How did your radio career begin?

J: Well, I started off as an intern at AM station, doing promotions. I was there maybe a good two years. It was a chance for me to meet the program director, Clarence Baker. He used to do mid-days there. I met him at this soul event they was having one Saturday. They had Chi-Lites, New Birth, Emotions performing. I was working for him and I said something to him about deejaying on the air. I told him what I wanted to do. I said "I want to do what you do. I want to be behind the microphone. I want to be on the air". He looked at me and said "You sure you want to do that? Are you sure you want to be on the radio? I said "Yea, I can try" He said "Alright, come hang with me monday and in the station and let's see what you can do". When I first got on in the studio, they taught me the boards. That was my way in, you have to learn the boards.

How's the scene in your eyes at the moment?

J: I feel that there's a need for more black music videos. Black artists need exposure, more than just the radio. Pointer Sisters, Maze & Frankie Beverly, Barkays, The Time, Slave, a whole bunch of groups that you hear a lot on the radio, especially like WBLS and stuff but you dont really see their videos because those particular groups, they are not with record companies that can afford ti make videos for them. So what they should try to do is try to get those groups exposure in addition of videos.

What is something the listeners do not know about you?

J: I'm a very shy person. A lot of people dont believe me when I say this but there still are moments when I feel shy. Some people just put on this bubbly personality whenever they get out in the public, but I still find this very hard to do. I dread doing events because just the thought of speaking in front of hundreds of people makes me nervous. I just feel more comfortable in the studio and maybe thats why I'm not comfortable at events because I dont do those enough. Whenever I interview a guest or a sports figure, I get nervous at first but after speaking to them for a while, and seeing that they're just like me, a person, I'm cool. Some were nervous themselves. Nobody believes me when I tell them this because I sound so self assured and confident on the air. Really, thats the only time I'm really comfortable when it's just me on the air.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ASPIRING UPCOMING DEEJAYS?

J: If you really want to get in radio, be prepared to work hard. That's what I tell young people, because some actually think radio is just spinning records and playing around and its nothing like that. Now, dont get me wrong. It's fun..very exciting and rewarding, but its not as easy as it seems. There's a lot going on behind the scenes that they dont hear much about: producers, directors, managers, engineers, techinicans, writers and editors. You may still want to be a deejay or a newscaster at a radio station or an anchorperson or a reporter on a TV news show. But if you really want to be on the air, thats something that you got to get used to. I understand a lot of the young people dont like working hard. Hell, I dont like working hard, but thats the part of the business. Its rough sometimes but I wouldnt trade my job for anything.
