I was only becoming aware of certain personalities (as opposed to their work), but Parliament-Funkadelic/Kiss/Marvin Gaye/The Beatles were probably the acts that first really seized my attention

1980-1984

Michael Jackson

1984-1991

Prince

1991-1993

Joni Mitchell

1993-2001

Dead Can Dance/Meshell Ndegeocello/Vanessa Daou

2001>

I've been a free agent smile In recent years, though, I'd say Jose Gonzalez (and his band Junip), XTC, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Goldfrapp have come to take up most of my listening time.

Birth-1984/5 (musical influences pretty much dominated by what my family listened to)

1985-1988 (started developing a love for american music, my father bought me a Kenny Rogers tape that I used to listen to a lot, and Pointer Sisters, Hall & Oats, Dolly Parton, MJ, Prince, Billy Ocean.. its was really random, but I loved all of them) - Prince was the one that really stood out above the rest for me which is how I became a fan

1989-1993 - a dominican artist named Raulin Rodriguez

1994-1998 - Cocteau Twins (second mention to Dead Can Dance, goth music, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Bjork, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Leonard Cohen)

1999-2004 (started listening to more reggaeton, r&b, latin rap, acidjazz, trip-hop, Laura Nyro, Kate Bush, Meshell Ndegeocello, house music, ambient music), but I became a fanatic of Peter Murphy during this phase

2005-Present (started listening to more brazilian artists like Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown, german artists, french, belgian music because I was moving countries a lot) but I'd say the donminant person in the past ten years is probably Lenine (who's a brazilian musician/singer)

Change it one more time..

1983 - Michael Jackson - Like for many people, it was his appearance on Motown25 that started the mania. That lasted for around a year until I saw the first trailer for Purple Rain on TV.

1984 - Prince - I'm on the org. What else is there to say, really?

1989 - Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814 proved Control wasn't a fluke and Janet would have a long, fruitful relationship with producers Jam & Lewis.

1991 - Siouxsie & The Banshees - I got the Peepshow album late--around 89/90, but it was only after Superstition in 1991 when I realized I needed to have everything by this band.

1994 - Tori Amos - Little Eartquakes left me stunned. Then I saw Tori live during the Under The Pink tour and sought out all her b-sides.

2005 - Goldfrapp - I saw them live on the Black Cherry tour a few years earlier, but the Supernature album is when I really fell for them.

2010 - Dum Dum Girls - Almost everything Dee Dee touches (which includes a long list of side-projects) is gold to me.

My mamas records: old country, like dolly parton, George jones, Freddie fender, willie Nelson

Growing up: I was a mixed bag, r&b and easy listening ie Stevie wonder, ew&f, Rick James, cat Stevens, Elton John, Donna summer.

Teenage years I discover rap: run dmc, whodini, fat boys, public enemy

somewhere around 84 I discovered Prince. Had to have his back catalog. Been on this ride ever since.

George Michael , guns and roses, kid rock, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Garth brooks have had their moments. To name a few.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Cool thread.

Dominated? Hmm, that's kinda a hard one. For the most part, from 79-89, Prince dominated my musical world. There were a quite a few artists who came in second though.

73(when i was 6) to around 76-77

Music that my parents listened to plus music that i started to seek out( from my parent's and older siblings collections) and play on my own.

BB king, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye(big time), O'Jays'(bt) The Temptations, Barry White(my mom loved that man), Isaac Hayes, Spinners(bt), Al Green, The Isley brothers(bt), Stevie wonder(bt), The Ohio Players(bt), Slave, Funkadellic/Parliament, and Earth Wind and Fire.

77 -79

Rick James, Funkadellic, Parliament, Prince, Slave, Todd Rundgren, Fleetwood Mac, and Cameo

80-83

Prince, The Time, Michael Jackson, Rick James, Cameo, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash Furious 5, Sugar Hill Gang, RUN DMC, Slave, Whodini, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, New Wave, Disco, AM-FM Radio music

83-89

Prince, The Time, Public Enemy, Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Exodus, Slayer, Ronnie James Dio, Killing Joke, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Sade, Kraftwerk, and Steely Dan

90-2000

Prince, Killing Joke, Steely Dan, Nirvana, The Wipers, G funk, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Return to Forever, the Orb, and Frank Zappa.

2000-2010

Prince, Killing Joke, Todd Rundgren, all genres of heavy metal, obscure pop, punk, post punk, industrial, soul, funk, soft rock, and basically any type of music that's pre 1989.

2010-2015

Basically the same as 2000-2010 except with a little less heavy metal and prince,
and a lot more obscure-weird stuff, and 70's soft rock.

That was pretty damn hard ! Sorry about the overlaps.

