Will the newest Las Vegas headliner be a former American Idol judge rather than a current one?
There's been much speculation that Jennifer Lopez was in talks to have her own residence at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Sin City, and those rumors seemed confirmed after Lopez did a New Year's Eve show at the venue. However, the Las Vegas Sun reports that a Lopez residency isn't going to make financial sense for the venue, and so executives are eyeing Mariah Carey as a possible replacement.
A Caesars Entertainment official commented that Lopez wanted too much money to do 30 shows a year at the Colosseum, and that the company would never be able to make it a profit. "There's no way the numbers can work out for a residency with just 4,000 seats. She's an arena act now, but hopefully one day she'll see the advantages of staying put in one place for less money than touring", added the official. Rumors now are flying that Mariah will be announced as the Colosseum's new headlining act.
Her presence at the venue will help fill the empty dates vacated by Celine Dion, who put her showbiz career on hold last year to care for her husband, Rene Angelil, who is battling throat cancer.
The Mariah announcement will come in two weeks. Stay tuned.
I really think that Mariah needs a break. She's been through so much this year. And with the rumors of her being an alcoholic this will not fair well in the end. She needs to take some time off and take care of herself and her precious babies. I wish her well. The media has given her a hard time lately.
Jlo on the other hand is out of her damn mind mind. She's always wanting to much money. Like who the hell does she think she is? She can't sing! She's a mediocre dancer. And is rule as hell! I'm glad they didn't sign her overhyped overpaid ass! Did anybody even watch her HBO special?
It could work if she's willing to put in the time and discipline to keep her voice in shape. But like you and others have said, she needs to take some time off to get her life in order so she can be there for her children. After she gets herself settled, then she needs to get in vocal shape for a possible residency. Otherwise, she'll just embarass herself like Whitney Houston did just before she died.
If I were Mariah,I'd be pissed that they want me to do this as a "replacement" for J-Lo (someone who can't even really sing) why didn't they approach Mariah first?

I Love MiMi but the Vegas Gig could ONLY work if she could do 2 to 3 shows a week...Mariah can't handle 5 to 7 shows a week....These younger artists can't do what the Old Vegas legends could do...Even Celine has LOST some of her upper Register becuz of the weekly grind...The Money is AMAZING but the number of weekly shows is to brutal on the Voice....Vegas is tough...

If she could work out a deal like that (3 shows a week),it will be perfect for her....but most of these residency deals require at least 5 or 6 shows weekly.

The main reason they have these big acts is attract people to the gambling tables.
Mariah Carey has formally announced her first Las Vegas residency at Caesar's Palace.
The pop superstar shared her big news on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I'm going to do my first ever residency in Vegas at Caesars. This is a special event for me," Mariah explained. "And again, I have to hope that the fans will enjoy this cause I'm gonna be performing, which was kind of inspired by my albumNumber 1's, and this is now the updated version with 18 of them. Hopefully other people will enjoy this. I've never done this before," she said as she teared-up on Ellen's couch.
Confirmation of Mariah's residency comes on the back of reports Celine Dionis postponing her dates at Caesars Palace.
The Canadian-born star was expected to return to the Colosseum in March but, according to various published reports, she's pushing back her music engagements to look after her ill husband Rene Angelil.

And still can't sing a lick if her life depended on it. I don't get her popularity. Her spanish singing is okay. But, her english songs are horrendous!!!!

She better muster up enough good takes pre-recording in the studio, because if she goes night after night of failing, the media outlets and people on twitter are going to roast her alive. Not the kind of buzz someone of her caliber or Ceasar's Palace wants or needs. If Britney can put a backing track together with the help of the studio, I'm sure Mariah can too.

From what I can tell, Mariah whole "show" is kind of made for Vegas anyway. It sure is a lot safer than live television. She'll be in a better position to control what happens during her Vegas stint.
I would love to go. I'm hoping she does a second round possibly late in the year or some time next year. I'm in my mid-twenties and I've never had a chance to see her perform nor have I ever been to Vegas. This is good for her.
Interesting thing about this article is that it's one of the only ones that talk about the whole 49 cent discount single thing. I think Mariah is a little desperate to call her show "Number Ones" to remind people about her fake number one hits.
Similarly, in 2013, Britney's hit Planet Hollywood residency ($38M in revenue and growing) was declared a unmitaged failure by some websites-less than 72 hours after tickets went on sale.

I have never heard about her fake #1 hits before. Now I wonder how many hits she would have had had they not done that. They basically dropped the prices on her music to get people to buy it. Anyway we can't really judge how well the show is doing until she starts. What's going to be more embarrassing is if Britney Spears out does her.

I was going to say.. most people don't know when they will be travelling to Vegas next or aware of when her residency begins.
