Dick bought Don's interest in "Soul Train Records" and "Shalamar". In 1977, Dick signed Shalamar to the new label he founded, "SOLAR Records".
Album covers and artist's likeness, as members of "Shalamar", are not personal pictures. Photo sessions were arranged and paid for by
SOLAR, under recording contracts, fulfilling group obligations. Professional images belonged to SOLAR Records. Contracts willingly entered, signed and paid for, does not entitle ownership.
An original member, selected and put in "Shalamar", quit the group in1983 for a successful solo career . Never performing as a regular member of "Shalamar", for 30 years. After 30 years, an undetected 2013 filing process now challenged, allowed claim of "ownership", of the very group
and label that launched their solo career.
Everyone worked hard for the success of "Shalamar", and every former member has the right to work as former members. But no one worked harder than Dick, and no one has the right to profess ownership of something Dick created, sacrificed for and poured our money into.
In 1984, Dick spearheaded a nationwide talent search to replace the female member of "Shalamar". A new female lead was placed in the group,
and "Shalamar", received their biggest pop hit in 1984 and a Grammy Award with the new lineup.
"Shalamar", continued recording and performing. Mr. Griffey adding all consecutive members. Eventually, some SOLAR music catalog was sold. No groups were sold. Over the last 35 years, Dick never forfeited his ownership of "Shalamar", and monitored it's use and goodwill, including placing our daughter, Carolyn, at "Shalamar's" helm and performing for the last 15 years in "Shalamar". Although failing health began to lessen involvement, Dick maintained mentoring of "Shalamar", until his death in September of 2010.

If Jody loses this case, she's probably gonna wish that she had a remained a solo performer (adding a few Shalamar songs to her set).It would have been much easier.

Carrie of course would take her GREEDY and SHADY husband side of this. Her solo career never jumped off like the rest of the SOLAR clan.

Professional images belonged to SOLAR Records. BUT THE OTHER TWO CONTINUED TO USE THE CLASSIC THREE LINEUP PHOTOS FOR SHOWS implying that JW was performing with them for years and refused to stop. EVEN HIT WITH A CEASE ORDER.

An original member, selected and put in "Shalamar", quit the group in1983 for a successful solo career . Never performing as a regular member of "Shalamar", for 30 years. After 30 years, an undetected 2013 filing process now challenged, allowed claim of "ownership", of the very group and label that launched their solo career. YES AND DICK HAD AN PECENTAGE OF HER DEBUT CD. WHICH I AM SURE CARRIE BENEFITED FROM THOSE SALES. Watley and Daniel separately left the band over conflicts within the group and other issues with Dick Griffey and Solar Records. LIKE GERARD BROWN SAID WHERE WAS THE MONEY?

Everyone worked hard for the success of "Shalamar", and every former member has the right to work as former members. But no one worked harder than Dick, and no one has the right to profess ownership of something Dick created, sacrificed for and poured our money into.
In 1984, Dick spearheaded a nationwide talent search to replace the female member of "Shalamar". A new female lead was placed in the group,
and "Shalamar", received their biggest pop hit in 1984 and a Grammy Award with the new lineup. THE SOUNDTRACK OF BEVERLY HILLS COP WON THE GRAMMY AND THAT FOOTLOOSE SONG WAS A TOP 20 HIT IN 1984.

"Shalamar", continued recording RECORDING WHAT? WHERE? YOU MEAN DOING THAT PRE UK VERSION OF THE VOICE? THE REMAKE WITH BABYFACE INCLUDED THE CLASSIC LINEUP NOT THAT FAKE TOURING VERSION and performing OVERSEAS NOT STATESIDE. IF THIS WAS THE CASE WHY DIDNT THEY TAKE NEW PHOTOS AND USE THOSE INSTEAD OF THE CLASSIC THREE. JW SLOWLY ADDED A SHALAMAR SONG HERE AND THERE INTO HER SHOWS IN 2003. HER SHOWS DIDNT RELY ON THOSE SONGS.

TELL THE TRUTH

Why would Jody want to be back associated with a group that caused her so much turmoil in her life? She has enough solo hits of her own. I can see if she had just one hit. Like most solo acts barely have. Then she may need their extra ones. But she doesn't. Even her ex husband didn't perform prince's hits when he came back. He only had one hit solo song & didn't perform that!

Dick Griffey was basically a pre-cursor to Suge Knight. I've heard all kinds of stories about how he'd use threats, intimidation and underhanded means to achieve whatever bottom line he wanted. According to Jody, he kept her contractually detained for a time past her quitting the group and leaving the SOLAR label, and as a result he was able to collect an override fee from the profits generated by her first album. And he wouldn't pay the original lead singer of Shalamar, Gerald Brown, which is how Howard wound up in the group in the first place. One has to wonder how many royalty checks she was cheated out of over the years from whatever profits the Shalamar brand may have continued to generate after the fact.

After all the oppression she suffered at the hands of Shalamar/SOLAR/Griffey/Hewett, I totally get why she is still embittered, skittish, standoffish or even feels entitled. And if she was able to legally acquire the name of the group from on-the-level means, then more power to her for it.

Folks like Sharon Osbourne's father Don Arden and Nat Tarnopol and many others was along these lines too. Nat was said to have mafia connections. Bon Jovi's manager Doc McGhee did some drug smuggling.

Watley isn't interested in the "Shalamar" her main objective is to fuck with the people around Shalamar who caused her grief / pain.

As I mentioned to phunkdaddy, Jody should have taken satisfaction in the fact... she had the music career and the other two flopped. She could have taken satisfaction in Solar Records begging her stay in the fold... after they had dogged the girl. At this point, I don't think Watley isn't at peace. There's something about that idea... you need forgive folks in order for you to move on. Still, if the fake group was a success, she'd still have somthing to say and she'd still be miserable. lol
