Some of their stuff sounds really dated now but they have a few really stellar songs.

I actually listened to 2 of the Beck songs posted here. One was cool another I found not so cool. Haven't taken the time to listen to Garbage. The way you described them sounds similar to No Doubt.

Are u saying that art has more merit if it is produced solitarily?

I have enjoyed the works of artists who work in groups and well as those who prefer to work alone.

Kanye is a hip hop artist, the culture has always supported and promoted a collective creative process.

It's that collective element and the coming together of different ideas and perspectives into one finished piece that gives hip hop its unique flavour.

I'm commenting on his ignorant vision of an artist not respecting "Artistry"...
The difference I'm pointing out is that Beck creates a product from scratch whereas Kanye West and Beyonce are created products...
How can they be taken seriously when the art is created for them by numerous writers, producers and the use of samples of existing art when they only provide quite average input that's not even worthy of recognition?
They (especially Kanye West) claim, demand and get recognition for artistry created by other artists...

True, but Mr McDonald is obviously referring to Kanye's comment criticizing Beck's "artistry" and supposed lack of it. Artistry implies crafting, and dedicating ones time and effort towards mastering their craft. It is not easy to become a competent singer, let alone a competent singer, player of more than a dozen other instruments, songwriter producer. That shit is epically HARD and takes a lot of patience.
I understand fully what he was saying and I agree that Kanye should be criticized for saying what he said because it simply doesn't make any sense. But Michael's then dismissal of Kanye's genre or method of creating is what I take issue with. No matter what some may think, creating music - however that may be done, is still an art, and an art that can be mastered through time and effort. Kanye takes his craft very seriously and although he may be regarded as a total douchebag, he is also regarded as a brilliant artist by many of the types of people you described - the amazing singers, the songwriters, the multi instrumentalists...including Beck.

You're right.

As a musician and engineer, there is a brave new world in this contemporary era of music that allows us to create good music with ease. We have this fight amongst ourselves as musos, samples vs instruments. However, I'm here to tell you most producers use both, including Beck, who knows his way around a sampler, and has several records where he has sampled music. I bet you thats something McDonald, probably did not know about.

In the Muso World, theres really no difference to sampling and instruments.

They're just tools you use to get to the next step.

I forgive McDonalds ignorance though, cause he's just showing his age. Plus I'm pretty sure, Kanye can at least work his way around a Keyboard.

But I can't protect Kanye, cause yes he is an artist, but his self indulgence is over shadowing that. He would much rather be famous, than be an artist. So he needs to heed his own advice and respect artistry, respect his own artistry. Cause he may have 21 Grammys, but even thats not enough to cushion a falling star. Kanye really shouldve known better. Beck is pretty respected, even in the hip hop world (amongst hip hop musicians).

Kanye was protesting the racial element that play into the grammy's when choosing winners- so for her to talk down to him and call him a 'savage' for that opinion is problematic.

[Edited 2/9/15 23:38pm]

Racial element my foot. If that's kept her from winning how on earth does one explain the 17 grammys Beyonce already has? Beyond that, exactly what part of Kanye's behavior would you actually call civilized? The Grammys are voted on by members of NARAS, plenty of whom are black. I know at least 7 actively voting members, 6 of whom who are not white and they think Kanye is just as much as an uncivilzed attention whore as my black ass does. He behaves like a boorish, entitled fool and he cannot possibly expect to demand respect when he is disrespectful to others. Like his colleagues are not supposed to like what they want to like and suddenly everyone has to bow down to HIS tastes? FOH with that logic. Whether he likes it or not the award selection process is still democratic and not everyone has to bow down to the demigod mentality that is the signature of the Queen Bey brand.

Dude needs to grow up and stop giving idle threats. Artists need the exposure and international power leverage that comes from being a Grammy recipient just as much as the Grammys need them for one night of tv appearances to fill their coffers. Bitching and moaning about the Grammys but ALWAYS having their asses up there on the Grammy stage (and in some cases even singing songs that aren't their own releases. Ha!) - yet no longer want to show up at award shows from minority networks and telecasts that consistently support their "artistry"...their names are called on the regular and once the statue is brought out they are nowhere to be found, because "they couldn't be here tonight!". Kanye can miss me with his entitled foolery come hypocrisy falsely veiled as indignation.

I wasn't aware that the award was for "Artists who can play the most instruments." I thought it was simply called "ALBUM OF THE YEAR." Whether it took a team of producers, writers, engineers, sound mixers, etc., etc. is irrelevent. Some 90s refugee doesn't get default points because he may have created an album with a banjo, noise makers, off-rhythm finger snaps or whatever the hell he did.

But congrats to Beck for coming out of near obscurity and nabbing an award for a phantom album that damn near no one heard or even knew existed before Grammy night. Wonder how much of a sales spike he saw after. I imagine anything probably would have been significant boost from the week before.

People are only mentioning Beck's ability to play multiple instruments and his songwriting because of Kanye's dumbass quote about respecting artistry. Duh, you don't have to be a multi-instrumentalist to win AOTY. Kanye's the one coming in with the snobbery in the first place.

Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong, and you sound like nothing but a misinformed hater. Beck is regularly discussed in the music press, both in print and online, mainstream, indie and underground.

That 90s refuge was nominated for album of the year in 2001, had FIVE albums nominated for Best Alternative Album between 2000 and 2009 (amonst other nominations and wins), and has sold 3.5 million albums since 2000.

He's produced records for Charlotte Gainsbourg, Thurston Moore and Stephen Malkmus (amongst others).

In 2009, using the professional studio built at his house he founded the Record Club, where a group of musicians would get together and cover (re-interprate and re-record) an entire album and post videos of the work on YouTube.

Since 2000 he has collaborated with Air, Marianne Faithful, Pear Jam, Macy Gray, Pink, Sia, Jamie Lidell, Tobacco, The Lonely Island and Phillip Glass (amongst others).

In 2013 he released Song Reader, an albums worth of songs written specifically for and released as sheet music. Even though he never recorded any of the songs himself, it still made year end "Best Of" lists. The songs were in turn recorded by HUNDREDS of artists, famous and unknown, and uploaded to YouTube and the Song Reader website.

He's also a painter and visual artist.

Lastly, the album that won this year is really fucking good. You not being aware of that fact doesn't change it.

He has never ventured anywhere near obscurity. Much like Kanye, your ignorant tirade says far more about you than it does Beck. Beck is in fact the exact opposite of what Kanye TRIED to portray him as, which is no doubt why he backtracked on his statement about "respecting artistry" with a quickness (even if he only did so after people close to him were like, "uhh, no dude, not really", which is very much what I suspect happened).

Not only the musicianship is remarkable, the production and engineering is outstanding. I listened to this album in Lossless at the recording studio I work in here in Sydney, and was flabbergasted. You can hear DYNAMICS! Its no wonder it also won best engineered album. It wasn't squashed to death. You can hear swells, crecendo and diminuendos. All my mixing and mastering friends pretty much said the samething. It was a new bench mark in engineering a record, harkening back to pre 80's mixing, before everything was squashed and thumped to death by compression.

I agree about the engineering of Morning Phase 100% and was very pleased to see it also won that grammy. His albums have always been well engineered, but his accoustic work in particular really does breathe and have real life to it.
