Could A Song Like ''Dude Looks Like A Lady'' Be Made Today? With how PC the world is getting nowadays. I Wonder if a song like dude looks like a lady could be made. I feel like it's a harmless and silly song of it's time period. But if it were made today it would be hella controversial. And have deozens of angry blogs written about how insensitive it is. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

It would be insensitive and just plain old fashioned dumb/ignorant if you are directing that song at trangender people (Which is where I think you may be implying the outrage would come from) More importantly is that even who the song was directed to or about? I didnt think so. .

Only if the singer is Steven Tyler or someone else who looks sorta like a lady.

With the new look/change of Bruce Jenner and the popularity of the Netflix series "Transparent," not to mention how androgynous today's youth can be (have you seen the low-rise/skinny jeans on the boys these days?)... why not have a song like "DLLAL" find popularity now? I'm sure Aerosmith didn't mean harm when it was written/sung because they were not blatantly bashing anyone in a hateful way. RuPaul, "The Crying Game," and other genderbending came about after the release of the song, but had been going on long before then too. I think it's kind of humorous in that the mistake is thinking it's a hot lady - when really it's just a guy who happens to look like a lady. It might be an old joke, but it's a classic one that still can get a chuckle.

I could see the trannies getting their panties in a bunch over this. Especially, the ugly ones who don't pass! They are very bitter in general. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

Seriously WTF kind of nasty comment is this?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Today? No. You know why? Because hair metal died a nasty death years and years ago, and Motley Crue changed up their image too many times to be considered the dudes that look like ladies since they did the glam stuff only in 85 (since it was allegedly written about them, or Vince Neil in particular). I mean I guess they could. They could title it "Dude continues on path to look like that old lady you always see at a bar trying to relive her prime but in actuality receives nothing but empathy from younger guys while also making an ass of himself multiple times while hosting American Idol". Oh wait... [Edited 4/11/15 6:36am] Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

I dont know if id call it a nasty comment per se. How I see it, Midnite called it like it is since everybody knows Transgender folk arent the most good-humored of people. Not trying to come off as an instigator or an a-hole or whatever, but some Transgender folks will brave the storm and get the operation done VERY WELL AWARE they're about to enter a world of total ridicule, and major intolerance. Knowing that fully, they all take the heat in different ways. A good amount of them choose to ignore the consequences of their actions and simply cant believe when somebody doesnt like what they've chosen to become. Its the classic "Having their cake and eating it too" situation. The country has come a long way, yes. But sex-change operations are still rather taboo, and you cant huff and puff in anger if somebody isnt comfortable with your major decision. You can't get all pissy if one day you choose to sit out front of your property wearing nothing but a g-string totally spread-eagle while waving to your elderly neighbors, and they say something to you about it. But hey, I have nothing but respect for the sex-change folks. They werent feeling right in their bodies so they did something about it. Thats courage I'd never be able to muster up. But if you cant see what you've become with a sense of humor while welcoming the haters with freshly-waxed open arms (since you decided to become a woman of course), then you should have reconsidered your actions and not gone through with it. Par for the course, people. As for the "bitter" statement: Maybe they're bitter because they didnt turn out to be quite the way they envisioned themselves in their mind. Lord knows Id be pissed if I put in the money and effort to get the classic Liz Taylor look but ended up looking like Paulie Shore. Thats a fate worse than death... His comment is nasty not because he doesn't 'agree' with someone's choice, but because it's profoundly dehumanising. 'Trannies getting their panties in a bunch because they're ugly and bitter and don't pass'. Seriously? Maybe if you and he and significant chunks of the rest of this country weren't so focussed on other people's physical appearance as a measure of their fundamental worth as human beings then it wouldn't matter if transgender people 'passed' or not, and then they wouldn't have a reason to be bitter.
And we're not talking about 'haters' here, we're talking about large segments of the population who think it's perfectly okay to scream at, threaten, beat, rape and murder people whose personal expression offends them.