SuperSoulFight
er

Nice question!
The acts who "dominated" what I listened to are simply the ones who made a lot of albums. My first LP was Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby which led to James Brown, Prince, P-funk. That'll keep you busy for a while especially because all those funk bands started touring in the 90s.
And if there's no tour or no new stuff, as with TTD, Sly Stone, or the late Marvin Gaye, then you buy the albums, like 'em, but how many times can you listen to the same album before you want to hear something else?
I always liked the blues too so in the early 2000s I was digging The Rolling Stones and these days it's mostly Bob Dylan, once again someone who still tours and makes albums.
Hmmm. I do notice a shift from "jams" to "songs"...

LOL....like I said, you guys gotta realize that back in the olden days music was literally ALL we had, not to mention, there was so much variety.

It was a huge deal just to get your hands on a dollar so you could run down the street to the record store to buy the latest '45. biggrin

Then all your friends would come over to listen. You had to sit next to the record player so you could play the record over and over....no remote controls.

I was 7 years old in 1981; the first songs that I remember being obsessesd with were Prince's "Controversy" and The Stray Cats' "Stray Cat Strut" (dont remember which was first), then George Clinton's "Atomic Dog". Once Prince dropped the "1999" album, it was all over. Prince (and the entire Minneapolis scene) dominated my stereo until the early 90s. Then I went backwards...I grooved to West Coast Hip Hop (and Public Enemy) until Snoop's first album dropped in 1994, but I spent most of my time digging thru my father's record collection studying James Brown, Sly Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, Curtis Mayfield and all that. My parents sent me to an all-white high school...and i discovered the Beatles, the Doors, Led Zeppelin and all the roots reggae out of Jamaica (and I'm still stunned that it was white folks that turned me on to Bob Marley, Eek-A-Mouse, Gregory Isaacs, etc). I came to the realization that the Beatles were cool, The Doors were the BEST, Led Zeppelin is still my definition of what rock n roll is supposed to sound like, and there is nothing better to make you smile than RASTA. So...Prince - Hip Hop - Old School Pimp Shit - Classic Rock/Reggae. Now? Prince and the Minneapolis Scene, P-Funk, The Doors, Curtis Mayfield, RASTA.

Make it so, Number One...

earliest stuff I listened to regularily was from Beatles, ELO, Queen and Olivia Newton John and yes, I stll love those old records smile

then slowly Soul/Funk took over almost completely, in the beginning mainly represented by Earth Wind & Fire (kickoff was Fantasy and All'n'All) and Stevie Wonder

and "dominating" meant anxiously awaiting every new release while getting all their back catalouge step by step

and they still are my two favourite artists beside Prince

the next few years there was no escaping Michael Jackson of course, and "dominate" indeed he did, goddamn , I even had the Fairwell My Summer Love poster hanging in my room lol boxed

Prince came sneaking in slowly, Controversy was the first album I got but he didn't "dominate" yet. that happened with 1999 which I thought was the bomb, so I bought all his older albums, and then suddenly Purple Rain exploded on the pop charts. his "domination" was longer and stronger than from any other artist, meaning absoultely crazy about collecting bootlegs, 12-inches, b-sides...

pretty much at the same time and for many years to come Hip Hop took center place, the dawning of a new era, then the golden age of Hip Hop, Yo! MTV raps and all of that... the most exciting era in music I could witness live.. and too many artists to choose from, starting with Sugarhill, Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, then Run DMC, Marely Marl, Eric B & Rakim, Ice Cube, De La Soul and countless, countless others.. so rather the genre was dominating my music world, but if I'd have to pick some, then I would name Public Enemy as the main dominating artist

at the same time (partially thanks to sampling in Hip Hop) I explored many older artists, most importantly P-Funk and James Brown and replaced my greatest hits collections with all the original albums from the catalouge I could get my hands on

also over the years I slowly grew more and more into Jazz and as honorable mention I have to point out Count Basie, besides Prince probably the artist with the most albums/CDs in my collection

I was born in the 60s so you don't have to tell me how things were back in the day before cable, video games and mobile phones since I lived through those dark ages as well.

My post was more of an observation that for many people apparently, there was no one performer who became a priority above all others which is how I interpreted the original question.

No offense. Thanks for the clarification.

For me the artists I listed did dominate my musical universe though. We really did live and breathe music for the most part, besides Star Trek and the odd game of dodge ball... lol

I think of it more as the golden age in a way, rather than the dark ages though. Especially musically.

Anyway, since you are a sixties baby there must have been some act you were digging before MJ?

I can see why my timeline beginning at 1983 would make it appear that I was younger than I actually am. smile

I got into music rather late and was more a TV junkie in the 70s. I could watch TV all day back then if allowed. I did have a stack of 7"s by The Sylvers, Rose Royce, etc. but while I really liked the individual songs, I never developed a love for the artists as a whole. However, the one album that did become my whole world for awhile was the Grease movie soundtrack. I couldn't get enough of the movie and the album for years.
