Billboard Compares Katy Perry’s ‘Prism’ Era To Michael Jackson’s ‘Dangerous

There are only two artists in music history to lift five Hot 100 #1s from a single LP – Michael Jackson and Katy Perry. Via their ‘Bad’ and ‘Teenage Dream’ albums respectively, the duo launched a quintet of chart-toppers to the coveted tally on the hems of awe-inspiring music videos and very dedicated fanbases.

Jackson’s iconic hits spent a collective 7 weeks atop the charts while Perry’s forgettable modern pop offerings spent nearly triple that time reigning. But, while the latter has his name etched in history books as the ‘King of Pop,’ Billboard thought it time to remind fans that this pop princess’s impressive sales performance is by no means anything to downplay.

Indeed, it’s no secret that her domination of today’s charts knows few rivals. But, just as the diva’s takeover of Superbowl XLIX’s halftime show approaches, the music Bible stacked up the pop titans’ follow-up records, ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Prism’ to see how well they compare to their respective preceding releases as well as each other’s.

Weigh in below:

Michael Jackson’s Five #1s from ‘Bad’

  • “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Dirty Diana,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”

Katy Perry’s Five #1s from ‘Teenage Dream’

  • “California Girls, “”Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night”

How do their follow-ups stack up?

A terrible comparison.

MJ took huge artistic risks with Dangerous. He moved away from working with Quincy. He jumped head-first into making exciting, groundbreaking cutting edge urban pop via Teddy Riley and the new jack swing sound. He expanded his songwriting horizon, tackling social issues and racism on tracks like "Why You Wanna Trip On Me" and "Black or White".

Now, as for Katy - I have to give her props. Because "Teenage Dream" is an utterly fantastic pop record. It's packed with killer hook after killer hook, and the production is spot-on. It's no wonder it had so many hits.

But I was disappointed in "Prism". With "Teenage Dream" I liked every song, and loved a lot of them. With "Prism" I liked a handful, and loved maybe one or two. It just doesn't stack up. And none of it breaks any new ground for her, or in general. It's more of the same as "Teenage Dream", but just nowhere near as good.

More asspull comparisons I see. Don't the people who write these articles realize that the only thing they're doing is make people want to hear the older music more and therefore, accomplish the opposite of what their articles try to do?

This reminds me of the ridiculous comparison between 1989 and RN 1814 as well for having "1989" in common as well.

And Katy Perry sucks, her hooks weren't all that, they were alright. Wide Awake and TGIF were the only ok ones

I think all they're trying to say is it's only a flop compared to her own record (hey, double meaning).

You can't be serious, Teenage Dream is one of the catchiest hooks I've ever heard. Same with California Gurls and Firework.

Well first Billboard really has nothing better to write about than dragging out past era's because this era has struggling so much.

But it also has to be looked at the huge disconect from singles to album, with almost everyone it just doesnt translate to album sales anymore, unless your Taylor Swift, Katy can have a ton of number ones from an album and looking at that in ANY other era that would translate into EPIC album, I mean is Teenage Dream an EPIC album? or just filled with singles?