Ok Im getting the serious impression that you've quickly gone on the defense and either didnt realize that A) Nothing I said in my above statement was aimed to piss anyone off and I said it for how it is and nothing else, or B) The light-hearted jokes I stated clearly were misconstrued as a from of hate-speech. Did you purposely leave out the fact I stated CLEARLY that I have nothing but respect for Transgenders and respect the hell out of their courage to fix the issues they feel within themselves? Honestly, did you do that just so you could catch feelings and go out of your way to wrongfully lump me in with some ignorant assholes that are intolerant, or did your quick temper make you blind and you proceeded to start throwing proverbial fists in the dark? What I said above was neutral. Black and White, no gray area bullshit. And for the record, no I dont think what they said was ignorant. Ignorance is pointing fingers and calling Trannies "Freaks", or "He-Shes" or whatever the derogatory terms are. I may be wrong, but it seems to me you've been in heated discussions or confrontations about this very topic before and those potential experiences have rendered your ability to realize that "Ok, wait a minute. No, this guy isnt trying to step-on toes and what he stated above was nothing horrible or cruel. Oh wait, he RESPECTS Transgender people? I should make a mental note of that and NOT QUESTION THIS PERSON'S ABILITY TO MEASURE ANOTHER PERSON'S FUNDAMENTAL WORTH, AND DEFINITELY NOT LUMP HIM IN WITH THE UNSAVORY TYPES OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE LED ME TO HAVE SUCH ANGER". It was all light-hearted and not to pat myself on the back but I thought the Liz Taylor/Paulie Shore joke was pretty good and was meant for you to chuckle at. Please see this for what my intentions initially were and hopefully you'll realize that its never my goal to piss people off. I meant well, you just took it the wrong way. And for the record: I live in the NorthEast, New Jersey to be exact. Hour train ride to NYC. This area is the most diverse on our land and being in this cultural hot spot taught me very quickly that people of all sorts walk their beat here and the more spice and diversity added to your life, the more well-rounded and accepting AND open-minded you'll be. Much peace to you, sorry to upset you. [Edited 4/11/15 8:20am] Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

The fact that you think you're showing respect for transgender people while referring to them as 'trannies' tells me that this is a pointless conversation to continue. Thanks for playing, have a cookie.

I see. You seem to be an understanding, well-rounded person that clearly focuses on the good in people as well as possessing an uncanny ability to step out of yourself and give off incredible empathy. Obviously you specialize in reading between the lines when theres nothing there to be read but in actuality you should be reading the fine print. But obviously you got your wits about you, so reminding you is pointless since you're on top of it. Thanks for taking something I said that had no hate or cruelty whatsoever with it and turning it around to make me look like an ignorant asshole. You got far too crunchy and sensitive for your own good and couldnt accept an apology. Clearly Im conversing with a deeply frustrated individual whos anger is too far gone to reason with. And Ill pass on the cookie, too much sugar after a while will turn you into a Karma Chameleon. Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

The person who sings the song will be attacked for being 'transphobic' They'll apologize, but then be attacked for their 'privilege' and how they're not shamed for being trans so why are they talking about trans issues in the first place Then, those same people will complain about trans being under-presented/not talked about Maybe do, just not like did before

No, not in this overly-liberal, PC society we're trapped in today would a song like this pass without some oversensitive person taking a harmless song out of context and making a it a national crisis.

Put it this way, could shows like ALL IN THE FAMILY, SANFORD AND SON, JEFFERSONS etc..exist now without letter writing campaigns and demands for apologies weekly for something said on the shows. The answer NO NO NO and did i say NO because this PC culture where people behind laptops and keyboards suddenly think they can start the next NEWS EVENT because they didnt like a JOKE boo hoo grow up and change the channel. No, because Nirvana killed rock and roll so therefore there aren't any musicians around now that could play that song, much less write it.

How about songs about grown men falling in love with 17 years olds? No way is that happening today.
Jamie Foxx got some heat for his jokes about Bruce Jenner.
“We got Bruce Jenner, who will be here doing some musical performances,” the host said. “He’s doing a his-and-her duet all by himself.” Foxx added: “Look, I’m just busting your balls while I still can."

Doesn't the guy in the lyrics gets over the fact that she is a he and still sleeps with him cause shes so hot. I always took it that the dude was just a drag queen and not a cis. Then again what the hell does most of Tyler's lyrics even mean. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

I was just thinking the exact same things the other day when i was watching repeats of All in the family and Sanford and son. Those shows could never exist now. So many people would be pissed and offended. Another while we're on the subject of changing times. What is really considered bullying? Because when I was growing up, everyone got teased for something. It's just called being a kid and going through life. Now it's bullying. Wth??

In this culture now so many things have changed. because of social media, which I think leads to half of kids being depressed, and leads to a new kind of bullying, but at the same time, i like you, saw these things growing up, kids were kids, but now it seems there are many more suicides, shootings (way more) and alot more kids depressed, where is it coming from is the big question, bad parents, social media, images on tv and magazines?
But on the PC thing those shows would be OFF the air, to me Red Foxx saying the N word about 15 times during the run of that show, his character referenciing whites, puerto ricans (he really tore them up as that character) that shit would never be allowed, there would be protests outside his dressing room, Carol O Connor as Archie saying the N word, shit you know that would be a sharpton march tomorrow.
