The lawyers are over the moon with this shit. You best believe they're conniving their most lucrative schemes today!

.

Check this out:

.

http://www.cbsnews.com/ne...-to-happy/

.

While the family was just awarded $7.4 million -- and is currently seeking an injunction against the song -- that doesn't mean their legal battle is over. According to some online, Williams' 2014 mega-hit "Happy" bears a similar sound to Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar."

"I'm not going to lie. I do think they sound alike," Nona Gaye, Marvin's 40-year-old daughter, said.

.

The slippery slope has begun...

"Happy" is obviously inspired by 60s Motown, but it's a stretch for Nona to say that it's a direct rip-off of her father's song.Someone should tell her that it's OK for songs to be inspired by previous eras rolleyes Raphael Saadiq did an entire album inspired by 60s soul music.Nona should focus more on her own musical career....oh wait, she doesn't have one.My bad.

Depends if Kashif wants to be a dick, but this "blurred lines" case won't influence a glut more of these sorta cases, as these copyright cases happen to big songs all the time probably. Just that most don't actually have much of a leg to stand on. Plus you need big money to sue LOL.

Pharell's whole career is based off other folks work.

He should be very concerned about the outcome of this case.

Motown could have sued since they owned the recording and probably the publishing. They took the Jackson 5 and Joe Jackson to court and said they owned the name "Jackson 5". That's why they became "The Jacksons" at CBS Records.

Speaking of Nona, she hasn't done anything in a minute... no acting or nothing. Guess the Pharrell payday will come in handy.

Change it one more time..

He's rarely produced such a transparent imitation as "Blurred Lines." Of course he has reason to worry, but it was his and Robin Thicke's own comments linking "GTGIU" to "BL" that IMO sunk him.

I don't know about that. Everytime I hear one of his songs, I can hear where it came from within 15 seconds.

Yeah, virtually all of Pharrell's tracks have a source. But BL was an extended sample. I agree that the case opens the door. But he's usually been clever enough to dilute tracks to the point where you can hear the influence without exposing them as blatant ripoffs.

How does copyright work on house, rave, and techno songs? A lot of them sound alike to me. lol So do some old blues songs, tejano, salsa, new jack swing, etc. Some Motown & Stax songs from the 1960s sound similar to each other and songs by certain producers like LA & Babyface and Stock Aitken Waterman. There's a song from the 1970s called Trying To Love Two by William Bell and many modern "soul blues" tunes (ig. Mel Waiters) have the same vocal arrangements. Malaco Records have a lot of soundalike songs too.

Copyright in ANY genre of music is supposed to work on lyrics and melody. That's why there are alot of people confused right now because the BL case seems to be on production treatment.

Motown was very much imvolved with Marvin & his Legal issues around that 'Here my Dear' period.

I agree....everybody has forgotten about that though.

I'm amazed at how many threads there are on this topic already. I didn't think it would be that big a deal on the org.

Like I said on another thread had Thicke and Pharrell did their homework and
given proper credit to the writers we would not be having this conversation.

Not worth going after. Gotta be a huge hit to bother with a settlement or court trial. Also need artists permission to persue I presume?

And as I said somewhere else, of course songs from the same period will sound similar. But unfortunately the word similar and ripoff mean the same thing to some people (i.e lawyers).

She's never done anything significant lol She had a debut album that flopped, then worked with Prince on some stuff, but I don't think she ever came back with another album.

Here's the thing...

to me,the best 'new' songs that I hear today are those that are inspired by the past.

Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" is like a modern-day Chic song, with Niles on it playing guitar.

I'm a huge fan of Jamiroquai and their stuff is obviously heavily inspired by the late 70s...drawing inspiration from artists like Roy Ayers,Pleasure, and others.

Raphael Saadiq's The Way I See It is a masterpiece to me.

I have been saying for years that we need to get back to that type of music lol and now everyone is doing the retro thing. But unfortunately, thanks to these ridiculous lawsuits, more artists might abandon the 'retro' thing and go back to making the lame shit-hop,modern crap that was dominating for so long (yeah,I know I sound like Vainandy (lol),but y'all know what I'm saying).
