i got to use Google Play at a barbecue this weekend, and I couldn't tell it wasn't lossless.smile

I think its all relavtive...

The marketing of streaming sites . that you are listening to high fidelity / lossless files for most people comes with a shrug. Modest priced, amp, DAC, headphones, speakers or soundcard these days can greatly improve the sound of most music in any format.

My problem is.. for an album I really want to sit down and listen to and experience, especially a highly anticipated new release, I don't want to sit down and STREAM it. lol You know?

I have all of Erykah Badu's albums but New Amerykah Volume Four dropping... do I really wanna find a computer somewhere and stream it? lol

eek when? where? Google totally failed me on this search, partly as Volume 1 is subtitled 4th World War to throw shit off. Did Vol 3 get a proper release or is it a boot? You got my head spinning right now.

I'm just giving an example of some future shit I would definitely cop with no possible way a stream would suffice. Sorry! That's why I didn't refer to it as Volume Three.

I know I haven't changed because I was looking at a CD on eBay TODAY! And I have been wanting it since 2005 (according to an org thread that came up in my search).

That's because these entertainers are so narcissistic, thinking that they are the end all to be all, think that they can just throw anything out there, and the masses will go for it, and just start throwing money at them, no matter what. They are so used to being worshiped and idolized by some of their idiot followers, that they think that anything they do will be glorified. All of these people need to be brought down a peg or two. Most music put out today is garbage and not worth paying a dime for, but these egotistical entertainers think anything they utter has got to be the greatest thing ever. Folks should be more than sick and tired of these morons, and more than sick and tired of giving these rich, greedy bastards their hard earned money! It has to stop somewhere, because it's out of control, and the rich celebs and entertainers are just getting richer and greedier while the people giving them their money are getting poorer.....wake up people, wake up!!!!

Ten years ago I would've responded to this post by saying "Co-sign", but no-one says that anymore, so I'll just commend you on your refreshing, bullshit-free truth eruption.

What makes me laugh is when the fans boast about their idols' wealth as if it was their own. It's like Stockholm Syndrome or something, lol.

Frankly, it's IMMORAL for so few to have so much when so many people are struggling needlessly. There's no shortage of money out there. It's the distribution that's fucked up.

I found this very interesting commentary on another forum.....what do you guys think? hmmm

Why do some people think they're "entitled" to free music?

This younger generation is ridiculously entitled and have grown up in an environment promoting free ownership of music. Also, unfortunately, many poor people immediately hate on those with money and throw logic and reason out the window when it comes to them, as a result. And, they have been used to getting help, hand-me-downs, aid and assistance from either the government or those who have money. So, for them to, seemingly, have to start paying for something they've been getting for free is a huge insult to them and is seen as yet another "rich getting richer, poor getting poorer" scenario.

Thing is, on what are they listening to this streaming music? Isn't it on a relatively expensive, electronic device you had to pay for? What would happen if streaming music or file-sharing was never invented? Wouldn't you, then, have to count on getting your free music by listening to the radio? And, what would happen if you loved a song so much that you wanted to own it for yourself? You'd have to go and, GASP, BUY it! And, as so many have said, what would happen if, at pay day, employees of a company opened up their envelopes and saw their paychecks reading $0.00? A riot would ensue! But, somehow, it's ok for artists not to be paid for their work? I don't think so.

Also, not being able to make money off their work does create an environment where artists either don't have the time or lose their interest in pursuing their art, thereby drastically limiting the amount of quality art out there, which would allow for more crap "art" to be available to the masses, significantly influencing what is mentally perceived and accepted as true art. SO many affects!

Thing is, you want free music? Listen to the radio. You want the LUXURY of being able to own music and manipulate what you listen to and when? Then, you gotsta BUY the music. Plain and simple.

Thanks for sharing Soul. However, I thought this commentary was a bit jugemental. So everyone from this generation who streams music illegally doesn' work for anything in life? Because that is pretty much what this post is saying. Don't get me wrong there are a ton of things that are not right with this generation and the way this generation "thinks" but then again the same thing can be said about past generations as well. This commentator s missing the big picture though in this fiasco.

