Going by this logic, then symphony orchestras, free jazz performers, and polka bands are at "the bottom" since those genres and many more don't get hit records, Top 40 radio play, or a lot of media attention. Most people who do music for a living and release records have never gotten huge sales but manage to have an audience. Look at the types of acts who play ancient music at Renaissance Faires. People buy their CDs at the festivals. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

JZone said: TLC has a Kickstarter to raise $150,000 to record an album? That's their recording budget for 2015? Will they sell it at Sam Goody too?

As of Thursday night, they had raised more than $197K, surpassing their initial fundraising goal of $150,000.

They also made Wendy Williams, who made fun of their fundraising goal eat crow. She later apologized for her underestimating them.
Even I'm guilty of underestimating their power. I thought it would have taken much longer. I'm very proud of their accomplishment. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! I wouldn't be surprised if they hit $500k. Amanda Palmer raised $1.2 mill on Kickstarter for her last album. |

They're getting more publicity this way than had they resigned with another major label. Plus they're getting their fans aboard from the start. I would wait to see how this plays out before putting them down for going this route. A definitely happening new TLC album is something to be excited about either way I think!

The really dont need a label at this point, if this is the be all end for them, they have the NAME already, they have a tour with NKOTB so there is going to be an audience, and there is no real loss here, this will probably be the most lucrative thing ever for them which is sad considering WITH a label they sold zillions of albums and made very little. Well its not like they are going to have to pay a band? Recording costs now are wasted mostly on paying 50 songwriters to come up with "bug a boo" and slap some beats on it, but word is out that you can do all of this type of recording REALLY cheap, and if you fuck up throw it out. Now if TLC wanna go the route of paying timbaland or pharrell 100,000 a beat then they are wasting money. What if it's a bad album? I donate money and then later don't like what I hear. Do I get a refund? "Janet Jackson is like an 80s sitcom that's been off the air for over 25 years; you see a rerun and realize it wasn't that great..."

No, you get to keep your copy.

I get to keep a bad album I don't want, subsequently wasted money on and will probably never listen to again?! Gee.
I was a fan of TLC during their heyday, but in the time since they lost Left Eye (who was the creative muse and uber lively personality of the group), they've aged into their mid 40s, their last album 13 years ago wasn't that good and to my knowledge haven't even confirmed who they'd be working for that "TLC sound" that they're trying to sell here. So skeptical I am. In 1997, perhaps I would have been naive enough to throw good faith money at them, but in 2015, not so much. If this album comes to fruition, I'll listen and then decide if it's worth buying. sorry but this just seems tacky to me especially having other artists 'donating' like they are a charity case.i hope none of my favorites ever do this, im not funding nobody's album, if i like the music i will buy the finished product.

I read that TLC actually hit $200k to be the fastest ever Kickstarter to reach their goal. You can't tell people how to use their money!

Yeah I had heard that one before too but apparently TLC is the latest-fastest to do it.

I don't get why people think it is "charity" to have people preorder an album so its recording costs can be paid for. There are still some artists whose new album I'll buy the day it comes out without listening beforehand. If I can increase the artist's financial health, I don't have a problem with that.

If Ron Fair is going to be involved and he's in a leadership role at Virgin Records, then I don't see why that label doesn't sign them...or at the very least act as their distributor. I hope that this isn't some rinky dink indepedent release that is only available online. Single's I've reconciled, but I can't abide by whole albums on phones and iPods. I need a physical CD. Executive producer on an indie project? Help me understand, so far this sounds industry-backed.

WHY does this next one have to be their "last" album??? I know many people agree that the band is nothing without Left-Eye, but what if she had done her solo album, lived, and saw it be such a success - she left TLC altogether? I'd like to think the ladies would have all gone their own ways and periodically reunited (like Destiny's Child), as each one was unique and talented. But why not just be Chili and T? I still think there is room for them in the musical landscape - and they could be a mature duet group, one who's been through rough times - aged with beauty - and evolved. I don't like the notion it will be their FINAL album...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This isn't a popular opinion, but I think they could have easily continued as a group without Left-Eye.It's not like she rapped on every track, anyway.Or they could have hired another female rapper (DaBrat, perhaps?) and carried on.I remember Left-Eye made some comments, suggesting that she wasn't happy being in the group anyway.
