Janet Jackson's Lost Track

As you know, this track was dropped for no apparent reason from Damita Jo.

Any insiders with any info on who wrote/produced/played on this? It sure doesn's sound like Jimmy and Terry's production.

And was this ever performed live?

Its on the asian versions of the album.

“It means finding the very human narrative of a man navigating between idealism and pragmatism, faith and politics, non- violence, the pitfalls of acclaim as the perils of rejection” - Lesley Hazleton on the first Muslim, the prophet.

"The Beat Of Black Wings"

I met a young soldier
He said his name was Killer Kyle
He was shakin' all over
Like a night-frightened child
This is his story
It's a tough one for me to sing
Hard as the squawk and the flap
And the beat of--the beat of black wings

"They gave me a gun," he said
"They gave me a mission
For the power and the glory--
Propaganda--piss on 'em
There's a war zone inside me--
I can feel things exploding--
I can't even hear the fucking music playing
For the beat of--the beat of black wings."

He said, "I never had nothin'--
Nothin' I could believe in
My girl killed our unborn child
Without even grievin'!
I put my hands on her belly
To feel the kid kickin'--damn!
She'd been to some clinic
Oh--the beat of black wings."

"They want you--they need you--
They train you to kill--
To be a pin on some map--
Some vicarious thrill--
The old hate the young
That's the whole heartless thing
The old pick the wars
We die in 'em
To the beat of--the beat of black wings."

There's a man drawing pictures
On the sidewalk with chalk
Just as fast as he draws 'em
Rain come down and wash 'em off
"Keep the drinks comin' girl
'Til I can't feel anything
I'm just a chalk mark in a rainstorm
I'm just the beat of black wings."

I think it was on the promo, but left off the album. I have the Japanese version of Damita Jo. The bonus tracks are "I'm Here" and "Put Your Hands On".

I wish they would have put "Could This Be Love" on the album. They jacked that album up.

Any info on who wrote/produced the track? Some people reported that Janet performed it live ocassionally. This song is not even on iTunes.

I don't really want to assume who produced it but the song gives a strong Jimmy and Terry sound that they worked with at the time.

LOVE this unreleased track. Some of the unreleased Damita Jo tracks are better than a couple of the cuts that made the album.

Never heard that song until now and now I think I'm convinced Jimmy and Terry also produced Could This Be Love. It sounds almost like they're using the same basic tracks!

The Beat of Black Wings is a Joni Mitchell song.
Give her version a listen

One of my favorite unreleased tracks from her. They truly dropped the ball with omitting that one! mad biggrin Probably highlights her voice better than a lot of songs released as singles later (i.e. So Excited). Her soulful ad libs are on point too toward the end. The BGV's are on point as always with her (Especially on the chorus, check it out with decent headphones). I don't know what Rich Harrison did to get this out of her but it worked. I would be interested to hear what they could come up with again. I think I remember reading somewhere that it was left off because "people" thought it sounded too similiar to Jennifer Lopez "Get Right" or some other stuff he had out at the time. Again, whatever the reason was....I disagree.

She sounds okay on that second song, better than most DJ tracks, but pale in comparison to earlier works. Could This Be Love is good, should have been on the actual album and a single. Rich Harisson did well with her on Pops Up and Clap Your Hands

"Clap Your Hands" was hot! Great energy. Another good vocal performance. She usually sounds good with her upper register sung in full voice...

I think I like "What Can I Say" and "Clap Your Hands" the most from her unreleased sessions with Rich Harrison. The problem I think she had with him is lack of diversity in his sound. In other words, a lot of his stuff sounds alike. Especially his arrangements. Just think of Kelly Rowland's "Can't Nobody", Jennifer Lopez "Get Right" and some of Amerie's old stuff and then these tracks from Janet.

It's definitely a nod to producers like Dilla, Poyser, Duplaix, etc.

wow. i'm usually defending or singin' Jan's praises but all three of these tracks are pretty unremarkable and wouldn't have enhanced the uneven (but not as bad as some would have you believe) projects they were dropped from. good editing.

You know, even if we can't get a new album from Janet, I would love a compilation of outtakes like these posted tracks, or deluxe remasters. Look, we missed the 10th anniversary of Damita Jo!