Instead of questioning why this generation feels "entitled to free music" why not question why TODAYS generation of artists feel THEY are entitled to money because of who they are and not based on the quality of a product they are trying to sell. Its almost like "Oh because your Jay Z, a rich rapper you deserve my money" to me this sends the message that everyone else in the world is beneath you and are peasants who should just give you money because of who you are. Who cares who you are, TELL ME about the product. How is this product different from other products that are on the market? That is what people want to know.

You make some valid points

This Tidal thing really disgusted me. I didn't like most of celebrites on that stage and I REALLY don't like them now. And their poor stans. It's really sad that they can't see how insulting it was for their favorite artists to try and pimp them a product just because they said jump? When Tidal launched I didn't know a damn thing about it even after Tidal's presentation and neither did their stans but that didn't stop them from defending it to the death on behalf of multi-millionaire celebrities that don't get a shit about them but making them richer. They are aware of how mindless their stans are and will capitalize on it in anyway for more money and they just go right along with it.

I was extra disgusted when they tried to tie Tidal's martketing into how social justice movements get started on Twitter (with changing Twitter icons, and starting a hashtag.) Seriously fuck them. lol

Jay-Z Borrows From The Internet Activist Playbook to Launch His Music App Tidal

Written by

Ben Richmond

There are few people on Earth as beloved as Jay-Z, but the rapper-turned-entrepreneur is still capable of big, public screw-ups: whatever happened in that elevator with Solange, his lame verse on Kayne's “Monster,” and now, borrowing language and protest techniques from the internet activist toolkit to launch his really expensive music-streaming service.

Like Neil Young's Pono, a $400 high-fidelity music player, Tidal aims to be the celebrity-endorsed luxury tier of streaming services. Jay-Z bid $56 million for Tidal...in January. Unlike Spotify, there's no free version of Tidal; there is only a $19.95 monthly subscription. For twice the cost of Spotify, Tidal subscribers get Taylor Swift's back catalog and high quality lossless audio.

But to advertise the launch of Tidal, the likes of Kayne West, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Madonna—as well as other musicians less often associated with the Illuminati, such as Jack White and Coldplay—all changed their social media profile pictures to a turquoise-coloured square.

And after Jay-Z's posted a variation on a Bob Dylan's protest rally standard at midnight, participating artists and/or their social media teams included a similar message, somewhere along the lines of “Together, we can turn the tide and make music history. Start by turning your profile picture blue,” and followed by the hashtag #TIDALforALL.

It’s not uncommon for Twitter and Facebook users to change their avatars in support of various causes: While the US Supreme Court was debating the Defense of Marriage Act in March 2013, supporters of marriage...n’s logo. During the 2009 Green Movement in Iran, millions of Twitter users tinted their avatars green.

Unlike Tidal, these gestures were a small form of social activism. You can, and many have, debated whether this is effective activism or whether it should even count as activism at all, but regardless, #TIDALforALL is categorically different.

We have a word for it is. It's called advertising.

Twitter users noticed the similarity right away, and characteristically voiced their displeasure at the perceived hijacking. What other reaction could be expected from people who believe in—and stand up for—the activist power of Twitter?

Some pointed out that several of the artists participating are pretty much the most successful in the world, and that whatever tidal shift this service starts only serves to make the rich richer.

Others pointed out that this a pretty self-serving cause for people who didn’t use their platforms to speak out over a summer of hashtag activism that rose in response to the killing of Michael Brown in Missouri and Eric Garner in New York.

Some dutifully followed along, oblivious that they were part of a product tie-in. This is a different type of failure of advertising.

What tide is changing here? Given that Tidal is already being called a rival to Spotify, presumably the service will aim to hit Spotify's most public weakness—how little it pays artists. A request for comment sent to Tidal has yet to be answered (though, presumably, Jay-Z will address compensation at a press event today at 5 pm).

But even if Tidal pays artists more, it still isn't a revolution. It's a product, maybe a slightly more ethical product, but an expensive one at that. #TIDALforALL is a way of saying “everyone should give us 20 bucks a month” in as few characters as possible.

This isn't the first time that the language or tools of a social movement have been appropriated... something. But maybe Tidal and Jay-Z knew that this would trigger backlash, and have learned from Kayne that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Maybe they're deeply cynical about the power of Twitter social movements, and are confident that their brand can weather the outrage.

