P-Funk: What was their BEST album?

I listen 2 the entire P-funk catalog on a regular basis.

Which album do u think is their best?

I'd have to go with Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome or Motor Booty Affair.

For me it's The Mothership Connection. That's the album that got me into the P-Funk Mob. Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Brecker Brothers, Maceo and Fred, Glen Goins created a ghetto sci-fi musical collage.

Identity

It's a tie between the groundbreaking Mothership Connection and the aquatic-themed opus Motor Booty Affair.

Funk is still its own reward.

The ones I listen to most are Mothership Connection, Funkeltelechy, Let's Take It To The Stage and Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On. I guess I'll say Let's Take It is their best, a nice variety of sounds and different approaches, some of their simplest/ catchiest numbers and some of their most bonkers ones too.

I'm not even going to try to answer this question. Because honestly, their BEST is scattered across too many albums for me to attempt to choose just one. headbang

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I usually say either Mothership Connection or Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On.

... however, Funkentelechy is a strong contender because it's got the good songs and the production's better on it than what it was on Mothership or Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein. Just the listen to the drums on those two earlier records - not exactly that hard-hitting, are they? That ARP string machine being used as the main synth doesn't have the most bite either, although it does sound charming in its own way. Funkentelechy is where everything sounds like it should.

I think I prefer the earlier stuff, the 1st Funkadelic album or Maggot Brain... Or Get Up for the Downstroke. Yeah, choosing one is difficult!

Mothership Connection is the definitive masterpiece. Of course, they are all phenomenal, but my personal other fav is One Nation Under a Groove. If only it included the long version of One Nation on it. Of couse, if you are looking at all P-Funk then you have to also include Bootsy and then albums like Ahh ... the Name Is Bootsy, Baby! also come into the conversation.

Here is my personal top 10 P-Funk ...

1) Mothership Connection

2) One Nation Under a Groove

3) Clones of Dr. Funkenstein

4) Ah ... the Name Is Bootsy, Baby!

5) Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome

6) Let's Take It to the Stage

7) Motor Booty Affair

8) Maggot Brain

9) Hardcore Jollies

10) Bootsy? Player of the Year

This could easily turn into a top 20 for me.

BTW, I am still digging Shake the Gate big time (listening to it right now).

If you've got funk, you've got style.

God damn I'm glad someone said it, because I love that album too. I could never understand why it did not get its props as being the best and most consistent throwback to classic P-Funk since the demise of Parliament and Funkadelic in the early 1980s. While every other George Clinton album had at some killer cuts TAPOAFOM was the only one that totally satiated my funky soul. It is deep, not overwhelmed with hip hop, samples or loops and has lots of excellent jams. Truly lived up to its title.

I'm alsways amazed that no one ever lists it on list as favorites or even bring it up.

I really.................really dig this 1. It even has Ungle Charlie blowing on the one joint.

One of my othe Fav's of all time is Mathematics. That is a KILLER joint. "Any %tage of u, is as good as the whole Pi" (pi sign) are u kidding me...............great lyric.

Kind off topic but still related..I also loved the Axiom CD's from the 90's.."Axiom Funk"..("Shake The Gate" reminds me of this).."Zillatron-Lord Of Harvest"..."Slavemaster"..(with Micheal Hampton).."O.G.Funk" (with Billy Bass).."Mutiny" (with Jerome Brailey)..."Praxis" (with Bernie Worrell)..The diehards may not like it but it filled the P-Funk void nicely back then.

I don't think off topic, those records for sure helped keep the funk alive during George and Bootsy's lean years. And they were interesting experiments fully in line with the spirit of P-Funk.

There were standout tracks on all the discs you mention. One of my favorites is Hideous Mutant Freaks, which was done for a campy horror movie. It has all the elements of a classic P-Funk jam. My favorite from start to finish was the first Praxis set with Bootsy and Bernie. Also really liked Hardware's Third Eye Open with Stevie Salas, Bootsy and Buddy Miles. I was most disappoinited in the Michael Hampton effort, especially since I was always a huge fan of his playing in P-Funk.

But I like the Axiom Funk - Shake the Gate comparison. Gate also makes me think of Prince's Crystal Ball as a 3-CD set that is all over the map but mostly tru to the funk.

If you've got funk, you've got style.

I love "Hideous Mutant Freaks" too!..Reminded me a lot of Funkadelic circa 79-81..I dug "Third Eye"....Definetly had a strong Band Of Gypsies/hard blues rock thing going on....I think Mike wanted to get his metal guitar "ya-ya's" out on "Slavemaster"..lol...I get the "Crystal Ball" comparison too..a musical adventure. Loving "S.T.G"...Haven't stopped playing it since December...My favorite is disc 2..."Boom, There We Go Again" is definetly an old vault track that reminds of me of "Controversy".

Every album had something more than worthwhile, but "Motor Booty Affair" is the album I find myself not skipping thru any tracks. But my hands down, all time favorite P-Funk track is "Sir Nose d'Voidoffunk" from "Funkentelechy..."

Make it so, Number One...

But here's two I hadn't seen mentioned that we prolly shouldn't forget:
