Catchiest Song Ever

Discounting songs that you hate (some of the most awful songs are the catchiest - MMMBop anyone?), what do you feel is the cathiest song ever?

One of my favorites is The Ballad Of Gilligan's Isle by The Eligibles

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It used to come on Saturday mornings. There was a Dukes Of Hazzard cartoon too, but most of it was Coy & Vance instead of Bo & Luke. Happy Days & Punky Brewster also had cartoon versions.

Did you know James Brown wanted to appear on Boss Hogg's Speed Trap as he was a fan of The Dukes Of Hazzard? According to Ben Jones' (who played Cooter on The Dukes) autobiography, the network (CBS) declined James offer because they didn't think the audience for The Dukes would be interested in JB. The cast was upset about this decision and thought that the network had no idea of what they were talking about.

CBS did not understand the popularity of the show or who the audience was. The network figured that the main audience were rural or that country music fans did not like R&B/funk. Ronnie Milsap was popular and his music tended to be R&B based and so was a lot of other country songs. That's how they can make those Country Funk compilations. Roy Clark made an album with blues act Gatemouth Brown. Barbara Mandrell remade soul songs.

I liked Barbara Mandrell's cover of If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want To Be Right). Now, there's a catchy song...

Of course, no one did it better than Luther Ingram

Rod Stewart's version

Percy Sledge

And the wonderful Millie Jackson
