I'll start it off since I don't see it being discussed yet...
I really liked last night's Rick James Unsung and didn't expect to. What I liked was all of the footage they had of him throughout his entire career. I still enjoy seeing old footage of anyone performing on Soul Train but I didn't know, until last night, that there's video (good quality video at that) of Rick's 1981 Live In Long Beach performance. Also, the footage over the closing credits of him singing/riffing on the acoustic guitar was cool as hell- Rick was the man.
On a side note, some of the old interview footage was also interesting. Best old Rick quote (and I'm paraphrasing from memory since I saw this early on last night): "Me and groups of women? First off, how many women are we talking about? A limo-full of women or a van-full of women?"
Again, Rick was the man!
Other random notes:
-I didn't know there was a video for "Give It To Me, Baby" until last night. I can see why MTV never played it and it's not because he was "too black".
-After reading about it for so many years, it was really cool to finally hear a tune that he made when he was in the band with Neil Young.

Rick James was a true luminary. He was always like an uncle. Street Songs was one of the greatest albums of all time. I always felt Prince's landmark album Purple Rain wad influenced by Rick's album. Rick James was a strong opponent of sampling

I bought that Super Freak dvd several years ago. They talked about his final Motown albums being failures and his lawsuits with Motown. I actually liked Glow and The Flag better than Wonderful. Rick was so done with Motown and vice versa Motown didn't give a shit about promoting the Flag. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
