Is This Song A Hip Hop Miracle? I've been impressed by J Cole ever since he debuted his bolt of lightening song "Who Dat". Cole is an army brat who graduated from college with some pretty impressive credentials, and for that he gets less respect in some circles for not being enough from the streets. But his story telling style intrigues me, and even more impressive he produces himself, eliminating the middle man that could hinder the progress of a lesser artist. But when I hear "Apparently" on the radio it's like the heavens open up and genius and authenticity shine through. Is "Apparently" the mircale modern hip hop has been waiting for? >

I like J. Cole too. But again... way better hip-hop artists out there. You really like to hype up these threads huh? do you listen to one song and thnk it's saving a genre or generation? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

impressive first introduction to J. Cole. i've heard good things and was midly intrigued (same with kendrick), but i stopped fuckin' with hip hop a long time ago (long story). i only hear what becomes inescapably ubiquitious. i must say his profanity and use of the n-word seem gratuitious and speak to what Cinny alluded to as it relates to his attemtps at "street cred" given his "intellect". I immediately thought of lauryn hill's line, where she says.."then i add a muthafucka so you iggnant n**gas hear me. i HATE that ish!
i'm like, if you're going to be "deep/quasi-spiritual" do so unapologetically, don't straddle. that's the type of duplicity i find bothersome. glad to know something like this is on the radio, although i'll never hear it (radio sucks monkey balls) and while its a contrast to the other stuff on, again, his lack of surety of his convictions will only cause its moments of "depth" to be fleeting at best. | |

> If you're vaguely familiar with my thread style you know hyperbole is my middle name. But not for nothing. I always attempt to be firmly behind a subject I'm presenting. Given that, true, I could stand to listen to more stuff and I feel my tastes are pretty diverse, moreso than your average listener. But I have slowed down with age and have settled into my habits, alas my tendancy to STILL listen to the radio from time to time.
