Van Hunt announces new album is done! Releases album outtake "Music Is A World Within Itself"

Via Van Hunt's Pledge Music page, he announced today that his new album is done. He also put out an mp3 download of a song that didn't make the cut. It's a gritty, funky, sick, cover/mash-up of mainly Stevie Wonders "Sir Duke" and Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger", which is titled "Music Is World Within Itself". You can download the song on his pledge music page when you pre-order the new album.

http://www.pledgemusic.co...ts/vanhunt

Amazon.com is also listing a new song (presumably the lead single) called "Vega (stripes on)" and has a Januray 27th release date.

They both make Prince look like the brain-dead fool that he is. To me, Prince is now little more than a circus clown. Just a short funny little circus clown.

This is a pretty bad argument, Laura. You can think less of an artist and still participate at

a message board dedicated to the same artist. I'm the perfect example: I think Van Hunt

has surpassed Prince and D'Angelo musically and I think Prince hasn't said anything interesting
since 1987, but I still post here.

I won't go as far as to claim that Prince is a joke (he's not) but on the other hand, he's not
pushing the boundaries of pop music like he used to.

As for sales, they speak only to the popularity of an artist, not to the quality of that artist's
music in and of itself. There are a ton of hip hop emcees who went platinum off of vapidness;
there are tons of pop musicians who've written masterpieces that sold "five" copies. Sells
does not instantly give us an indication of how well written something is.

____________________________________________________________________________

Anywhoo....I'm very excited about a new Van Hunt album. Like I said, he's a much more inter-
esting songwriter than Prince or D'Angelo at the moment. I would go as far to say that Van
Hunt is the best R&B songwriter alive today and in the top ten of pop songwriters currently walk-
ing God's green earth. And in my opinion, Popular is just as good as Parade.

Maybe you have not been on the board lately but this person I am responding to post negative crap all the time. It is to the point were I think questioning his need to come to this board is valid.

Prince is pushing boundaries since the recent change in his sound has caused great critical reviews much controversy among his fan base and a CD in the RnB top ten. It is his answer to the plastic sound that is favored by younger artist and I think he handed them their ass.

I do not think sales has anything to do with quality but many people do on this board and they are the first to mention that AOA is not a hugh seller despite all the variables that are working against him like age, overall horrible music sales, and the lack of radio airplay.

I think other artist who receive undue praise for their work should be held to the same standard (which they never are on this board ).

I actually like Van Hunt but he cannot hold P's jock strap as a musical talent and has even less of chance of selling millions of records than Prince has.

That is reality and some people on this board need a dose.

Neither Prince nor Van Hunt is going to sell millions of copies of new albums. But there's little doubt that Van Hunt's new album will push more boundaries and be more musically accomplished than whatever turd Prince pinches out next. Even the song Van contributed to the AfroPunk compilation is more experimental than anything Prince has done since TGE.

Well, I can push boundaries that have never been pushed before. But will it be listenable, danceable? Absolutely not.

All I care about at this point is if a song makes me snap my fingers, tap my feet, and sing along with it. Boundaries are for young people.

I'm excited too; Van is one of the more prominent artistic talents out there, in any genre. His songwriting is full of wit, grit, absurdity, whimsy, humor and grief, and sometimes in a single song. Like Prince, his influences are evident do not overwhelm his distinctive sound. Those are the types of artists I follow.

I think Me'Shell gave Van a run for his money songwriting-wise during her prime.

Aha, I see what we are differing on! You are confusing pop music with "art".

While pop music is a form of art, it isn't the kind of "art" that lends itself to an abstract form. Painting, for instance, has boundaries that can be pushed. Sculpting does too.

But pop music doesn't because by definition, it has to be something that the masses will buy ("pop" stands for "popular"). The boundaries of pop music are pretty well-defined. The challenge is making music within those boundaries that people will enjoy.

If you want boundary-pushing in your music, I'd suggest jazz or EDM.

Laura, there is no way that you can sit down and listen to a recent Prince cd and say, with a
straight face, that he's pushing boundaries. Stop it, right now. You are not assessing his music
critically, but stanistically; i.e., you're kinda being a stan. You cannot point to any new music
Prince has released that isn't a retread, rehash, or reimagining of the work he did when he was
pushing the boundaries of what R&B was supposed to be (1982-1987). This is the five year period
where his songwriting, album production, and musical imagination were functioning optimally. I
defy you to name any album after 1987 that is musically superior to Parade or Sign O' The Times.

The fact that many people on this board equate album sales with quality only reflects that this
board is frequented by retards and nitwits. Don't fall for that lazy, half-baked argument.

And I won't get into a Van Hunt vs Prince in terms of musical talent debate with you (one cannot
really quantify talent; and it's entirely subjective, so whatever) but the notion that he hasn't any
chance to sell a million records (as if that is a linchpin of quality music) is not a sign that Van
Hunt sucks; or that he sucks worse than Prince. It just indicates that Van Hunt is a niche artist
while Prince has a wider appeal. Stop rating musicians as to who has more talent and let's start
talking about what they do with that talent. As far as I'm concerned, I'd much rather listen to Van
Hunt speak musically in 2015 than I would Prince; he's more interesting. Whatever it is Prince is
doing these days, he did better back in the 80s; you know it, I know it, and he knows it.

I'm not sure I agree with Me'Shell giving Hunt a run for his money in the songwriting arena, but
she's going down the same artistic path he is: innovation that successfully builds upon R&B roots
and influences.

The opinion I have on Parade and Popular is not that one album reminds me of the other one
musically. Instead, the similarities exists solely in that each album best encapsulates a recording
artist producing a perfect pop album.

You haven't heard all of Popular yet? Check out "Ur Personal Army." That is an example of Van
Hunt's songwriting prowress; he uses polychordalism so smartly. This is something that I think
Me'Shell and other songwriters cannot do these days. It takes talent, a great ear, and a bit of
music theory to know what you are doing when you write so urbanely.
