The Spaniels were a pioneering doowop vocal group from Gary, Indiana, and were probably the first successful R&B group to emerge from the USA's MidWestern states. They were also the first group to be signed by the new VeeJay label (they had already signed Jimmy Smith), and became the label's most successful vocal group as it established itself as probably the first independent African-American owned label of any significance. The group came together at Roosevelt High School in Gary, led by James 'Pookie' Hudson, and they were the first vocal group to use the technique of having a lead singer at one microphone with the other members at a second. . They scored in 1953 with their first release Baby It's You, which made the R&B Top 10 and in 1954 had their biggest hit with Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite which was an R&B No. 5 and crossed over to No. 24 in the pop charts. This great value 51-track 2-CD collection brings together all the tracks that they released during the first decade of their career, either as A & B sides of their singles or on their two LPs for VeeJay, and it is a great showcase for their distinctive vocal talents and high quality songwriting. It's welcome addition to Acrobat's already substantial catalogue of doowop offerings. . Disc: 1 . You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton | |

Very sad that Warner Brothers has decided to license BBR to reissue some of Chaka's Warner catalog. Since they are a U.K. label, it will be almost impossible for them to license any unreleased tracks (and there were a few from this album). I would normaly say, "what's the point of reissuing this without the full concert?", but I may purchase because the original CD issue of the album was so poorly mastered. Hopefully, one day, FTG or another American label will be able to license Khan's entire Warner catalog and release proper reissues with bonus tracks. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Warner Brothers could have chosen to reissue "Stompin" themselves as a deluxe CD/DVD, with the complete concert on CD as well as a DVD of the concert, which was promised back in 1983, but, for whatever reason, they decided againt releasing it on video and it's been sitting in the vaults ever since. Charlie Rich So Lonesome I Could Cry on CD & LPRelease: May 4, 2015
.
"The Hi recordings of Charlie Rich are in many ways the most reckless and adventurous of his career. In 1966 and 1967, Hi, a small Memphis label that hosted acts such as Willie Mitchell (and later Al Green) and the Bill Black Combo believed, like Sun, RCA, and Mercury before them, in Rich’s prodigious talent but had no idea where to put him categorically...Most are the songs associated with Hank Williams...They are revelatory in that they reveal just how wide-ranging Rich’s vision was.
.
"Beginning with Williams’ own “My Heart Would Know,” Rich takes the songs deep into his own musical soul and, like Ray Charles before him with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, makes them his own, turning them into timeless pop classics. Among Rich’s recordings, these 12 songs are some of the most enduring. There is "You Win Again," where the pedal steel becomes an instrument of timbral control and coloration and the lyric becomes a shimmying doo wop-framed melody; "Hey Good Lookin'" sounds as if Rich is backed by Booker T. & the MG's and the Meters simultaneously. The cool Hammond B3 run at the beginning of "Nobody's Lonesome for Me" takes a honky tonk tune and turns it inside out, making it a rousing party anthem.
.
"As for Williams "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," Rich's version is among the most beautiful and emotionally naked ever recorded. The set closes with Leon Payne's "They'll Never Take Her Love Away From Me." As pedal steel guitar winds out the sang lines, Rich pours virtually everything he has into Payne's deeply moving lyric. This isn't merely a sad song, it's a devastating one; it's a suicide note; but the tenderness evoked by Rich makes it among the most beautifully twisted love songs ever performed. This collection is essential for Rich fans, and something to consider for any fan of timeless, restless country-soul from the 1960s." - Fat Possum / Thom Jurek, All Music

Rod Stewart An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down on 180g LP
Release: June 23, 2015
.
With his soulful and singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has paved one of the most iconic and successful musical careers of all time. From his time in the Jeff Beck Group to The Faces to his ever evolving solo career, the two time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has been at music's pinnacle for more than five decades!
.
The majority of Stewart's solo debut was recorded during a white hot time of his blossoming career when he was still officially a member of the Jeff Beck Group and was on the brink of joining The Faces. It was issued in the U.S. at the end of 1969 under the title The Rod Stewart Album and in the U.K. in early-1970 as An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down.
.
The auspicious 8-track offering features all the signposts of a vital artist in the making. Successfully incorporating elements of folk, blues and rock & roll with aplomb, Rod tackles the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man," Mike D'Abo's "Handbags And Gladrags," Ewan MacColl's "Dirty Old Town" and shows off his songwriting acumen to boot with the four outstanding originals "Blind Prayer," "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down," "I Wouldn't Ever Change a Thing" and "Cindy's Lament."
.

Duran Duran‘s classic 1982 album Rio is being made available again this summer as a two-CD deluxe edition. It was noted by some at the time that it was rather crass to have the words ‘Limited Edition’ spoil the aesthetic of the front cover, but at least it does seem to have genuinely been limited since this set has been out-of-print for a while.
Rio will be reissued on 22 June 2015. A one-CD remaster will also be made available.

Notable for LaBelle's first solo Top Ten Hits, "If Only You Knew" and "Love, Need And Want You", it became LaBelle's first successful solo album after five previous releases and six years. Most of LaBelle's 1982 recordings included live instrumentation and strings while 1983 recordings had producers experimenting with electronics, showcasing the lengthy year in recording. LaBelle also experimented with jazz music, covering the standard, "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" A synthpop track, "I'll Never, Never Give Up", was one of the final songs recorded for the album, and which included funk and gospel elements plus a male backup vocal chorus. Another song overdubbed from initial sessions of The Spirit's in It was "Love Bankrupt", which included strong country elements. Going over material, the album's executive producers Gamble & Huff picked the mid-tempo, string-laden "If Only You Knew", as the "one with the most hit potential", issuing "I'll Never, Never Give Up" as its B-side to dance clubs. The album launched two singles - "If Only You Knew" and "Love, Need And Want You". It's truly a soul classic, flawless, with silky moments on the album. If you want to hear how Soul should be done, simply get this album. Talk about dull bonus tracks!!! A bunch of single versions. They should have left well enough alone.
