RIP Mr. Crouch. Andrae Crouch was a lot of pop stars go to guy for their gospel-tinged songs. Michael Jackson and Madonna were among many: - GRAMMY-WINNING GOSPEL ARTIST DIES AT 72 - January 08, 2015 -- 6:46 pm PST
-
GRAMMY-winning gospel artist Andraé Crouch died Jan. 8 after suffering a heart attack. He was 72. California native Crouch was noted for combining classic gospel music elements with pop songwriting techniques and production. In the '60s he formed his first gospel group, Andrae Crouch & The Disciples, with whom he released albums such as This Is Another Day, which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Gospel Performance for 1976. Crouch earned seven GRAMMYs throughout his career, including Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for 1994's Mercy. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley and Paul Simon, and he served as the vocal arranger for recording sessions with Michael Jackson, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Diana Ross, and Ringo Starr, among others. In 2005 Crouch was among the honorees at The Recording Academy's inaugural GRAMMY Salute To Gospel Music. His most recent studio album, The Journey, was released in 2011 and peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Gospel Albums chart. - Here is his last hit record featuring one of my favorite singers, Marvin Winans: - - - - - He and Mike did a lot of stuff together. In 1987, the Andraé Crouch Choir sang background vocals along with Siedah Garrett, Glen Ballard, and The Winans on Jackson's hit single "Man in the Mirror" from the Bad album. The Andraé Crouch Singers were also featured on the songs "Keep the Faith" and "Will You Be There" from Jackson's 1991 Dangerous album. Andraé and Sandra also did the choir arrangement for those songs. On Jackson's HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I project in 1995, the Andraé Crouch Choir chants climactically in a dramatic interaction with Jackson on "Earth Song." Crouch's composition, "Soon and Very Soon" was performed at the public memorial service for Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. - - Once Madonna and Leonard finished writing the lyrics of "Like a Prayer", they decided to record it alongside a choir at the end of 1988.[5][10] He wanted to have a quick recording session for the song, as he believed that not much work would be needed for it.[5] Madonna and Leonard met with musician Andraé Crouch and a member of his management team/vocalist Roberto Noriega and signed his choir as one of the background vocalists. Since Crouch was the leader of the Los Angeles Church of God choir, he researched the lyrics of the song, as he wanted to "find out what the intention of the song might be. We're very particular in choosing what we work with, and we liked what we heard."[11] At Jonny Yuma recording studio, Crouch got his choir together and explained to them what they needed to do during the recording session.[5] He had listened to the demo of "Like a Prayer" in his car, and directed his choir according to his own interpretations of the music. The choir was recorded separately, and Leonard wanted it to be added during post-production of the song.[5]

I don't remember Prince being in the audience @ the 1988 Grammy's.... - He cracks me up around the 6:47 mark after Michael's performance... - Probably thinking to himself, "Why he lip sync half his performance though?"

Ahhh, dang! As I was leaving the house this morning, I was quickly channel surfing and saw a brief retro clip of him on some religious show. I thought they were going to interview him or something. Now I realize it was a story about his passing. I grew up on his music. One of the greatest gospel musicians ever! [Edited 1/9/15 17:00pm] "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! RIP Andrae, such a sad day for Gospel music and choral work. Although I am not a fan of this Genre, I really respect his work and as a Michael Jackson fan - they made beautiful music together. When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

May he rest in peace...I hope The GRAMMYS is planning a Gospel segment @ this year's ceremony...Andrea was a Founding Father of Contemporary Gospel Music..."Let the Church Say Amen" is CLASSIC Crouch and who better to sing Lead than Marvin Winans from The Winans Dynasty...

- That would be nice and even appropriate but I won't be holding my breath. I can remember the last time the Grammys featured any gospel artist during their live telecast.

Remember when the GRammys opened the show with the Aretha "Get well" Tribute? I thought they also did a Gospel segment during the show...One year I remember Karen Clark Sheared and maybe Yolonda doing something...I can't remember...The lineup they got performing this year is pretty-much a Snoozefest..They should be glad to throw in Gospel segment....I'm still surprised Aretha wasnt nominated for her "Divas Tribute" CD just so she can perform or sit in the audience....

- I don't remember the Aretha tribute but I know its more of a rarity now for them to feature a gospel segment during their live show. Like other sub-genres, the Gospel awards are usually handed out before the show even airs live later that night.
