That was also the same show that started a lot of controversy for Patti! After she was accused of snatching the mic from Diana Ross(who was considered royalty back then, like Beyonce is now) and outsinging her to her face. It was the talk of the watercoolers the next day. biggrin

When I saw that performance originally. That was my first introduction to Joe Cocker.

Yep, everybody and their Mama watched NBC "Motown Returns to the Apollo" that night..Patti gave the performance of her career..I was a kid when it aired and I also remember FOX re-airing it a couple of years in a row. It was a very popular 3hr Musical celebration. No awards, just singing...

nod

Patti had a mission that night! But it also made a lot of female singers not want to sing with her anymore. I liked that show better than the Motown 25. It paired a lot of unlikely singers together as duets, like Boy George & Stevie Wonder. Who debuted his future hit "PartTime Lover". I wish that Stevie would have done that song with BG in the studio. Boy George slayed all his duets that night.

In a dress biggrin

Happy New Year.....I thought Boy George was paired with Luther and George Michael was paired with Stevie? Can you imagine the Entertainment Budget the Producers had to have to pull off a night like that? Those were the 80's when TV was FILTHY Rich and Networks splurged....Now-a-days all Networks can afford is a Reality show featuring my ghetto neighbor and yours...

Happy New Year! George Michael did participate in a Stevie song also. But Boy George stood out to me more. Because I was a fan of his. I liked his boldness & soulful voice. It was during the last of his prime, Before drugs took over him completely. Like it did D'angelo( sad ). I remember that show vividly! Because I taped it on my VCR and watched it hundreds of times.

Yes! It will NEVER be another musical period like the 80's. Even the award shows then were a major event! Now they give an award to anybody. The talent on them now is laughable..
