Artists similar to D'Angelo, Bilal, Van Hunt Okay, so I've been digging D'Angelo since 2000 and Bilal since 2001, and recently got into Van Hunt. Who are some other artists I should check out? I like those three because they transcend genre in really cool ways. I like some Frank Ocean but I'm not crazy about him. Educate me please. Van Hunt is soooo much better than D'angelo it's not even funny.
He's so much more versatile and unlike D'angelo, he's actually capable of forming a memorable melody line and a decent chord progression.
D'angelo is wildly overrated and very pretentious and yet people fawn over him and ignore Van. Meh, that's media hyperbole for you.

Music Critics were surprised Beck received multiple GRAMMY nominations this year...

I disagree. Although I love Van Hunt, I often think he is even more of an impersonator than D'angelo is accused of being. While D'angelo is usually channeling and merging all of his influences into one sound... Van Hunt often isolates his different influences in different songs, and song parts. In one song he'll sound like Curtis Mayfield on the laid back parts, and a rock version of Rick James on the more heavy and noizy parts. Musically I think Van Hunt is far more interresting and versatile, but vocally I often prefer D'angelo. And I love his albums more than I love Van Hunts albums, even though I think "What Were You Hoping For" is one of the most important albums to study for any musican. It has so many textures etc that even D'angelo tried to duplicate. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Thanks for the suggestions! I love Van Hunt. I love D'Angelo. I feel no need to compare them. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Totally agree with you. D'angelo is more of a hipster's icon. Kind of like Larry Graham - hasn't done much but you seem cool if you mention him in a sentence about music with your hipster buddies. Van Hunt is more of a real artist, which is why you don't hear much about him. Doesn't take Van Hunt 14 years to release a mediocre album either.

When does Van Hunt's new album drop? I supported him on that Pledge Music thing, so I'm hoping I get something soon. His song Handful of Vapor on the Afropunk collection kicks ass. I was just wondering today when Van's new album will come out. Hopefully sometime next year. I'm thinking of ordering the autographed vinyl on his pledgemusic whenever there is a set release date.
I fell in love with "What Were You Hoping For?" so much I kind of hope his new album has a similar sound. None of Van's albums really sound the same (which I do like) so I won't expect it to sound similar but it would be nice!

What Were You Hoping For? is so damn good. I could listen to Moving Targets a thousand times in a row and want a thousand more. Any other artists you fine folks can recommend? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Does anyone know if Cocoon by Bjork is sampled in the track?

Agreed. It's one of my favorites by them, along with "Jekyll" and of course, "Nakamarra."