Or maybe the fact that we get advertising and activism and celebrity #engagement all through the same medium is confusing. Of course someone was going to try to capitalize on that confusion eventually.

Ohhhh...

Man, they really effed up by putting their true colors on display and tried to change the hue by sugarcoating it to make it sound like the consumer is supposed to benefit substantially from investing in Tidal and helping poor old million dollar-grossing them. While I agree that artists get screwed over by major labels, having the most successful and rich artists who have their hands in several cookie jars outside of music and are making plenty of money from them and trying to play the victim on top of offering nothing unique from the competition (much less anything that is incentive enough for the consumer to buy into) is stupidly awful PR.

It may still be too early to tell Tidal's fate but I still think its a sinking ship yet to set sail.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I really question the validity of this claim. lol If you notice, their camp have been leaking similiar stories within the last few weeks because they were called out for not caring about social issues after Jay released that obnoxious Tidal press conference. Everything the Carters do is calculated. They don't care about black people and Jay Z still has not released a professional video about how TIDAL is more better for consumers versus other streamers. He keeps using his celebrity to get more subscribers. He still doesn't get it lol

Other "exclusive" content is now easily accessible from the usual suspects. Not naming names, but look around. I just don't see the consumer incentive.

Jay-Z is trying to position his high-fidelity streaming service Tidal as a platform where he and his artist comrades can deliver exclusive music at a premium price. The Internet has other plans. A new music video, which debuted as a Tidal exclusive, has now leaked to the masses and can be viewed for free.

A teaser clip for Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé’s “Feeling Myself” was loaded to YouTube Monday. “Watch the full video now exclusively on TIDAL.com,” the caption reads. When users access Tidal.com, they will also see the video on the home page.

However, the video, in its entirety, has made its way off of Tidal and onto anonymous sharing websites and various social media outlets.

The “Feeling Myself” music video was anonymously loaded on to Vid.me about 15 hours ago and has been viewed almost 180,000 times, with nearly 5,000 people watching the Coachella-themed spot as of midday Tuesday. It's the number one featured video on the Vid.me homepage.

“Feeling Myself” has also made its way to Tumblr.com, with the post from a single Tumblr user having been shared over 7,000 times.

Users have even attempted to upload the video on to YouTube. However, YouTube has stringent copyright rules. Some Youtube users have found a loophole to load “Feeling Myself." Uploading the video as unlisted helps it go undetected.

While Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj fans are excited to see the video, there has been continued resistance against Tidal, with many thanking those who have uploaded the video and insisting they would not spend money on Jay-Z's endeavor.

Tidal promises High fidelity, or Hi-Fi, quality music streaming, as well as supposedly exclusive content, and charges users between $9.99 and $19.99 monthly. The biggest complaint against Tidal since it launched in March is that there is no free option, similar to rival music streaming services, such as Spotify, Pandora and iTunes. Thus far, Tidal has not drawn legions of fans and fell out of the top 700 apps downloaded in the U.S. in April.

Jay-Z has been extremely vocal about the criticism against the service. He took to Twitter in April, insisting that Tidal has advantages for both users and artists. It allows performers to receive considerably more royalties for their content than rivals like Spotify or YouTube. “The iTunes Store wasn't built in a day. It took Spotify 9 years to be successful. ... We are here for the long haul,”Jay-Z wrote in a Tweet. “Please give us a chance to grow & get better.”

The Brooklyn-born rapper hosted an exclusive show for Tidal subscribers (one of the perks of membership) last Saturday at Terminal 5 in New York City, where he took shots at several large tech companies including Apple, YouTube and Spotify.

"Spotify is nine million, they ain’t say sh-t / Lucy you got some esplainin’ to do / The only one they hatin’ on looks the same as you / That’s cool, I know they tryin’ to bamboozle you / Spendin’ millions on me to try to confuse you," he rhymed.

There's really no way of knowing how true this is nor how much they gave and what have you but this has been the "talk" around the internet for the last couple of days. shrug

I still see no value in TIDAL for MY money though. no no no!

Agreed. On top of that, the person who released the information about Jay-Z bailing out protestors was Jay-Z's journalist friend who also co-wrote his autobiography. So until I see receipts, it's just more PR bullshit.
