This is the one time (apart from American football season) that I'm sorry for not have cable TV or a TV in general in my apartment. I wanted to check out Empire.
And yes, I also notice that it's definitely inspired by Dynasty.
Hustle & Flow Part II. "Do you want to be prince or do you want to be king?" I definitely gotta check this one out.
That's exactly what it reminds me of.
I watched it last night and I want to like it, I really do but it's missing something. When it ended, I didn't have that urge to have to set my DVR for next week to see what happens next. It's kind of predictable. The music isn't bad though. I'm not ready to give up on it yet, so I'll probably check it out next week to see if it gets better.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
How comes everything that Lee Daniels does is in your face, over the top? I realize that a pilot epi has to be compelling but that dude uses the same "throw all the shit at the wall to see what sticks" approach to all of his work, I swear. No sense of nuance or subtlety at all.
Even though I really dislike Daniels I watched because I think Taraji is great and despite his unsettling voice, Terrance Howard is a good actor.
The music was actually decent.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
I was so excited to watch this show but I'm sorry to say I was a bit disappointed. Too many stereotypes in black people. I'll give it another shot and will watch it again next week to see how things progress.

A. that was the pilot episode so the build up had to be all in one episode to be picked up.
B. its Lee Daniels project if you didnt see his previous works.
C. Tarji and Terrance make a great team.
D. The middle son was in Patrick Ian Polks The Skinny and the older son is in Selma.
Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

wow, I don't think I can make it without my cable TV or a TV. But good for you.
First of all...the names...Lucious and Cookie...come the FUCK on now.
He used to be a drug dealer, and now he has a record company, and she is coming out of jail. No better ideas than that? Why can't he be a college graduate, or inherit the company from his father or something? I guess that would be too hard to put on t.v. First Precious, and now this. Fuck Lee Daniels, and Tyler Perry. This is not creative. This is not new. This is some stereotypical buckdancing bullshit I won't be watching. I swear they are trying their best to keep us where we are, when they have platforms and leverage that can change the way people think about us, but instead we get this. No progress as usual. We need to be careful what we like and watch on t.v., because even though it may be negative, giving our attention to things shows people who make this kind of shit think we want to keep seeing it.

I'm good.

It is supposed to be a trashy soap though in the vein of "Dynasty".
But true to your post real life sorority sisters went H.A.M. on this 'ish!

That's what I was saying as I was watching the show...where's the nuance and subtlety? It doesnt exist on this show. But like others have pointed put it's supposed to be a nighttime soap opera--think Nashville goes hip-hop with the campyness of Dynasty and over dramatic-ness of Dallas mixed in. I get this show is supposed to be over the top, all manner of nuance and subtlety be damned. Despite its OTT-ness and some chessy/corny scenes, it was entertaining and kept my interest. But I agree with LittleBlueCorvette that the Power series is better. It did what Empire is trying to do better and their characters were more believeable. Even the show Nashville (which I love btw) does a better job in the musical nighttime soap opera genre with better storylines and more believeable characters. However, this was just the pilot so I will give this show a chance.
I do think Taraji and Terrance are strong leads (especially Taraji who lights up every scene she's in) and the actors playing the sons are ok but that youngest son--the actor is not all that convincing to me especially when he raps. The music was decent but nothing on this first episode compelled me to go to itunes and download.
I will take a few more shows for me to decide whether or not to stick with it for the rest of the season, but the next episode looks like it will be pretty good, so I will be watching.

Don't get me started on the "Black Greeks"....I'm definitely going to check this out, women tend to not hold back what they think, and it's usually an astute perspective that I can appreciate
....but what is that blonde Chewbacca Khan creature that has the nerve to sit in the front?

They pretty much browned my salad when Terrence tells his secretary in one scene that he's having dinner with "Barak" and a few scenes later he's blowing his best friend's head off.
Alrighty then....
Taraji and Terrence do have good chemistry though.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
I was disappointed with the show because I think the show was a bit over the top and the acting was a bit dicey. I think this is one of those situations where the promos for the show ended up being better than the actual show itself.

I agree with you Seventeen, especially about the promos. This pilot episode didnt quite live up to the promos lol!

@babynoz: Oh yeah I forgot about that scene but I agree, that was a hot mess!

Hey Naughty Kitty! It's weird seeing you in a non-Bruno thread Yeah the pilot episode was disappointing to me but maybe the next episode will be better. The writing on the show is pretty cheezy though and it seems that there's a lot of overacting or something. I can't quite put my finger on it but the show just doesn't live up to the hype in my opinion.

Yes I do venture out into other threads at times And I agree the writing is at times cheesy, the plot lines over the top and there is some overacting going on. But maybe in the next episode or 2 things will get better.

Nice to see you here on this thread Yeah hopefully the show will get better. Pilot episodes tend to be a bit shaky anyway so hopefully things will improve. They sure have hyped this show up a lot though. It better get better so I won't feel like I was duped by the hype machine
To me the general rule is that a show takes time to find its groove. That might seem like an anomoly today because some of these shows come out of the gate with a strong impact (I'm thinking something like the "LOST" pilot).
But other times shows take quite a while to reach that level. Seinfeld and Cheers were mere shadows of what they became when they first came out and were flops. As time went on though people caught on and a groove was established. But I am talking about a differrent time when people had nothing better to do then stumble across TV shows that have already been on a few years.
My point? Give it time.
From the previews of upcoming shows I like this exchange:
Bougie ho: Do you even know what a debutante is?
Cookie: A bougie ho with money?
Bougie ho: A ho that can cut your throat and not even disturb her pearls!
That is one of those ooooooh moments that trashy soaps like this were made for. I guess you just have to be into it. It's a step up from such addictive monstrousities as:
will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.
